Club Namco open for business
Gaming publisher launches online store full of T-shirts, toys, and imported Pac-Man merchandise.
Gamers still suffering from "Pac-Man Fever" 25 years after the fact now have a few more ways to indulge their sickness. Namco today announced the opening of Club Namco, its online store for merchandise that mines the company's storied history of arcade games and characters.
Currently the site is dominated by Pac-Man merchandise, but Galaga, Dig Dug, and Pole Position are also represented. The publisher is promising a larger selection of items in the future, along with game-themed ringtones and wallpaper for cell phones. In addition to T-shirts and toys, the site also includes product categories for "Office Fun" and "Home & Kitchen," though at the moment, the only product to fall under either of those headings is a Pac-Man-shaped plush cushion that comes in two sizes.
Many of the items on the site are Japanese imports, like the aforementioned cushion, or plush Pac-Man headgear, for discriminating fans who always wanted a hat that makes it look like Namco's mascot is eating their faces. Unfortunately, most of the imported products are specifically listed as being unavailable to ship to addresses in Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
As for why those four states are singled out, a Namco representative said it was because those four have their own state-level testing requirements for toys, wheras Namco only tested the toys to the federally acceptable standards.
