New id game coming to PC, 360, and PS3

Id's Todd Hollenshead says unnamed internal project will be released on three platforms; 360 to be new Wolfenstein's "primary platform."

Long considered one of the last bastions of hardcore PC gaming, id Software appears to have jumped on the next-gen console wagon with both feet. In an interview with Worthplaying, id CEO Todd Hollenshead said that the developer's next in-house project is being prepped for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, as well as the PC.

"We're looking at PS3, 360, and PC for our internal project," he told the site, "but it's too early to guess on whether we'll have all of those ready to go at the same time. It would be nice if it works out where the launch is simultaneous, but I don't know if that's feasible."

No release window for the unnamed game, which remains top secret, has been announced. However, Hollenshead said that it "is the main focus of the development team at id...I'm not sure when we'll begin discussing details of the new IP, but it will be the next game developed entirely by id, and it WILL be cool." As for other games based on id properties, Hollenshead told Worthplaying that the upcoming Return to Castle Wolfenstein game is being designed with the Xbox 360 foremost in mind. "The next Wolf[enstein] game is using the 360 as its primary development platform but will be released on the PC as well." Revealed at last year's X05 event, the game is currently in development at Raven Software, which developed Quake 4 for the Xbox 360 and the PC under id's supervision.

Hollenshead also said that id was pleased with the critically-drubbed film version of its best-selling Doom series. He also chimed in on what he thought the next id-inspired big-screen offering should be. "The next movie deal that I want to focus on is Wolfenstein," he said. "I think it could make a great film. It's been optioned previously, but now we have the rights back again. I'm hoping that once the game development gets some exposure that interest in Hollywood will perk up."

    i think that they will pass if they develop new keen also
    and the new wolfenstein will not be like call of duty or medal of honor

    i think what they need to do is renew the multiplayer cause i love id multiplayer but there games are starting to just not be as good

    I have been dissapionted with Id alot recently. I mean the greatest (imo) fps of all time comes back with a sequal and it was nuts compared to the original. Then Quake, one of the multiplayer kings comes back and it was worse than doom 3. So im hoping this game puts id back in the lead in fps games.

    I don't really know what all these mouse & keyboard peeps r talkin bout, I mean if your good your good like me. Sure it's easier to pull off head shots with a PC but with enough practice it can be done on console like when I play Farcry Instincts im allway's in the top 3 just as I am in BF2 on the PC. Just tweak your "Look" sensitivity and your bound to score more kills!

    why are some people so stuck up about shooters on consoles?even though i have a pc i much prefer playing fps on a console with a pad ! why well my surround sound system costs far more than a top end pc' my screen is huge (it does even have a pc input) and i can just play on a sofa and its down to personal preference anyone that thinks pads are no good for fps get online with HALO 2 and i wonder why so many fps go to consoles and do well ?

    SO id does know where there bread is better buttered. The question will we see optimization for PC or some wack port. Ah well as long as the movie they plan to option is cool I'll be fine. Cross your fingers, here's hoping it ain't Uve Boll. Hey maybe Marc Ecko, he has fingers on the pulse of what makes games great...

    NinjaFoot, the "unwashed masses" comment was only a joke. In my experience with console shooters, console to pc ports and reviews I have read console shooters are generally more simplified and fast paced so as to appeal to a wider range of gamers. My opinion only.

    The Doom movie waz s*** on wheels the only good bit waz the fps bit
    think about it
    4 monsters:
    imp (threw its tongue instead of fireballs)
    zombies
    hell knight
    pinky (only one)

    the story should have been about the game storyline
    ( found two portals on mars-tried to link them- links to hell instead- monsters come out)
    not about the 24th cromesome
    the movie waz cr**

    Hopefully if they make a wolfenstien it will be good!!!

    liked doom3- a bit linear (can expect), scripted

    quake4- havent played- herd its full of s*** and bugs and cr**

    wolfenstien- ok never really interested

    I WANT A 360 !!!!!!!!!!

    FPS for consoles might make more $$$ but I fail to see the benefit of playing it on console when the best control method for the genre is Keyboard and mouse. A keyboard and mouse player versus a joypad with analog = death to all joypad players (actually more like annihilation). I don't see this ID project being a good one for some reason. I smell selling out considering they are going to use a console as a primary platform (X360). So they are essentially saying PC will get the port this time for their games.... What gives!?!? Sounds crap to me. The last decent console to PC port was Halo but even that game was never anything to write home about. Considering the non-competitive console FPS market I smell something subpar on the horizon... Not excited.

    Blitzkrieg13, wth are you talking about? Id has never been known for much innovation other than graphically, with the exception of the original Doom. Newsflash: You aren't any better than someone who prefers to play games on a console. And consoles being known for simplified on rails gameplay?. Please. You are just a bitter pc fanboy who can't stand the fact that one of the last bastions of pc gaming is developing for consoles as well as pc's now. (And cellphones too!)

    I agree. id has problems. DOOM 3 was ok, though it had nice tech. Quake 4 was an absolute joke. It was basically a glorified DOOM 3 mod. I also think the aging DOOM 3 engine needs an overhaul, but I'll have to see how Prey turns out. If id can freakin' bust out an inventive game like what Prey seems to be then they will again have my respect. I don't think this is going to happen. Lets face it console games are know for their simplified shooter on rails gameplay.
    PC has been and will continue to be the proving ground for inventive concepts like Half-Life 2 physics based gameplay. If id could get off of whatever they are on, they would blow the socks off the PC market with a brilliant new shooter and then market a dumbed-down version to the "unwashed masses" of console gamers.

    Id is dead. They've lost the ability to make fun games. Doom 3 and Quake 4 were boring. The reason why they are making games for consoles and PCs is to make money. Their games are not selling well on the PC for the reason that I've stated. Furthermore, the PC community is moving away from Doom like games and to MMORPGs, because they offer players and experince and more bang for your buck than a $49.99 FPS that only lasts 10 hrs and is linear with only death matches and capture the flag multiplayer games as they only replay value. How many times can a gamer play death matches and capture the flag multiplayer games? Developers of FPS games like Id need to reivnvent the first person shooter. Why not make a FPSRPG?

    Is it wrong for a gaming company wanting to make more money? Well i dont see it as betrayal, i see it as a way of making extra $$. Put yourself in there shoes... i think that you will see it the same way.

    Oh no! Not a company making a game for a console! What is the world coming to!? ID has betrayed their "harcore loyal fans", becuase their game is also going to be for a console! This doesn't affect me in any way whatsoever, but I'm still going to complain! I love complaining. And console bashing. Hey, I spent $2000 on this damn thing, so I have a RIGHT to say everything except my computer sucks. And that had better be true, or I'm going to mail a very strongly worded letter to Alienware.

    The developers can add keyboard and mouse support if they feel like it. It has nothing to do with microsoft.

    Also I've become extremely good with the 360 controller so I no longer miss the keyboard and mouse as much as i did when i first started playing the 360.

    Pc gamers (i don't even think you can call them that) These followers follow trends they jump on the bandwagon doubting companies like id SIMPLY because they decide to make a game for the 360, but nobody says anything at all regarding the ps3 version as if the ps3 and pc is so above the 360.

    I have an amd athlon x2 4200+ cpu with an x1900xtx and I'm STILL impressed by the 360's graphics and performance so people claiming they don't like the 360 because their computers are superior truly have no idea what they are talking about. The x1900xtx has some advantages, but isn't better at all better overall than the 360's gpu. The 360s triple core design is better for gaming than my athlon x2 4200+ cpu is.

    The 360's procedural synthesis capabilities are just downright impressive.

    I 'd rather use a controller than a mouse, maybe I'm crazy. Wolfenstein will be awesome. And I would wager that the new game to be released on all 3 platforms will be Doom 4.

    I just thought of something: I bet that PC gamers would be less against the 360 versions of FPS games if they supported Mouse/Keyboard combos. Maybe thats something Microsoft should make happen....even better, sell wireless Xbox 360 keyboard/mouse combos that connect to one usb port(Or no USB ports!)Anyways, I hope Castle Wolfenstein is good for the 360.

    Doom 4 Possibly? A true continuation because part 3 merely showcased what took place in the first game.

    ID isn't really jumping on any bandwagons they are STILL supporting the pc people should be glad that id has chosen to develop these titles on the 360 because john carmack himself has said the 360's development environment is so good that from now EVERY single game they make will be developed on a 360. (This will in turn HELP people on the pc that have dual core processors like myself to get the most out of their dual core cpus thanks to the optimizations being done for the 360's 3 core 6 thread cpu of the 360.

    If John Carmack of all developers says the 360 development kit is one of the most amazing he's ever seen I tend to trust the guy. Them developing for the 360 wont hurt the pc plus why not take advantage of 360's videocard which is beyond shader model 3.0 specifcations and meets many requirements for directx 10? I just can't wait to see wolfenstein on the 360 I hope id shows it off at E3 its going to be one seriously INCREDIBLE game.

    i m worried about id's new focus on making games primarily for consoles rather than the pc. i sincerely hope that they will not stop being one of the main pillars supporting hardcore quality fps titles for the pc instead of jumping on the mainstream bandwagon of developers making dumbed down titles for the consoles.

    Honestly I dont see why everyone is complaining about id games coming to next-gen consoles, or any other companie's products for that matter. Its not as if they are going to stop making PC games you know. I used to have a top of the line PC, but by now its probably Mid-range. So with a new IP and Return to Castle Wolfenstein coming to the 360 the console versions start to look like the way to go for me, because I dont have the money to spend on upgrading my PC to the way I want it to be.

    I dont think any fps will be that good for me now. they will still use the dynamic lighting algorithm and make every character have rubber like skin in the game, that totally sucks.

    i loved doom3, and the resorection of hell expansion, but i thought that quake 4 not only looked worse it played horribly the multi player is a straight up port of the previous quake multiplayers combined into a best of quake deathmatch thingy, that is in my oppinion a waste of time, they could have let modders do that, plus the quake multiplayer doesn't hold up nearly as well as ut 2004's deathmatch. and quakes single player was probably one of the most boring experiences i've ever had. i guess that the retroness of the game earns it about a 70% rating, but even fans of the fps genre don't like it that much, you'd have to be a big quake nut to really dig it. the pc isn't really as much of a platform of inovation right now because pc games can so easily be ported to 360. so don't yell at id for being disloyal, valve, and epic, and pretty much everyone but cyrteck and monolith is doing the cross platform thing.

    As long as there's a PC version of whatever they want to do, it's fine. We all know FPS belong to the mouse/keyboard combo, not the gamepad. If id wants to keep their products to a respectable level, they won't forget where they come from.
