Japanese publishers weigh in on PS3 delay

Top Japanese game publishers react positively to the PS3's delay announcement, sighing with relief that the console's date has finally been settled.

This Wednesday, Sony Computer Entertainment finally confirmed what many had anticipated--the PlayStation 3 would not meet its spring release date. The next-generation console has now been rescheduled for a worldwide release in early November, before the all-important holiday shopping season. Today's Nikkei BP features reactions from the top Japanese video game publishers regarding Sony's announcement of the PS3 delay, and most were positive.

Konami: "It's very good that the release period has been clarified. It's important to release [a console] at the right timing when everything is prepared. We hope that the PS3 will expand progressively [through the market]. In terms of our development schedule, we think that the delay will give us enough time to make sure we deliver better quality in our games."

Square Enix: "It's being reported as a 'delay,' but the [PS3's] previously unknown release period has finally become clear, and we are very glad to hear it."

Capcom: "The hardware's release period has been set, so we will be throwing in our full effort to develop good games for it."

Koei: "It will be a major delay, but now that the release date has been decided, we can target it and make work on further quality improvements. We would like to polish up our products so that they will take full advantage of the PS3."

Bandai: "We are fundamentally receiving [the PS3's delay announcement] with a favorable view. Titles for the PS3 are currently in development."

That's fine by me. I have waited this long already, and the wait will be worth it.

As a european this situation couldnt be greater. i wasnt going to buy it when it launch anyway but at least when i do i will be able to buy a really decent game and i dont have to wait 3 months or something to a buy a good one. It is not that bad to japaneses, cause they are not thinking to buy the 360 and they will problaby buy the revolution regardless they buy ps3 or not and they prefer a good launch then a bad one. The devs have just anounce this so japs can find good things about the delay in their country.

This delay is smart. It's not like the PS2 is dead. And the PSP is getting great games now. Don't rush the PS3 like Microsoft rushed the Xbox 360. That was foolish of Microsoft. You can't even find 360's in the store and because of the early release they got stuck using DVD's instead of new technology like Blu-ray or HD-DVD.

I think in five years the PS3 will still be getting great games while Microsoft will already have a new console out. The Xbox was only out four years before the 360. Will the 360 be out three years before Microsoft's next console?

I'm not attacking Microsoft but I don't see what the rush is about. The Xbox and PS2 still have plenty of life left in them.

No your correct madden on ps3 will not look like madden on the xbox 360, as buy the time sony release the over priced and flawed ps3, madden 2008 will be out.
do you really think ea will spend more time and money on the ps3 version or just port it?

why do some of you think ps3 games will be so much better than 360 games?..............remember 360 is out ps3 is not!!!!!!!!!!!

im glad for the delay. Developers wil be able to make the games they wanted without sacraficing content. This ensures the best possible product meaning a better launch and better well polished games. Lets just say when i get my madden for the PS3 it wont be like madden for the xbox360.

PS3 onlu have on one think better than xbox 360, the processor, xbox 360 have a X1900XT graphic card better than the graphic of ps3, so the graphic card itīs de componet more important of the gamers, so xbox 360 will have better graphics (again). I hear that ps3 price will be 800€

It's only a delay for the Japenese. Most analysts assumed North America was going to have to wait until the fall anyway. And it's great news for the Europeans becuase they were fearing a 2007 launch.

Doyke has a valid point, but I doubt that the release of a high-level game will do much to hurt Sony. It would only appeal to fans of the Halo series.

Well I think it's great that Sony is taking their time. And it is also good for popular gaming companies to get prepared for next generation console!
Any way ... Ps3 is the biggest, powerfull and most popular gaming console for next generation...so no hurry for it?

Although I'll likely wait till MGS4 come out before getting this console I'm glad to hear that the developers are doing their best and trying to polish up even first generation titles. Hopefully the first generation titles will give some gauge of PS3's future capabilities. Not a Sony fanboy, I'll wait to see what they have at E3 to show us gamers. Sony is known for overhyping (despite having many great games and being the platform of choice for RPGs, the PS2 was certainly s let down as a hardware). So far I'm slightly more excited about what the Revolution has to offer with controls and what Nintendo has to show for E3. Hopefully there'll be real-time gameplay demo of PS3's titles up for show besides just more MGS4 otherwise Sony will just be lukewarm for non-fanboys.

what do they think the Japanese are GOING to say? its their home team in an incredibly xenophobic country that views the west as inferior in many ways including...no.....especially....gaming. Its an 800lb gorilla that could be a technical mess including bugs etc but it'll still outsell 360 even though the 360 might be superior (it may or may not be...we'll have to wait and see, no?)

Same thing will happen here unless we start sticking the Japanese Govt. with the same ridiculous and unfair tariffs they extort from us when we want to sell US goods in their country.

oh no, mustn't upset japan....god forbid.

Most of the developers had good things to say about the delay. I think that they are glad that they have more time to polish their product and showcase the true power of the PS3. I think that Sony will be 1 year late, but they will try to release great games and hopefully a lot of consoles to meet demand.

good job Sony, don't rush, tahke it slow, and destroy 360 with a smooth rollout(touchwood) and a great opening lineup

Remember how so many people said the Xbox 360 wasn't really next-gen? Well it looks like we'll be playing good next-gen games in early November. LOL.
