Sony unveils 4GB Memory Stick Duo

PSP owners can now have as much internal memory as the top iPod Nano...for $250.

Hot on the heels of unofficial rumors that Sony is readying a PSP with 8GB of built-in memory comes official confirmation of an add-on that will give it half that. Via its official Web site, Sony announced today that it has released a 4GB Memory Stick Duo, the current storage format for its gaming and media handheld. "With our postage-stamp-sized 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo media card, people can store all of their vacation photos and wedding videos, along with their favorite movies, music and even game scores from a PlayStation Portable device." said Mike Kahn, Sony Electronics' senior manager for Memory Stick Media. However, the increased storage capacity won't come cheap. The MSRP for the 4GB Memory Stick duo is $249--as much as a 4GB iPod Nano or the Sony PSP Value Pack itself.

that's just ridiculous. I used to consider myself a Sony fanboy, but I'm getting so upset about their decisions lately. Everything is getting to expensive, why would we pay 250 (the exact cost of the darn psp itself) when IMO they should have had that built into the psp itself. They give us these 32 mg pieces of crap, that does not hold even 4 songs worth and want us to buy this thing? I hope nobody buys it, and even though I don't really like the games with the DS it's at least cheaper which is why I think they are winning in the first place.

Eh, 250 is a lot, but it'll go down once SanDisk starts making them too and the manufacturing process is mastered. I remember when normal 256MB memory sticks were 400 dollars, let alone the duos. That's more than a dollar per MB, and back when everyoen said digital photography would never catch on due to costs. Now look at the way things are. Just give it time, these aren't like memory cards where sony has no price competitor.

Good Job Sony with the Memory Stick 4 gb. Too bad, like I have been saying : why even waste your time with Blu-ray when flash will be up there soon. The same goes for HD-DVD.

Actually, as of last July, the 2GB was going for an MSRP of $449, so this is already a pretty amazing price to launch at.

It just means the fab plants are in production of 4 GB modules -- so guess what guys? Look for cheaper alternatives from SanDisk and others appearing in 2-3 weeks.
