Microsoft doesn't react to PS3 news

"Leaders don't react," says Microsoft Game Studios general manager Shane Kim when asked about Sony's recent announcements.

With more than 50 pages of user comments on GameSpot's PlayStation 3 delay story, it's clear that everybody had an opinion to voice about the announcement. Sony's archrival was no different, as Microsoft Game Studios general manager Shane Kim gave his reaction to the news to Computer and Video Games.

"I have a philosophy: Leaders don't react," the site quotes Kim as saying at the New York unveiling of Rare's Viva Piņata. "For us, Sony's announcement doesn't change anything. We've had a very clear strategy for a long time now, and we're not going to change that. We're not going to react to anything that they do."

That philosophy didn't preclude Kim from giving his take on the PS3's planned worldwide launch in November and how he thinks the 360 can take advantage of it.

"We'll be in full supply of Xbox 360s shortly, we've got great content on the way, and we've got fantastic third-party support," Kim said in the article. "If Sony happens to stumble--and we know firsthand that there are a lot of challenges in a worldwide launch--then we'll be in an incredibly strong position to take advantage."

Another version of the party line showed up on GamerScoreBlog, a group blog staffed by Microsoft employees. The company's official stance follows:

"This announcement certainly doesn't change any of our plans. We've blasted out of the gate with the greatest launch in the history of video games and we're keeping our eyes squarely fixed on today and on the Xbox 360 road ahead, including continuous new content and programming through our premier Xbox Live online gaming service, the delivery of 80 high definition games and shipping between 4.5 and 5.5 million consoles by June."

GamerScoreBlog writer and online community manager Cesar Menendez followed that with a bit of his own commentary. "This may come as a shock to folks," he wrote, "but Sony tends to not share their launch plans with us in advance. ;) We're continuing to stay focused on Xbox 360."

Sorry to point out your factually incorrect remark but GT4 was technically Vice City and GTA5 is San Andreas, check you facts.

The greates launch? That was possibly the most bungled launch in the history of games. And now long after the launch there are still NO GAMES to sell or consoles to sell. Eyes on the road? they must be stevie wonder cuz there aint no 360 consoles ot games on the road.

to whom ever said ps3 wil be so defective i agree , look at psp ps2 slim , this is why nintendo is taking its time to do revolution, as always and they never had one defective home console in history thats why revolution is going to kill sony this time and i dont think nintendo will have shortage problems as much as sony and ms look at ds it had a shortage but 1 month later more units started coming unlike ms i had to wait 3-1/2 months to get my 360

I think that Microsoft does have some what of an advantage being the first in the market but part of the sucess of the launch was being the only one out on the market for a holiday season and thus making the 360 the only choice. Most of the games were kinda blah to me but when have blah videogames ever stopped a system from selling well. If they can quickly get much of the exclusives out soon they may be able to help sales of the 360 weather the PS3's inintal launch season better.

Sony launch is going to be about what games they can have ready to go when the system launches. So I'd say they should have atleas 2 from their major franchies ready to go at launch or with in 2-4 weeks from it. Also if they can avoid the backwards compatiblity problems that the 360 has had then having a PS3 won't limit your games but you can still force both of their systems agresivly. The other problem they need to avoid is having to little systems. Though its first holiday season something like the PS3 reguardless of price is going to be sold out everywhere. Reguardless of quality of games. The same happened for the 360. I doubt even droping Halo3 at PS3's releace will affect sales since by that time until a price drop pretty much everyones who's buying a 360 will have already gotten it.

I think determining yourself to be the Leader in a one man race reeks of a bit of huberious but its hype so to be expected.

Also you have to think that it would be some what fool hardy to launch a system before you've had an E3 where it was playable on the floor, simply from a previewing standpoint. And again we've circled to the point about the PS3 launch. If they can show atleast 3 main franchies games at E3 and assure them of being launch or close launch titles they stand a good chance of being able to put the pressure back on 360 and less on system sales and more on the quality of games.

i agree with SOny for Ps3 coming out in November. Sony is saying it will be the next generation of videogames. So they have to take their time or it just may turn into a horrible system. Many of you are saying that Ps3 is going to be way behind 360. I could agree with that because of Sony crazy price. But what about the Rev. Many of you are saying the rev is crap. You guys are complete idiots for saying such an idiotic thing. You guys have no idea what you are talking about if you say it sucks. First they are trying to change the world of gaming while Sony and Microsoft are sticking with those same controllers. If the Revs controller turns out to be big well you guys are going to look like idiots. So keep your mouth shut and let everything unfold before you say anything.Or you may turn red and wish you had not said that. Also i am not a Nintendo fan but i am getting a rev because this new console intrests me. one more thing any of you know what day E3 is?

Why do all the PS3 fanboys ( well actaully they have not been born yet seeing the PS3 is not even finished) always say PS3 rocks because it has the best graphics and MGS4 + GTA4 + GT5 +(CGI only)Killzone 2 = Xbox 360 born Nov 05 Died Nov 06 and the only person at the funeral will be the Master chief. Well a few things from a reality fanboy lets say that the PS3 launches in Nov 06 i wonder how many of your 4 titles will be there? Maybe you will get the long awaited Fantavision 2 , a new smugglers run and dynasty (please not another one ) warrior 6 or is it 7. Now they say the only thing that is coming to Xbox 360 is Halo 3 so they are giving cred to that title but i am excited about all the new IPs for 360 not that fussed about the old franchises check out my selection of games to be ineterested in Blazing Angels, Prey, Dead Raising , Gears of War , Saints Row, Blue Dragon, Frame City KIller, Alan Wake these are all new IPs and all due in 06 if you have no interest in any of these titles then you either hate games or you are in a coffin. I plan to enjoy these game in 720p and 1080i (which to me confirms that we are now in the next generation once you have seen games in HD anything that is not is like acid in your eyes) this year while the peeps who refuse to get a 360 for what ever reason twiddle their thumbs only old consoles . The next thing i want to attack is Japan and 360 IMOP stuff them they do want the console well they do not deserve the console they can pay their 40million yen for PS3 and enjoy another generation of Hello Kitty and dating games. Why do people equat how good a console is by what happens in Japan people they are mindless sheep programed at birth to buy sony + dating game lock yourself in your room never go out. I used to love my sony ps1 when i first got resident evil it blew my mind it took 2 years before i knew anyone to swap games with and then the ps2 just went off but over the years i felt Sony have stated to water down their focus on hardcore gamers and they pander towards the mum and dad market. Sony have become No 1 not from the core gamers but from the mass market who I beleive they are about to seriously alienate with the PS3 but starting to gain my attention again. I know the PS3 is going to sell gangbusters but it seem s console life spans may get shorter will the PS3 have enough time to get down to the end user before M$ has the next xbox. Well this is my crazy crackpot rant please feel free to flame me if you think i am so totaly wrong i love every ones opinions and enjoying reading everything people post on this topic

I can see from M$ point of veiw about the best launch ever having your product in extremely high demand and low amount of stock that moves like a bullet off retail shelves is positive for them and their stock holders. But for all the american and european gamers who did not get a unit i can understand your frustration. Also only 3 months since launch they have 6 million unit out there and those consoles would have a good game attachment rate which is what this industry is all about, I think this round of consoles seems to have more earlier adoptors and those guys are not afraid to buy games unlike the mum and dad buyer how would rather have root canal then to have to buy more games for their kids( used to work for EB some parants are tight bottomed kill joys). It would also be interesting if you could measure the amount consoles sold by re-sellers (ie Ebay) vs how many people did not get their pre-order. BTW aleast you guys who live in the world wide release zones has a chance of getting a unit of anything over here on Planet Australia we are still waiting for our 360 launch so who cares about news of when Sony might release the PS 3 we all badly want , because i can safely say when Sony says world wide release they too really mean Japan US Euro and all other planets once they feel you have been punished enough

A lot here claim that Microsofts Launch was awful, yet it was FAR from it. In attempting to reach several countries at once, MS did a good job. Not only that, but the shortages even played into MS's hands, leaving those who didnt get one, desiring one still more.
If you think Sony's launch will be any better, your wrong. Their launch will be plagued by the same exact issues. Possibly even more, for dont forget their including so much uneccesary crap into their box (blu-ray, Cell), that their shortages will likely be even worse.
That doesnt even bring into consideration that the 360 will literally be blooming by this time.

AncientDozer, I agree with you on many of the points you made. Sometime I like to put $ signs on the sony and microsoft names. But you are right, CoD was a fun game and all but I could get it on the PC(well not me since my computer is crap) and PDZ really didn't click with me. No contrary to what you say I'm not a nintendo fanboy and I don't hate sony, I happily own a PS2 and a Gamecube and play Xbox with my friends. I just don't like how Microsoft seems to be beating a dead horse in Japan while they let america and european gamers wait so long. I may not know much about econimics but wouldn't it have been better for them to produce a million or so units then launch the system? Again, I'm no bussiness man so I don't know if this would fly in the bussiness world.

That's great for you, Gaara. Your cleverness inspires. Replacing the S in Sony and Microsoft with a dollar sign is classic! Genius, even. You're sticking it to the man, all right. Ahem, no. It's stupid and you should kick yourself for doing it. I know why you think Nintendo beats the other two. Because it doesn't have an S in it. Now, THAT is clever. Anyway, to the topic at hand. I'm not surprised that people went straight for the launch comment and I'm even less surprised that they took time to make cheap (LAME) shots at Microsoft. Back to you, Gaara. Your last line amused me. "It's bad luck to wish bad on other people" and yet there you are saying Mario 64 did better than any of the release games. I don't know. I kindah liked CoD and Dark. But I guess it's a matter of opinion. However, when you say they have a bad business model you forget that they, like Sony, are a major organization. They didn't get to where they are by being dumb. Mistakes can be made, but that does not make them bad simply because a few stupid fanboys are jealous of their success and their ruthless drive. Let it go and get the system or not. Don't go to forums and topics to make oneline cheapshots or psuedo-political comparisons. I will, however, acknowledge and salute you, Gaara for putting far more effort into your post than some of these jokers.

XAF1, think about what you said, those hand me downs as you call them are usually better than the launch consoles that are sold. They are usually less buggy, have less problem and by then you know what good games are out. I don't thank microsoft for its world wide launch because belive it or not, not everyone wants a console on launch, I usually wait 2 to 3 years to get a console, why you ask. Because by then good games are cheaper, the console is cheaper and I can see if i still want to buy it. Don't be quick to judge and assume. Micro$ofts launch wasn't great, hell Mario 64 is better than all the 360 games at launch combined. I hope Sony has a solid launch, its bad luck to wish bad on other people.

Actually MS did have a great launch. With the exception of Japan there wasn't a single Xbox 360 to be found here in the US and in Europe for a while. Yeah they could have sold more if they would have had more but they didn't so get over it and quit whinning. I can guarantee you that if MS had not forced their hands Sony would not be doing a Worldwide Launch. Everyone who's eager for the PS3 in the US and Europe actually owe MS a thanks. Isn't it nice for once not to get Japan's second hand hand-me-downs nearly a year late for once. If it wasn't for the 360 we wouldn't be getting the royal treatement. And believe me Sony will have quite a few manufacturing/ shipping problems so prepare yourselves I will be counting the number of people complaining about not getting a PS3 because the retailers didn't have enough. Also I will be comparing the 2 launches to see who actually did a better job of handling the problems as they stumbled with defective systems. I think Nintendo and MS will be smiling pretty this Christmas holiday. It will be an interesting time seeing which horse wins this grand holiday race.

I really don't care for micro$oft, they have a bad, yes bad, bussiness model when it comes to games. Truthfully nintendo beats out both $ony and Micro$oft, because they don't use enourmous amounts of money to get what they want. A good comparison would be the U.S. and its military/N.A.S.A. which throws money at the problem(contrary to what Rumsfeld says) while countries, especially those in the E.U., like switzerland and the netherlands make due with what they have and improve. Micro$oft will come in second(in the traditional market) because they have the money to throw around and can afford to lose a billion dollars if it means 4 years down the road they might start making a profit then, stupid them, cut support for the sytem. Oh well we will see what will happen in a couple of years and will look back to now and laugh.

Sony is willing to bankrupt themselves by getting top dog software specifically for PS3. If MS wanted, they could basically buy MGS4 from Konami. The same goes for FFXII and GTA. They really don't need that type of security as Sony does. They have been playing the Nintendo game for years. The reason the MGS games are associated with Sony is there was no other system to really play them on. Saturn died and N64 didn't have the right market Konami was shooting for. The same is said for all those top line games. EA supports MS. So does Konami, Square, Capcom, and more. Pretty much all the third party developers are making their games for all three.

They tailor certain ones to certain markets. Konami is locked out of a MGS4 for 360 for at least a year. I don't know the full details but Sony likes to secure themselves with titles that they don't want on other systems. This is obvious and what usually wins the war. Defete your enemy by buying out the suppliers. The 360 will more than likely get MGS4 and FFXII and maybe even Tekken. It all depends on how good the deal is. Last I heard, MS had more money than Sony but long time friendships are an honorable tradition in Japan. That country doesn't sway easily to the all might yen like companies do in the good old USA! I would liike to see Sega make a comeback in the console world. I liked ALL their systems. I for one didn't get burned by Saturn as it had the right type of games I was into on that system. Shooters (not FPS) like Thunderforce V and Do Don Pachi and of course Radient Silvergun. Do note that these are all Jap games as in Japan the Saturn continued to live on.

Bad marketing ruined the Saturn but they turned it around for the DC. The 500 pound gorilla (PS2) was what gamers were holding off to buy even though they could have started with the DC and gotten the PS2 as well. The 360 is in a similar position. Just because it came out first doesn't mean it will rule. DC had WAY better games and ones that kept getting better up until the PS2 launch. But all I heard was "I won't get the DC now. I want the PS2 first." Those gamers may have eventually gotten the DC but it was to little to late. Did you know the console sold more at its death than during its life? Price was the key but all those sales didn't help as there was no more development for it. Sad when it takes a death of a system to make gamers realize how great it really is. All this because people were holding out rather than buy the greatness right in front of them.

EVERY launch, of EVERY console had shortages.Period. You have to create demand for a product before you release the supply completely. This is just the nature of the beast. MS completely moved all of the product that they had. While this does not mean it was a great launch for the consumer, it does bode very well for MS. I mean, would you not think that you had a great release, if you moved all of your product? Of course you would think that. You SOLD everything you had to sell, and that means that you were successful. PERIOD.

I would love to read a psychologist's analysis of these comments. This bizarre level of loyalty by people to a particular consumer product like this is frightening. I mean, you'd think Sony and Microsoft, with all their money and track records of really sticking it to the consumer where it hurts, are somehow worthy heroes in a epic battle from reading this. I agree with anyone who says competition is fantastic and the more the merrier on systems. Otherwise, we will get substandard crap. Also, if I were a conspiracy theorist, I would think that Sony somehow coded subliminal messages in its releases to turn peope in to start raving loons when there is a threat to their game system. It's not like this is politics or religion, it's a consumer product, a toy. They can be a lot of fun, but come on. It's still just a means of entertainment.

I concure with wanting both systems to succeed, but everyone is forgetting a major factor: aside from the BluRay drive, the technology in the 360 and PS3 is basically the same. The CPU's share the same IBM Power core, the GPU's are comparable, and so is the memory. So...PS3 fans are essentially waiting an extra YEAR to get their hands on technology 360 owners already have.

Now, Sony is taking this huge gamble to champion the BluRay format, but I think MS did a better job of playing their cards - 360 is in peoples homes NOW and if a new movie format is what people want (which I don't think it is), then you have the option later. Waiting for the BluRay may be disastrous for Sony...

Kudos to MS for not responding with any cheap-shots...

Looking through this article again, it actually seems to be a bit cocky. The only reason the X360 is currently leading the next-gen war is because it's the only next-gen system on the market. Nintendo and Sony will both have their upcoming systems out this fall, and the Japanese developers know what kinds of games sell worldwide. Let's just see who has the best-selling system come next March.

Can't we just all get along. Here's the way it is. Yes I am a microsoft fan but that's beside the point. There are people who like sony and there are people who like m$ Both systems are a far cry from the NES days. So why don't we leave it at that sony fanboys like their system m$ fan boys like their system and nintendo fans like theirs. The one thing we all have in common is that we like games and the fact that we cut each other down because we like one system or the other is stupid. Half of you all are acting like 5 year olds. Like I said earlier Sony will have it's launch problems just like M$ and so will Nintendo. That is just par for the course when you have three popular systems. I admit I probably wont buy a PS3 because I feel that if it retails for over $500 that is too much that is $45 less than I pay for rent. For those of you who want the PS3 more power to you and I hope you have many hours of enjoyment. I also wish the same for 360 owners and future Revolution owners.

The Dreamcast was the best...it really was ahead of its time, bad management, lousy 3rd party support killed the system and the slow recovery from Saturn killed the system....

And whatīs the fuzz about Sony vs. Microsoft? 360 is out now, there are a lot of cool games for it. I know Sony is fulll of lies; "emotion engine" prerendered video at last yearīs E3 making us belive it was actual gameplay, the dumbest declarations from Sony about the issue of the square button on the PSP.... Sony promises more than what is actually delivered so there isnīt any reason to be arguing now.
By the time PS3 comes out there will be a lot of titles already out for the 360, even at "platinum hits" status so you can buy them relatively cheap...all possible issues from xbox Live! should be ironed out. If you are a gamer you would buy the 360 and by the time youīre finished with all the good games you could move to the PS3 for more game-bang for your money.
If you are a fanboy you will be thrashing the "other" system for all eternity

Except for the system shortage this has been the one of the most successful system releases in history. They have more high quality games available then any console release before. Sony has a chance to surprise us all. I still do not have a 360, I want one, but none of my local retailers have any premium packages in stock and I will not purchase a core unit. Some day I may also have a PS3 I will NOT be pre-ordering and it depends on price and games available. If there is no reason for me to get a PS3 (same great games already on 360 with nothing better in PS3 version) then I will just stick with 360 and revolution (always ready for a new Zelda). What I am trying to say is it ultimately comes down to the games.

Now for the topic on hand:

A few other members have also expressed this. Microsoft and Sony may be in the video game console business however it is still political. The response from Microsoft's Shane Kim was merely for PR. Microsoft and Sony are not only selling a video game console, they are also selling themselves, their name, their brand.

Right now, the battle is in Microsoft's favor. Sony because of their history, is right on their heels. However, Sony needs to step up these last few weeks have no been a good one for Sony.

    If sony can:

    1. Present a Successful WW Launch Nov. 2006

    2. Release the system with HDD included

    3. Launch the system below $499

    4. Have sony's online network running for launch date

They will give M$ a run for their money, not because of superior hardware or games but mainly because of their current fan base. If they fail to meet those goals, their fan base will drop.
