Level 5 making new RPG

Studio president Akihiro Hino reveals that a project for "cult gamers" is on the way.

TOKYO--Japanese studio Level 5 just released Rogue Galaxy for the PlayStation 2 in December, but its developers are already working on their next project. Speaking to Japanese site Gpara, company president Akihiro Hino revealed that a new RPG is under way at his studio.

As one might expect, Hino confirmed that the next game will once again be a role-playing game, Level 5's specialty genre. He also said that it will be an RPG with a subgenre, although he wouldn't disclose whether it will be strategy, action, or something else. However, he hinted that it won't be something completely radical, saying that, "for people that love these [RPG] types, this will be a really cult game."

Level 5 has had many ups and downs in its short history. The company made its debut in 2000 as the developer of Dark Cloud, which was published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PS2. Four years later, in the summer of 2004, Level 5 made headlines in the gaming industry when it announced the cancellation of True Fantasy Live Online, which it was developing for Microsoft's Xbox console. Then, that November, it became one of the best-known RPG studios in Japan when Square Enix published its Dragon Quest VIII.

    hmmm Rogue Galaxy = awesome. Atleast in the looks department. now I think that since Whight Knight Story is also by them, that has to be this game GS mentioned.

    What's this about Dark Cloud 3 being cancelled???????? Arrrggh say it isnt true..... Please please make Dark Cloud 3..I really love this series and have just finished playing Dark Cloud 2.....Don't stop now Level 5...keep making the series pleaseeeeeee!!!!!!

    I doubt it'll be Dark Cloud 3, just based on the "subgenre" part of the story. Regardless, Level 5 hasn't made a bad game yet. The DC series is one of the best action RPG franchises out there, and I can't wait for the sequel. DQVIII was fantastic for old and new school RPG freaks. I have no doubt that Rogue Galaxy is going to be one of the best RPGs to come out in years! So beautiful. Whatever they do, it's going to be incredible.

    Now if they would just put True Fantasy back into production!

    You could call Level 5 a company that has faced many ups and downs, but it's more like lots of ups and one down. Gamespot failed to mention that before the news about True Fantasy Online Level 5 released Dark Cloud 2 which was incredible. In addition to Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest VIII, and Rogue Galaxy, they have had a pretty awesome track record.

    Good stuff... but I already knew this from Japanese source (since I'm here in Japan). I liked their last games so I'll be waiting patiently. For now though FFXII is only a few days away for me.... Mwahahaha. And also waiting for Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria. Good god I don't see the need for PS3 yet.... hehe... though it interest me what next generation RPGs will be like.... For now PS2 still has a fair bit of life left for Japanese RPGs. I'm happy

    Sweeeeeeeeet!! Level 5 is such a bad #$% developer. Their next RPG could be about saving bunny rabbits and planting flowers and i would be saving up for it now!!

    I thought there next project would be a next gen lauch title, but i suppose no one knows how to get mroe out of a ps2 than lvl 5.

    Level 5 making a new RPG is not a groundbreaking news. What I'm more curious about is if that game will ever get released stateside. We're still waiting for Sony to announce the US release of Rogue Galaxy, after all...

    Hey Kaos-Angel thanks for giving us a reason to CARE about Level 5. They made Dragon Quest VIII, one of the three on your list. Which by the way claimed over a hundred hours of my life. Twice as much as any Final Fantasy game. But I do agree with you about another Chrono game. Or if the heavens smile down on me Square will see fit to release a Vagrant Story sequel.

    YAY! more another game from lvl 5. They really do greatwork, and I can't wait. I wish they would bring back true fantasy live online tho.

    Bah, with the roll Square is going with Final Fantasy (40/40 anyone?), Kingdom Hearts 2 (39/40 ), and Dragon Quest (39/40 ), Square should just stick with First Party games and not worry about Level 5. Go back to Parasite Eve and the next Chrono Game!

    I hope its for a next gen console and not PS2. Its great that the PS2 is getting lots of games but they have to move to the next gen sometime.

    Well Dragon's Quest VIII is an awesome game, so let's hope they have learned from some of their mistakes and bring out another awesome game.
