Driver sequel headed for PSP

Atari confirms portable edition of Parallel Lines under development at Sumo Digital.

After getting burned by the heavily hyped but critically unsuccessful Driv3r, Atari took the franchise back into the shop and performed a total overhaul. Gone are the setting and protagonist of the original games. Now the series is set to make a fresh start with a new lead man in 1978 New York City in Driver: Parallel Lines.

What better place for a fresh start than on a fresh platform? Atari today confirmed that Parallel Lines is headed for the PSP in addition to the already announced PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions, and is being developed by Sumo Digital. Sumo Digital is no stranger to racing games or PSP development, as it has worked on OutRun 2 for the Xbox and the PSP editions of TOCA Race Driver 2 and Virtua Tennis. The possibility of a portable Parallel Lines first surfaced last night in a report on Shacknews, which cited a "well-placed and reputable source."

The PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of Parallel Lines are being handled by series developer Reflections Interactive and should be out in March. Atari has yet to announce a release date for the PSP edition.

    I have had bad experiences with the driver series, they seem all to suck, the second wasn't as bad as the third one, that for sure.

    Port Supported Portable, heh that is accurate so far. Although that does seem to be changing little by little, they need to speed it up. I don't mind so much when they release a game to PSP and PS2 at about the same time, it is just the blatant porting. I would guess that you will see original PSP content really start to show up around the launch of the PS3, since it will be much more difficult to simply port those games over. As for the topic of this thread, I'll wait and see how a new Driver turns out before buying.

    PSP = Port Supported Portable....
    Seriously, when it is going to get some REAL ORIGINAL games?
    Wonderful Hardware, lacking software....
    At least, if this trend continues, Sony will be forced soon to lower its price.
    PSP at $ 170, great!!!!

    Driver 1 and 2 were pretty good. Driver 3 sucked bigtime. Lets hope they can turn things around.

    ringbling, Driver 2 is what set the standard for the future of the grand theft auto series...It was far from a rip off, since prior to GTA 3, all of GTA games were top down views and had plots completely unreleated to Driver series

    Driver has not fared well with critics, has it really sold enough to justify a PSP version? Or is this just a mediocre brand being the only title for a developer short on ideas?

    I haven't played Driver since part 2 when they did the carpy GTA rip off. Driv3r received such horrendious reviews (which I normally ignore) I couldn't bring myself to even rent it. For me, this is the last chance for the Driver series.

    Driver? Drivel more like!
    The first two games were great. Part 3 killed the franchise. I hope they bring the series out of the hole it's in while it still (I hope) has some sort of fan base. One more flop and the series is finished!
