ChartSpot: January 2006

Increased Xbox 360 supply pushes Call of Duty 2 on top as Liberty City Stories edges out Mario Kart for portable crown; WOW continues PC-chart dominance.

As more and more units of the still-rare Xbox 360 make their way into gamers' hands, the effects are being seen on the console charts. The most popular game for the console, Call of Duty 2, rocketed from 18th place on the charts in December 2005 to the top slot in January 2006, according to industry trade group NPD Funworld. The next-gen console version of the acclaimed PC game sold more than 136,000 copies during the month, taking in over $8.1 million in revenue.

But as impressive as Call of Duty 2's showing was, it wasn't that far ahead of the competition. Second-place finisher Madden NFL 06 was less than 25,000 units behind the World War II shooter and was itself nearly tied by another PlayStation 2 sports game from Electronic Arts, MVP 06 NCAA Baseball.

The fourth and fifth slots saw the top two titles on Nintendo and Sony's portables go head to head. In the end, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories for the PSP barely edged out Mario Kart DS. However, both handhelds had three games apiece in the top 20, with Animal Crossing: Wild World (2nd) and Nintendogs: Dachshund & Friends (16th) selling more combined units than SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo (14th) and Need for Speed: Most Wanted 5-1-0 (18th).

As usual, the PC charts saw the same group of popular games playing musical chairs. World of Warcraft was the month's number-one game, earning over $2.9 million with just under 65,000 units sold. That was far ahead of the top 10, which was made up of recurring PC chart guest stars The Sims 2 (2nd), Age of Empires III (3rd), Civilization IV (4th), Call of Duty 2 (5th), The Sims 2 Nightlife (6th), Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 (8th), and Battlefield 2: Special Forces (10th), as well as new entrants Battlefield 2 (7th, up from 15th) and Zoo Tycoon 2 (9th, up from 13th).

I find it weird that people are supporting only one system in the first place. Good games are good games no matter what system they are on. Sure I can understand someone wanting to justify there purchase of so and so system but why flame the competition. I bet most of us dont have shares in any of these companies so why do a lot of people here want to see certain systems fail?

If a game or a system is good, isnt that all that matters? Personally I want PSP and PS3 to do well, I want Xbox 360 to do well also, and as for NIntendo.. how could anyone take pleasure in seeing one of the greats losing money on there console. I say bring on kiddy games, and bring on adult games, there is a Market for all this stuff... (the fact that Zoo Tycoon thats over 3+ years old is still on the list for PC shows this).

The more companies that do well from these consoles means we the consumer get more games, better prices in the long term.

Im just about to hit 30 and I still love kids games. I dont understand what is meant by people when they say this something is a kids game. Arent all games targetted at the child in all of us? Sorry if thats a bit cryptic but just seems odd. Either way this list is interesting..

Basically after looking the xbox 360 and the ps3 prices, im going with a homemade gaming pc or a revolution. i like that nintendo stays modest with the upgrades in equipment and actually try to renevate not reproduce a better looking product with the same core. currently id love to have a psp but only to mod and im just fine with my ds, i generally dont hate any system anymore but with prices skyrocketing like they are what is a cheap gamer to do except look at whats reasonable
ill just hope for a ssbds and a ssbrevo to come out soon
cant get enough kicking the crap out of pikachu
GO WOW thanks for a game that steals days of my life at a time

Lol you know what is funny? alot of the people are here bashing each other
just because some people think that you are less of a person for buying a PSP
or a Nintendo DS. Or for having preference over a system. Why doesnt every one just calm down and have fun? It does not really matter if Jim thinks Paul
sucks because he like's buying and playing Mario games. and vice versa. And also it does not matter what is doing great on the sale's charts. In the end you
end up buying the games that YOU LIKE. Just Have Fun is it that difficult?

Everyones saying how bad it is that the cubes got a lot of Mario games but look at th e PS2 and XBOX one and two exclusives. Atleast NINTENDOs toppin the sales chart for their own system and not recycled third party titles. Although I will admit Mario Party is recycled.

It's cool to see CoD2 on the 360 take the top slot, but I'm worried about the message this is gonna give to publishers. "At $59, and on a system that's hard to find, we took the #1 spot! We can keep charging $59 - hell, higher even, because gamers don't mind paying more!".

ryan gamecube is almost done if youd bought yours at launch then youd be happy i got over 60 games for mine and many of these arent in production any more like timesplitters2 , moh frontline yes these may be on xbox and ps2 but gc discs are made better and its good to have it on all 3 platforms bc you dont ware the disc out as much so ryan you need to stop flaming if you wanted good games for your gc you should have got the 3rd party ones for it even if they were on xbox theres no need for you to complain then it was your choice and your choice alone ps2 is obsolete already even though they sell xbox gc and ps2 know this all 3 done their time id rather wait for a good game then a rushed game like um let see look at 007 agentunder fire for the ps2 if ea waited to release at the same time as xbox and gc versions the ps2 one wouldnt have been as bad and what about the sum of all fears which got a better rating on gc 4.4 then ps2 4.1 so my point is

all 3 current gen systems matbe even gba but it dont look like that are obsolete to the developers eyes even nintendo knows gc is kind of old so they are going this year with revolution and more ppl will buy a revolution bc of price and its potential nintendo stated they are going online this gen for free thats why gc didnt fare as good as ps2 it was better then xbox at one point with revolution playing dvds and online for free let alone nintendos full library of 20 yrs of gaming alone will sell itself

odia no it dont mean psp will catch ds at all that gta game barely beat mkds but mkds isnt the only thing that sold ds there are other games they may not be on list but others are buying for the ds the ds and psp handhelds are not sold bc of one game im sorry but thats not how it works ds has and will always have more sales then psp especally if gtalcs is ported to ps2 and xbox360 and pc which its already confirmed for ps2 and we all know how this works acouple months later we will see a xbox or even xbox360s and pc versions of this gta title same goes for gtavcs the upcoming psp title so dont count on psp catching ds after all it wont play umds any more except for whats already out and most of these arent good i guess no oo7 or titanic film will ever go to psp and psp will always lack good movies let alone fun games

Wow thats amazing!!! Considering that the 360 hasnt even met all of the 2nd shipment preorders, it rather suprising seeing a 360 game on top of the list. I love all platforms, but I would like to see a closer race between the PS3 and the 360. Imagine what type of gaming benefits that we can reap in terms of quality if the 360 can manufacture more consoles.

Sooo...Sony beat Nintendo one month and that means the PSP is back?...That doe not mean any thing! The DS is still a great system, and will continue to sell. And i'm guessing that it will sell even more when the DS Lite comes out. And the PSP never "Died" anyways...It is still one of the top selling portable gaming machines out there...I don't see what the big deal is?

    Posted Feb 24, 2006 6:55 am PT

GTA beat Mario Kart probably due to all the hype around the GTA series and its previous news controverseys. Sorta like how 25 to Life is in one of the top 10 charts GS posted; because of it hitting the news about killing cops. Sorta like how 50 Cent: Bulletproof was a dull game but hit over a million. So I wouldn't say that ONE popular game getting higher on the charts than another automaticly makes that system better.

MKS sales are going to go down because a lot of people have it already, when there are less than half of that population owning a PSP, and are buying GTA: LCS. Its going to look like LCS is exceeding MKS but its actually that MKS's sales are falling because its already massively owned.

But, besides the PSP games listed on that chart, I don't see anything worthwhile coming out for the PSP for some time, while the DS has Super Princess Peach, Metroid Prime Hunters, and New Super Mario Bros.

Notice how Liberty City Stories only just edged out ahead of Mario Kart even though mario kart was out a whole month behind, and people are saying that the PSP is back, i have both and if i was Sony i would feel that they were beaten in the long run.

Oh no, the DS is in so much trouble.

....GTA beat out the DS games for the same reason CoD2 is #1 - there are no other must-have games for the system, of course it's going to sell a ton. GTA LCS may be 1 spot ahead of any DS game, but look at how many DS games are on the charts (and positions) compared to the PSP.

LOL, Fallout your blind! Nintendo isn't dead, and they won't be dead any time soon. Sure the loss some ground this time around but they aim to bring people back and not every Mario title or kiddy type game is bad. There's some fun to be had with mario kart or the Mario Adventure games oh and Super smash Bros is another good one. Those aside Nintendo's got games like Zelda and Metroid which arfe great series and not dumbed down to appeal to a younger audience when at the same time can be played by a younger group. I do agree that some mario titles have swayed too close to being just for kids, at the end of Super Mario Sunshine you must beat bowser and baby bowser in their bath tub! A few slams on some buttons and pop the last boss is beaten... I was extremely disappointed with how lame it was. But anyways, as I said before Nintendo isn't going away anytime soon.

Another answer to all who say Nintendo GameCube is good and is for every one and is not a children console:
    "5 out of 10 games are Mario + 1 sonic(ok shadow)"
GameCube is not even for kids the only real games for GC were MGS:TS and RE games. Heck... when i was 8 I would only play Mortal Kombat and Contra HC. Even as a child I (Among many ohters) Hated Stupid Mario. nintendo GameCube is for children between 0 and 0.5 others consider them stupid EXCEPT the parents that think they are good and safe for their poor little children and "THEIR FRAGILE LITTLE MINDS" Parents: "Hey the console doesn't have GTA or MGS or HALO, thier bad bad bad games so GameCube is GREAT lets get it for little Tommy (While he is having fun with neighbors girl)". Big N you are dead on the consoles (OK Hendhelds are another case).

While it is certainly good for Nintendo to have all those first-party games in the top ten, I still wonder what Nintendo is thinking. I do realize some adults enjoy those games, but let's face it, they are primarily aimed at a younger audience. With an aging population, that doesn't seem like the smartest move. It's fine to have those games, I just think they need to diversify more. They seem to be going in the opposite direction with the DS. Here (Japan) the DS is starting to sell to seniors because of some of the recently released "brain-teaser" type games. The GC has some interesting games, but they are too few for me to justify buying one, even at its relatively low price.

How else can you explain a video game like 50 Cent: Bulletproof selling over a million copies already while some of the best games that don't involve shooting or soliciting prostitutes not even getting 500,000 copies sold in it's whole existence?

Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time not in the top 20? Fire Emblem: Path Of Radiance not in the top 10 GCN games? Dragon Quest VIII not in the top 10 PS2 games? What the heck is wrong with people! Seriously, people don't know what to buy anymore. 95% of people couldn't spot a good game if their life depended on it. And what's up with Animal Crossing: Wild World's sales? Sheesh, it's only in 6th? *sigh* Well, at least Japanese gamers seem to have a bit more common sense... they actually buy good games... (almost 2 million Animal Crossing's sold!). Jack Thompson says that video games are corrupting the youth. I take the complete opposite stance. My stance is that the youth are corrupting the video game industry, by buying garbage games.

Heh, the fact that most of the Gamecube's titles top 10 are Mario makes sense. People don't buy a Cube for that version of any Multiplatform game; they buy it for the first party stuff. that's the olny stuff on there worth while.
