VUG takes on old Quests

Classic adventure games from Sierra are set for rerelease for Windows XP; compilation packs will cost around $20.

Once upon a time, Sierra Entertainment, now a subsidiary of VU Games, was the leader in PC adventure games. Its most famous franchise was the King's Quest series, which originated in 1984, but the game's formula spread to space in Space Quest, the streets in Police Quest, and the hormonally charged libido of Leisure Suit Larry.

However, in order to give those games a whirl, today's gamers need a computer running on ancient operating systems.

That's about to change, thanks to some new rereleases from VU Games. A VUG representative confirmed to GameSpot that the publisher is preparing compilation packs of the above four series that will run on Windows XP.

Each set will contain multiple games in the series, but it is unknown exactly which ones will be included. The price of retro gaming won't be a king's ransom--the sets are priced at $20. No release dates have been announced, but product pages on online retailers' Web sites say the games will be available in late March. More information in expected in the upcoming weeks.

Sierra has up on their website that these collections are coming out THIS month! ( September) Amazon finally has some real pics up in their product descriptions. And no one is posting about this online anywhere yet. Where are the fans?

It was a great game... I mean it STILL a great game!!
KQ1 was my first adventure game back in the 1985. I love it still now, thank god that I have the KQ Collection set I brought about six years ago. Now it is a treasure that I will keep forever!

For those who think adventure games are dying due to lack of demand, I don't agree with that. gamers play whatever that developer developed as long as they are good games. I believe it is due to developer nowadays lack of creativity on interesting stories, and most of all, adventure games are definately more costly and need longer time to develop compare to kill-anything-that-moves 3D game. Commercialised developers nowadays prefer to develop something much easier and fast with quick profit returns.

I can't wait for KQ Collection to release.

Darn, according to amazon.com they pushed the release date back to December '06. Oh well, at least I can still play them with DosBox...

This is great, The older sierra games like kings's quest and Quest for Glory... Those were games. Now it's just about how realistic the graphics look

Space Quest was the first one I ever played, and still one of the coolest gaming experiences I ever had. My favorite series had to be Quest for Glory, though. The blend of adventure and RPG elements has rarely been matched since, and I'd love to play them again. I remember that the fourth game in the series had a ton of bugs, and it would be nice if they could re-release it in a repaired form. I also never played part five, which I regret now. Maybe they'll do it later if there's enough demand for the other series.

Quick comment: You can run most of the aforementioned games in XP with DosBox .63. Just google it and take some time to learning how it works. You will want to have a monitor or lcd that can display 640x480, so it won't feel too much like playing in a window. Most old adventure games will run just fine, including sound and inputs. Be warned though; you need a FAST computer for fullspeed emulation. Lastly, 7th guest and 11th hour were Trilobyte, a storied but now defunct software house. One of the founding members, Graehme (SP?) Devine was most recently working for id software, but I don't know where he is now.

This is wonderful. I have the King's Quest and Space Quest 10th Anniversary boxsets from way back (plus a few of the original games boxed on floppies). I was never able to find the Police Quest box set though, so am very interested in this (and I LOVED all those games). It's tricky to get my current versions working on XP.

Here's hoping that each set contains ALL the respective games. Doesn't look like they're getting a UK release so far though.

Finally. I have been waiting for them to do this for years. I hope they plan on releasing the Police Quest Series as well.

I hope other companies jump on the bandwagon. There are some classic games that are impossible to get running on XP (even with the DosBox program). Sierra games, however, are the easiest to get running on modern systems so I hope they through in some goodies to make it worthwhile.

God I used to get so frustrated with these games, I was waaay too young to play them when they came out to figure out the puzzles, I used to watch my older brother do them! I will definitely be getting this, give the old thing another go after about 15 years!

I keep finding barely a trickle of information about the packages. Though Target's website is claiming the 24th of March of this year, there is no picture of what the box will look like. Folks its only about 3 weeks away and nothing is out yet on the product? VU Games site doesn't even claim it exists anywhere.

My question is: Are they going to be smart and re-release the entire series from the mentioned games (i.e. King's Quest, Space Quest & Police Quest) or are they going to be jerks and release maybe King's Quest V & VI, Space Quest 1 & 2, and Police Quest? Ugh. Why can't corporations pull their head out of their butts? It should be obvious to VU by now that people still want to play these games. They tried to shut down the fan-made KQ 9 but so many people complained to them that they allowed it. BLESS THEIR HEARTS.

They need to rehire Al Lowe, Jane Jansen and Roberta Williams, give them their own offices and staff, and let them have FULL control over their individual games.

I bought the King's Quest Collection back in the 1990's for around $35. I sold it on eBay a few years ago for $125. What a profit!

Besides the popular King's Quest, Space Quest, and Police Quest, I loved Codename: Iceman, Gold Rush, and the Quest for Glory series.

I still have all the original boxes for most of the Sierra Adventure games. I've often thought about selling them all, but I'm sure I'd miss them. I'm not much of a sentimentalist, but these games bring back good memories!

I hope Sierra is going to re-release Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, the Quest for Glory series and Lara Bow: The Dagger of Amon Ra as well...I simply love those games!!!

I, personally, think Hero's Quest (Quest for Glory) was tops as far as adventure games, just because of the role playing elements within. Gave the PC a lot more depth to involve ones' self in.

OMG yay! It's about friggen time! I haven't been able to get these games to work. We still have the 486 machine, but right now its got no place to be. And I also tell my friends about these PC classics, but they're clueless about it. Adventure games, Sierra adventures that is, is what MY game nostalgia is. Alot of people grew up with those common games like Mario, or Atari games or whatever, but for me Sierra had it going on. And its so sad for me that they're not like they used to be.... Games like Kings Quest 6, but especially Lara Bow 2 and Robin Hood: Conquests of the Longbow, were really HARD and you really had to think carefully. You just don't think or solve puzzles in the same way in games anymore... And not alot of games have the humour like Space Quest did. I miss them so much! Can't wait for this. I've never been able to get Space Quest 6 working, so I hope I'll finally get to run it properly when this is released.

Tell all the people you can! I want these to sell great. I want adventure games to come back..... *sigh*

With so many games coming out in the masses and quite a lot with out as high quality as the games in the early days. Tt's good to go back and play the classics. So many fond memories of playing kings quest, Monkey island, Sam and Max, Space Quest and others.
They should really do some re-releaseing of monkey island because i have been wanting to get my hands on monkey island 2 and it's so hard to get even on ebay.

King's Quest, Space Quest, Quest for Glory, Laura Bown, Gabriel Knight ...yes, those were the good old days!!!

I hope LucasArts is going to do the same; I would love to have my all time favorite game(s): The MONKEY ISLAND Series in one package and be running perfectly on my PC.

Without us(the people that played these games) the video game industry would be NOTHING without us. Sierra had some great games(7th guest, 11th hour, Gabriel Knight, Space Quest, Quest for Glory *best imo*, Police quest *still remmeber the ending*, Kings quest, Sam and Max, Full Throttle, Day of the Tenticle, etc) If the publisher had fixes for newer machines(mac's would be nice as well) IT WOULD SHOW THEM PROFIT AND PEOPLE(LIKE ME) WOULD ACTUALLY BUY THEM. No i dont have stolen copies. So release them so we can all rejoice again!

I'd just love it if someone would do Windows XP versions of the Ultima games I through VIII, as well as the Worlds of Ultima games that were based on the Ultima VI engine, and the two Ultima Underworld games. Of course, I can still play some of those games in a DOS shell with no sound (and they don't hold my attention remotely as well as they were able to in the eighties and early nineties), but I would still buy them if they were re-done for Windows XP.
