Outfit demo sent to front lines

THQ gives Xbox 360 gamers a chance to satisfy their appetite for destruction with free sampling of multiplayer portion of WWII shooter.
By Tim Surette, GameSpot
Posted Mar 6, 2006 1:39 pm PT

Most people who get a taste of war never want to go back. THQ hopes that gamers who step behind enemy lines will want to go back so badly, they'll shell out $60. The latest downloadable demo for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console is for THQ's The Outfit, and is now available over Xbox Live.

The 440.89MB file previews what's in store for the game's multiplayer mode when The Outfit hits shelves next week. Included in the demo is the Estate Assault map, a countryside romp through a European village with streams and rivers. The available gametype is Strategic Victory, which tasks competing sides with controlling important landmarks.

Up to six players can participate over Xbox Live in teams of three. Xbox Live Silver members will be limited to playing one-on-one battles locally via a split screen.

On the battlefield, gamers can blow up just about anything onscreen, as they jockey for control over the map. As more landmarks are secured, teams will accrue Field Units, which can be instantly used to purchase items such as tanks, additional infantry, and air-strikes.

The Outfit is rated M for Mature and will have a price tag of $59.99. For more details on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I Have to say I wasnt gonna get this, but now im def. getting this, its brilliant. OK graghics arent pushing 360 too much but the gameplay is amazing!! very stragic, defending your base and captured buildings. calling in tanks and armored vans. Im loving it, this is one level, one game mode and Ive played it for hours, cant wait to get stuck in to the main game. Its bright and great fun. Its got that one more go factor and Im off to play some more. peace

people are such critics these days. Sorry, the PS2 could never come close to running this. The did a lot of stuff well. Tons of AI in online play, the ground is all mapped, draw distances are just fine. This has a lot more strategy game in it that just shooter. I thought it was a lot of fun to get out there a make strategic gun placements. Everyone is just getting used to it, I think there will be a lot of depth of gameplay when you get used to the simple stuff first.

After playing this demo, I am impressed. Before, I wasn't really interested in this game. After playing the demo, I am considering purchasing. The graphics are good, not great. The real strength of the game is how much action is going on at once. With 8 people in one game it gets intense with all the squads and turrets and such. Pretty cool IMO.

Comparing this game to GRAW is like comparing Return to Castle Wolfenstein to Rainbow Six. One is based in realism with 1 shot kills and the like, and the other is based around all out fun, realism be damned. Now if you fall into the camp of diehards who want realism then sure you will like the realistic game better. But if you dont prefer realism and just want to run around shooting stuff and having a blast without having to hide all the time then The Outfit demo seems to fit the bill as far as I can tell from the demo. I agree with the position that the graphics arent that great, but the whole level is destructible. That has to account for at least part of it.

Don't worry about lag, its basically a beta, had the same problem and when i turned off my pc sharing the connection it was fine, it was playing like a psone game before that.
Really jerky,

Just a real dissapointment, stop rushing games and demos, please

Ps 3 forever tempting.

eh... pretty unimpressive. Gameplay seems alright, a although a little frantic. I just refuse to accept old n busted graphics on a next-gen system. With FarCry, Graw, and Elder Scrolls around the corner, all with candy-colored goodness.. why blow 60 bux on this??

Its very admirable how die hard playstation fans can continue depriving themselves of this amazing experience (better demos will show up for better games later), but to be able to do what we can with the 360 by means of a network cable send wallpaper to our 360 which we can use for the background on the 360 dashboard or the ability to also play music from the pc on our 360 via this same network cable connection with the pc in addition to all the other media capabilities.

Downloadable demos, movie trailers, game trailers, ghost recon development diaries, a full fledged action scene from the upcoming avengers cartoon with incredible hulk and all sorts of other nice things. Upcoming directv service with downloadable hd tv episodes, watch live television, dvr functions pause rewind record live television, downloadable hd movies, friends list to compare how you are doing in a certain game compared to your friend or see who has the best stats in a game worldwide or between you and your friends. Play with people from all over europe and japan with no lag via xbox live. Connect ipod to listen to listen to any music we please on the 360 and how the music from our pc or ipod that we decide to play on the 360 AUTOMATICALLY becomes the music for the game we are playing it just turns off the original music that was being played for whatever game we were playing. The achievements so that we take advantage of every aspect of the game the developers wanted us to experience. Online co-op imagine playing ghost recon with some guy in the uk.

The 360 is a really good investment I was going to wait for the ps3 too and decided I'll take a chance with the 360 and I must say this is the best experience with a console ever.

I don't expect ipod support on the ps3 since ipod took over a business sony really prided themselves in and howard stringer even says it angers him everytime he sees an ipod and they'll be trying to unseat the ipod with their digital walkman. I don't think we can expect integration with any windows xp or vista pc since microsoft probably wont allow that. Microsoft has alot of help via these things. If they are slow on content the user can provide it themselves, but in sony's case they will have to be much more active with their online service than microsoft is currently to even compete (and microsoft is EXTREMELY aggressive with xbox live)

Whilst the demo is good i'm now not so sure about purchasing it when it comes out in a couple of weeks. Multiplayer, whilst fun, is just chaotic... but i guess that's the way it should be. It seems to be dividing opinion amongst the community. People either seem to love it or hate it...

Since I could only play against myself I only note a few things. The graphics are clean although the water looked off to me. Nice destructible environments with good explosions.
The sound is really good with solid sounding weapons. The aircraft that fly overhead gave me a startle at first. There is a great use of sound on that big boy. Having small children I was not prepared to hear the "F" bomb used so just a word of warning if you have small children.
The controls seem to be pretty good although they could use a little tightening. Mercenaries had it perfect for my taste but I found it a little on the loose side with the Outfit. Not game breaking but it could cause it to lose some review points in the end.
The bottom line is that this is a fun game but for those looking for a deep game with strategy you will be disappointed (based on the demo).
Will I buy this game? you betcha! It just falls short of the tight controls of Mercenaries and the Team strategy of SOCOM.

I think it's pretty fun. At first I was a little disappointed that it was an online only demo, but after a couple of games I got used to how a lot of things worked.. It's a lot different than I expected it to be, and a huge plus is that anything and everything is destructible.. and I love that =D

ya, i dont understand why (minus its the end of a fiscal quarter or something) you would not sell anything on the x360 for 2 months and then try to put this out at the same time as GRAW and all the other hyped AAA games coming in march. Its probably a good game that will worse than it should. whatever, i know i'll be playing the demo for sure.

THQ needs to hire a new marketing director because whoever decided to release this in the same window as GRAW deserves to lose their job.
