TOKYO--It's been a long time since gamers have seen Mother. The role-playing franchise, known as Earthbound in the US, hasn't seen a new installment in over a decade, but a third chapter was finally announced earlier this year.

The game's producer, Shigesato Itoi, recently updated the official Mother 3 Web site with a first look at the new game. Three screenshots of Mother 3 (pictured) show that the game has retained its simplistic graphics and takes place in a variety of locations, such as a city park and what appears to be a museum. The site, which is in Japanese, also features an acoustic version of the game's theme music, which is downloadable as an MP3.

Like a traditional advent calendar, the Mother 3 section on Itoi's site features 16 clickable gift boxes, which can be opened on certain days. Only four of the boxes are open right now, implying that 12 more updates are on the way before Mother 3 is released in Japan on April 20. No plans to release the game in North America have been announced.

    what uh......happened with that compilation of Mother 1 and 2 (Earthbound Zero and Earthbound for us) they promised at around the arrival of the GBA way back when?

    In most of my media studies courses before I graduated each professor emphasized writing polite thought out letters to the companies. Apparently most media companies consider one letter the equivalent of 1000 peoples viewpoint. So I encourage everyone who really wants this game released here to write Nintendo an e-mail (their website has a questions/comments) expressing your interest in seeing a NA release of the game. Couldn't hurt.

    OMFG! Finally after all these damn long awaited years!!! Another Mother game! They better release it to the US! Which I am prety sure that they will.

    Not surprised it's finally in GBA form. Very glad the N64 hashing fell through. I wonder if it will have any special features available when inside the DS... But they are probably expecting a lot of play with the Micro owners. Bring this over the pond and then give us the 1+2 compilation dangit!!!

    i wonder what the game will be called here in the united states since mother 2 was earthbound here, could they pull a final fantasy and call it earthbound 2?
