Phil Harrison talks PS3 at GDC

New keynote address by Sony exec to be titled "PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box." Speech will discuss next-gen console's potential.

The question on a lot of gamers' minds is "When are we going to get some official information on the PlayStation 3!?!?"

Sony and the Game Developers Conference gave an answer today: March 22. Phil Harrison has been announced as the latest keynote speaker at the 2006 Game Developers Conference, joining other luminaries behind the podium such as Nintendo's Satoru Iwata and Maxis' Will Wright.

Harrison is the president of Sony's worldwide studios, and he helped unveil the PS3 at last year's E3 press conference with the "rubber duck" tech demo. The speech will be titled "PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box," and will outline Sony's business plans for the PS3 as well as how its technology will help steer the industry through the next generation.

"Mr. Harrison's talk comes at the perfect time for the eager developer audience at the GDC," said Jamil Moledina, director of the Game Developers Conference. "His discussion will answer many questions developers have for Sony at this stage before the impending PS3 launch."

The 2006 Game Developers Conference takes place March 20-24 in San Jose, California. Harrison's keynote speech is scheduled for Wednesday, March 22 from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. PST. For more information on the GDC, head over to the official Web site.

I'm getting really sick of people saying that Sony is nothing but smoke and mirrors and BS. Just because Sony doesnt want to launch their system on MTV or purposely leak things out, doesn't mean that they our full of BS. t means that they do not think the system is ready yet. Instead of whining and making crappy jokes, be patient! (Note: On some websites I noticed people saying that delaying the PS3 will cause the 360 to have a lot more games then PS3... How is this possible when only ONE game has been released for the 360 this year!? Were coming up to the begining of March , and Xbox 360 still has only released ONE game! Man, and I though the PSP had a crappy game library...)

Note: How is Micrsoft getting more money (while sony waits)when you can't find a Xbox 360 in stores; nor online (without sinking in at least $500 and that is usually without the hard drive)?

I believe they're taking the necessary time to ensure they create the PS3 in a revolutionized fashion. Statements like "getting out of the box" and "the next gen doesn't start till we say it does" makes me believe they're up to making something quite different than just another console.

i dunno what to say, i actually kinda like this new approach about not releasing any info about release dates... here me out... i remember waiting 9 months for the sega dreamcast 7 years ago. and once they had set their release date, i went through life always anticipating the launch date. time passed by as if it was nothing. i had lost 9 months of my life due to anticipation. i honestly don't remember anything that i had done. life is going much slower these days, and i am enjoying every minute of it. i don't want to wake up one day just to look around to see that i'm an old man. i don't know if that made any sense at all. but i do know that it made sense to me.

oh and p.s. microsoft 360, xbox, and basically all american products suck, and fall apart.

[Think I went overboard on this post...]

Sony would much rather relase the PS3 now... But its just not ready. Microsoft rushed the 360, and you see where that got them? (couldnt meet supply and demand, thus they really ruined their chances for a decent holiday season). The PS3 will probally come out sometime between April-July. I can almost guarantee that a holiday launch will not be done. Why? Mainly because it'd be extremely hard to pump out more systems after just shippig out a bunch already. Sony wants enough time between Launch date and the Holiday season, so more systems can be pumped out and supply and demand can be met. Microsoft claims that most people will go out and buy a 360 since the PS3 will not be released till late and there will be none in stock. But, that would be hard since Sony is pushing the release back SO THEY HAVE enough in stock and you STILL cannot buy a 360 in a store. And you also can't buy one online without buying a bundled pack (which is priced $500-$1000!! and some don't include a hard drive!). And a good chunk of the systems bought, are being sold on ebay! That is what pisses me off, Microsoft is really underestimating Sony. I am glad Sony is delaying the system, because I would rather have a system with a decent laucnh line up and a good ammount of games; then a system that can barely meet supply and demand, has a very overrated launch lineup (i.e. Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero), and can't even be bought without throwing in at least $500. Be PATEINT. The PS3 will be worth the wait.
Note: I am not a Sony Fanboy. I'm just not a fan of Microsoft. Their first generation of consoles were pure crap. The systems CD drive took a dump after a year or two of gameplay. Then they asked for $80 (plus shipping) to fix it. Sorry, but I do not trust Microsoft. Maybe the 360 can change my mind, but I seriously doubt it...

  • Khimarhi

    Posted Feb 17, 2006 8:27 am PT

I don't really care about the release date of the system. . It will come when it comes. The longer we wait the better it will be. Anyways it is good to know that we will get some new info at least.

You said it Titan_BG I don't understand I get in to these arguments everday about how much greater and(superior the US is to the rest of the world) yet more these same people suport the Japanese Sony over microsoft and the Canadian EA. I'm not rasist, but just proving a point. If America and or its products are so great how come "we" sure don't think so. If we don't take our products seriously how's the rest of the eastern world going to?

Others might say "well stop making crap products and we'll buy them, well the PS2 is a crap system(I don't care that there's over 1600 games for it)hardware wise yet the Japanese supported it. Why can't we have the same unity being that the US buys the most video games than the world according to NPD fun world.

    Posted Feb 16, 2006 11:10 pm PT

Might as well get a XBOX 360 and let the suckers wait until 2007 and beyond for their "next gen" console, if you are from the US you should support MS at least a little, look at the way the japanese support sony and nintendo they wont buy a western product and yet here we have all the sony fanboys not understaning how they are supporting foreign products instead of American...and yes i know much of MS is also overseas but think about the center of revenue its right here with Bill Gates so most of the money comes back to the US instead of shipping out to Japan, so go out there get yourself an Xbox 360 and enjoy instead of waiting another year with your thumb in your mouth

If FF is planned for August, why would they release the ps3 here in Sept. They are also making a few other big games, including a spin off of Dragon Quest starring Yangus. I want ps3 games not ps2 games.

I think Sony is getting too cocky... Xbox has the online market locked down (in the west atleast), and Nintendo gots the handheld and soon the casual and non-gamer market. Sony needs to stop focusing on making the mythical entertainment box and start remebering what made PS one so successfull...

  • FuguNabe

    Posted Feb 16, 2006 9:33 pm PT

More BS from Sony... well done. This hyped might be even more played out than PS2 hype. PS2 ended up being quite a let down in terms of hardware after such hype that it will be so and so bigger than Dreamcast.... Did they deliver ? Barely. More polygons but jaggies galore... I have a feeling graphics wont mean much in this generation. Who's to say Rev will have bad graphics anyway when Nintendo have shown nothing though it's speculated to be 2X-3X more graphical and overall power than Gamecube (which was no slouch and far superior to PS2 in graphics anyway). I doubt the graphics will be much better than what X360 can do. Being in Japan no doubt PS3 is the console to get for RPGs but will it as a console be any better or have more to offer than the others? I can't see it yet. While PS3 will surely have lots of 3rd-party support I doubt it's online service will be superior to MS and I doubt it will offer the innovation and unique gaming experience of Rev. It will at least have less PC genre and titles likely than X360 and more exclusives (FPS belongs to mouse and keyboard control of PC). No doubt I'll get MGS4 with a PS3 but so far the system has less showing than Rev other than spec, talks and Kojima's real-time demo at TGS...

I guess US and japan both release date in summer that's ps3... but game titles? there is not enough a few new game titles in PS3... And new more game titles early at 2007. Another PS3 with HHD cost like $500 to up. PS3 separate HHD, PS3 could low cost $300....... I don't know either I hope that sony ps3 keep to update blog
