Next-gen Rainbow Six hitting Vegas

Ubisoft officially announces that its Tom Clancy-inspired tactical shooter series will storm unnamed "next-generation and current-generation" consoles later this year.

Las Vegas may be called "America's Playground," but the developers at Ubisoft Montreal are putting a dead-serious spin on the metropolis also known as "Sin City." Today, Ubisoft announced its flagship studio is working on a new Rainbow Six game set in the Nevada gambling Mecca.

Titled Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas, the game will be released later this year on unspecified "next-generation and current-generation video game consoles." No specific platforms were identified, but the announcement date--3/6/06--has led many to suspect it is coming to the Xbox 360. A PC version was not mentioned.

Ubisoft's announcement had no details about Rainbow Six Vegas' gameplay, other than saying it will "push the envelope of technology through graphics, artificial intelligence, physics, and animation." It did, however, offer a few details about the game's story. After explaining that over 36.7 million people visit Las Vegas each year, the announcement rhetorically asks, "What happens when one of the world's most famous cities is held hostage by terrorists?" It then goes on to reveal that the game will follow its titular "elite counter-terrorism unit" as its members try and foil "a terrorist threat of global proportions."

GameSpot will have more details on Rainbow Six Vegas as they emerge. It is the third Tom Clancy-inspired game announced for next-generation consoles: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter will ship for the Xbox 360 on March 9, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent will hit the platform in September.

When the next-gen Rainbow Six installment is released it will most likely be under a differnet name not the somewhat childish "Vegas" title. When the game does come out they better make it with amazing multiplayer.

It is the worst name the series has ever been graced with. I hope it is set to change. Other than that - I have faith the game will be good.

"push the envelope of technology through graphics, artificial intelligence, physics, and animation."

Yeah but what about GAMEPLAY!!!!!!!!!! The serie's been sucking so bad lately... Raven Shield was the last Decent one... all the others sucked terribly...

I mean... who gives a crap about graphics? Sure it's all fine and cute but good loocks doesnt make the game fun... I can't stand video companies that bets everything on graph, but not on core gameplay.

This seems to be just another LOCKDOWN but with a face lift.

What really pisses me off about this site is that I saw footage of this game three days ago. It has already been confirmed for Xbox, Xbox360, PC and PS2. PS3 is not getting it, but GS is avoiding that fact.

I have an x1900xtx video card which is currently the best there is for the pc and I can tell you right now that it doesn't outdo the 360's gpu, both are extremely comparable, but the 360's 10MB of edram bandwidth and its ability to antialias at no performance loss is quite a step above my x1900xtx among other things that huge amount of framebuffer bandwidth on the 360 can be used for such as HDR as well as many other things.

48 shader units can all be dedicated to vertex processing on the 360 gpu whereas such a thing isn't possible on my x1900xtx. My x1900xtx has a theoretical pixel fillrate of 10.4 Gigasamples whereas the 360 can perform 16 gigasamples with 4X FSAA. 3 cpu cores each capable of handling 2 threads simultaneously the way my athlon x2 dual core which has 2 cores and is capable of 2 threads as opposed to the 360's 6 threads.

I'm sure there are things my processor can do better than the 360's cpu (according to carmack there are certain things in which current processor are still faster in), but the 360's cores if properly taken advantage will most likely outdo my pc in games (hey thats what the 360 is dedicated to gaming)

"A PC version was not mentioned."

Instead of buying the latest graphics card, looks like you guys are gonna have to get a next-gen console.

"The GeForce 7800 GTX 512MB has a $649 MSRP from Nvidia, but actual retail prices will vary since the GPUs have to pass through a board manufacturer and a retailer before it reaches the customer.

A quick check of various online retailers reveals that cards are in stock with prices ranging from $699 to $749. "

For the price of this stupid graphics card (your games will look slightly better! Give us 700 dollars!), you could get an Xbox 360 premium, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, and an Xbox Live 12 month starer kit.

    Tell me that's not tempting.

I don't know... "Rainbow Six: Vegas" does not sound very promising for bringing back old school rainbow six. I will keep my fingers crossed for critical hour - http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/rainbowsixcriticalhour/news.html?sid=6145419

I got hooked on Rainbow Six 3 for the XB, I played it for hours @ night w/ my guys and had a blast. Black Arrow was alright and Lockdown, meh. Nothing beats RS3. Hopefully RS:V will be as awesome (hopefully even more awesome) than RS3. I love the terrorists in RS3, they're so funny! It looks like tropical shirt day in every level.

If Ubi doesn't make a map for RSV set at nearby Hoover Dam, they are missing an opportunity for a cool environment to hunt tangos in.

    Posted Mar 6, 2006 2:29 pm PT

To bad they ruined Rainbow Six. Ubi turned it into a mediocre arcade action shooter. I am glad they did not mention a PC version. It is for the best.

Every next-gen game that was released this year are all basically "look at what this machine can do" type of games, with better graphics but not so much on the AI part. You'll have to wait a bit longer for game developers to come out with better games that includes enhanced AI -- it's only a matter of time.

Yeah I got a feeling It will suck. Advanced warfighter is supposed to have good AI, but a review said your teammates are idiots. And ever since Lockdown on the PC, im not too sure I can trust UBI to make real Clancy games. They've sold out the old school Clancy gamers. "A PC version was not mentioned."
