Revolution gets Blitzed

Independent UK developer announces support for Nintendo's next-gen console.

While creating games for the Nintendo Revolution and its unique controller will certainly be a new experience for many developers, the console manufacturer has emphasized that it will not be an especially expensive one. If this proves true, the Revolution, compared to working with the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, could be a very attractive option for independent developers.

One such independent developer, UK-based Blitz Games, today announced that it has signed a deal for its first Revolution title, with details to be announced shortly "by a major publisher." Blitz, whose past games have included Pac-Man World 3, Fuzion Frenzy, and Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue, have worked with a number of publishers, including Namco, THQ, Microsoft, Codemasters, and Atari.

"This latest addition to our portfolio clearly signals that Blitz is one of the few major developers with the capability and technology to work on both next- and current-generation titles simultaneously," Blitz CEO Phillip Oliver said in a statement. "Our strategy of a fully featured, well-structured tool chain and cross-platform engine has really paid off and we are quickly able to incorporate these new platforms with relative ease, making our development faster and more efficient."

Blitz is currently working on a handful of unnamed PlayStation 2 and GameCube titles, and it has the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 zombie action-adventure game Possession under development at its Volatile Games division.

The second the rev comes out and people play with the controller it will lose alot of fans, mainly because you can play baseball inside with a controller! WOW! I am so amazed...because i thought baseball was only playable on video games and not in real life! Give me a break Nintendo

When you n00bs are spamming barbie jokes I'm going to make a comment that is not related. I think Blitz is either working on Possession or some other dark type of game.

Be still my sarcastic heart! Oh well, hopefully the controller doubles as a Universal Remote so it'll at least be good for something. Nintendo = Kids = Zelda (adinfinatum), more Mario. It's a two horse race (and I'm not talking Barbie Horse Adventure)

That's good to know that not all small developers are gonna close their doors, or be bought by another company. Good for Nintendo.

There is a major lack of knowledge about the inner workings of the video game industry here. First off I saw a comment talking about how Blitz is making current and next gen games with the same software he hoped they wouldn't suck. Well, games have been made with the same or similar software for 10-15 some-odd years. The core of that is C/C++, sure the compilers have changed, some of the tools, but the core is the same now as it was on the PS1. Heck, the PS2 still uses C instead of C++. Assets are what makes the game look next-gen more than anything. If you have good sounds and great artwork, you basically have a next-gen title, the software used to create it only affects the speed and complexity of the code.

Now, normally I'm not one to defend Nintendo or anyone that makes Nintendo games, but leave Blitz alone for making a Barbie game. Once again, you people have no idea how things work in the industry. You have to make games like that as a small time developer to make money. Games like that cost next-to-nothing to make and sell 500,000 - 1,000,000 copies. That kind of money paves the way for risk-taking and real ingenious games. You don't get mad at EA for making a Madden game every year with only minor changes. What kind of cash cow do you think that is?

All I'm trying to say is do your homework before you start throwing around "educated criticisms"... or else you'll sound like a buffoon to 90% of the people that actually read what you post.

Why does everyone seem to forget that the Rev will work with GCN controllers and that there will be "shell" add-ons for the remote-style controller to make it more like a traditional one? Multi-platform games won't be that different on the Rev when compared to PS3 and X360 except the sweat on your character won't be as shiny and the physics for hair-bounce might not be as hyper-real. It is the exclusive games that will be a totally different experience from the other platforms.

Whenever a company works exclusively with Nintendo they seem to do better. Like Silicon Knights rocked when it was Nintendo exclusive, but before that they were just average. Rare rocked when they were with Nintendo, but now they are just average. Nintendo has a way of bringing the best out of SOME companies, and hopefully Blitz will be one of them.

The more support the better, I'm betting over time once developers see what can be done with the REV there'll be loads of support.

Doesn't really bother me. When I buy a Nintendo console I buy it specifically for the 1st party games. Of course I also game on a PC, xbox, and plan to buy a 360 (and maybe a PS3) so maybe my view on 3rd party support would be different if the only next-gen I was buying was a Revolution. Honestly I don't think it really matters to the big cheeses at Nintendo either. They know they have a dedicated fanbase that will buy every console and they seem to make a profit on every one that they release.

  • unreal_ed

No worry for 3rd party support because the revolution is the console that will revolutionize console FPS ! With its controller console Fps are more than pale copy of their pc counterparts and Fps games are today's top selling games.

"If they make a mini-game party for the Revolution/TBA it will be fun because you could use the controller for different challenges."

If Blitz releases this game then what about Mario Party Revolution? This would just cause more and more stagnation.

I agree with xiedog once again. Playstation does the "shotgun" style release meaning they will put out 10 games. Out of those 10, maybe 2 will be top sellers, three more worthy of playing/renting and the other five complete disappointments. Good thing is that out of all those "disappointments", you will most likely find a game that YOU actually like, even though alot of people didnt. The bad thing is sifting through all the ones that just dont cut it. Okay so the company made Barbie adventures. They also made Pac Man world 3. Who really knows what game the company is working on. Maybe a Pac Man for the Revo. Revo needs some ammo and im glad to see the small developers jumping on board to help out. Like stated earlier, this small company might just make the next suprise blockbuster hit. They also mention in this news post about a "zombie" game called possesion. Thats a far cry from Barbie and her horse adventure.

Who said anything about Barbie 2? Once one company starts, others will follow, and after a few hundred independant companies make games, one of them is bound to make a really amazing one, and it will be REVO ONLY, until PS4 and Xbox 720 come out with the same controller as REVO. Smart move big N!

    Posted Feb 13, 2006 8:32 pm PT

Well instead of bringing out the bad like barbie how about we look at the other ones like Fuzion Frenzy because I think that was like the top party game for Xbox and is still in the top 5 party games for Xbox. If they make a mini-game party for the Revolution/TBA it will be fun because you could use the controller for different challenges. Overall its good news whether you see so or not because it is one more on the developers board for the Revolution/TBA.

@goatbowler. Not everyone who buys a nintendo systems buys it exclusivly for nintendo games. Excspecially with this new controler a game for the revolution will be completly diffrent then a game for the PS3 because the game play will be diffrent. I think its good news to hear that 3rd party devs are intrested in the revolution but this particualar devolper's announcement doesnt have extreamtly excited.
