Stargate enters MMO universe

Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment secures TV license for its maiden voyage into game development.

With Stargate SG-1 on the verge of becoming the longest-running American sci-fi TV show ever, it seems about time that someone took a crack at turning it into a massively multiplayer online role-playing game for PCs. That someone will be the new development house Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, the company announced today.

Stargate Worlds will let players explore the universe of the film as soldiers and scientists, creating alliances and trade while defending humanity from hostile alien forces. Little has been revealed about the title, but it will draw upon both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis for inspiration.

While Cheyenne Mountain has no games to its credit, its management team has plenty of industry experience. Vice president of product development Joseph Ybarra started in the industry more than two decades ago as a producer with Electronic Arts. Games to his credit include PC classics such as M.U.L.E. and Wasteland and MMO games like Shadowbane and The Matrix Online. Art director Stu Rose worked on many of Blizzard's PC hits, from Diablo to World of Warcraft, while creative director Chris Klug cut his teeth as a game designer with the 1981 sci-fi RPG Universe and in more recent years worked on the sci-fi MMORPG Earth & Beyond.

Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment and MGM Interactive entered into the licensing agreement for Stargate Worlds last September, shortly after a previous game based on the TV series apparently imploded. A release date for Stargate Worlds has yet to be announced.

It's about time someone did this, but it needs to be quality, and worthy of the series. Just because it's the only game capitalizing on this idea, doesn't mean that they can put as little effort into it as possible.

While I am a huge fan of the Stargate series, i have to say that I am worried about the success of this game. Looking at the past games that the members of the company have had a hand in creating, the person that has been successful is the Art Director - Stu Rose - so you know the art work is going to be amazing. While E&B was a good MMO it only lasted for 2 years. I was part of the open beta for Shadowbane, and it had more bugs than an art farm and the game flopped.
I just hope that they learned something from these games, and can make this Stargate game what we are expecting, and then more.

Message to the developers: PLEASE DON'T MAKE THIS GAME FLOP.
I reckon as long as they retain a lot of the mythology that underlies the Stargate universe and give the game a strong story/rpg atmosphere like WoW then it should work. It won't be the best but hopefully it won't be dismal either. The game would certainly have a more original setting compared to "medieval"-type games like WoW and Everquest

i have to say that this would be a great idea for a game - MMO im not so sure cuz of lag and stuff like that - if it was a first person and it ran without too much lag and as stated earlier by billybob7897 the DHD would so need to be active and not just a drop down menu - and what would be cool is if like after a certain lvl you could "create" somehow a planet almost so that you could dial in to there but sounds like a good concept anyway i mean i was looking forward to the alliance but this sounds great...
i mean i know and i apologise for stating things that i think would be great IG as its too early but i have to say that it would be Fing fantastic if as a player you could actually control the ships in the series i mean that plus a vast universe (probably not straight away but they would have to introduce Pegasus soon ) and plenty of NPCs running about in large numbers and it being more MMOFPS and not MMORPG would be amazing
sounds like good fun and i hope it wont be canceled like alliance
    GO SG1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's so bad that some of the pc games are starting to look alot better then some next-gen games (ps3 anybody). I mean look at those screenshots I might get this game and I don't even really watch stargate sg-1.

I wonder if this will end up anything like the "shadowrun" microsoft is putting out for the 360. A great Idea poorly executed that solely dissapoints all its fans...
I sure hope the SG MMO doesn't end up like the poor excuse of a game shadowrun is shaping up to be.

    stargate....mmo...............*slashes his wrists*

seriously, the series is possibly the best series I have ever watched, and I absolutely LOVE to catch it on tv every week, but the idea of ANY kind of game made out of it is just depressing. all it's going to do is cash in on all the fans of the show stupid enough to buy anything with the name "stargate" written on it. look at Star Wars Galaxies, people. this game isn't going to be anything better with the exception of graphics. sci-fi games just don't really work all that well in MMORPG environments most of the time (sure, there are exceptions, but the majority rules here), and TV based games suck 90% of the time, and the biggest hit against this one is the fact that a company that has NO idea what it's doing is going to be making it.....this is just a sad, sad attempt to cash in on the series and I'll be greatly shocked to see it with anything above a 5.0 in ratings across the board.

What would make or break it for me is price. I don't play any one game enough to warent spending $15 dollars a month. Hopefully they'll follow Guild Wars and give us free online play. I don't care if they never update the game, as long as I only pay for it once. Also, if it cost money, it will be hard to surpass WoW.

The coolest thing about any Stargate game would be dialing the gate. You could look up an address on your galaxy map or just dial random symbols and find an uncharted planet. If they make it so you go up to the DHD and then select a planet out of a list to dial, it would ruin everything.

Well, nothing was really confirmed on The Alliance, didn't the developer and someone split, and are debating over who has rights to the game?

Stargate Kicks A$$! If it first person, and you get to play as the AZGARD, Go' Oud, Jaffa and much more, whats much to ask for. As long as it does end of like the new SWG, dont really care.

"Stargate" as an MMO? Mmmm, doesn't really sound that attractive. It would make for a great action game but MMO? Nah. They should push on with "Allegiance."

I don't know if anything will come close to WoW ever again really. WoW has been the biggest thing since EQ1 simply because of it's casual playstyle. So many games adopted play styles in which in order to play you had to make a time commitment, and in WoW you could hop in for 30 min and still get something done, plus it had something for everyone. Stargate worlds I think will start off at least primarily as a fan based game, but if it does well could spread.

Sounds good, but i still would have preferred a full single player game. MMO's are fun, but then theres that monthly subscription. Still it could work the same a Guild Wars!?! won't keep my hopes up though.

    Posted Feb 1, 2006 2:12 am PT

I am just not sure how this will work.

Oh I do sorely hope it works. I love SG1 and Atlantis (recently loved) to death. I will buy this game either way, but it better work. GOD DAMNIT YOU BETTER MAKE IT WORK.

If anything sci-fi goes to MMO it should be Firefly. That is so freaking obvious on how it should work. Its not too late to switch gears guys. You would have engineers, doctors, soldier, companion (winky!!!), and other classes. You could choose to join the alliance military or go rogue. Or it could be set during the war, and you could choose independence. You could climb the ranks of a government, or get bigger and bigger ships if you solo. Form 'crews'. It would be great.

Look I am all for this, I just don't want to be sitting infront of a Goauld temple honing my translation skill, and keep getting friend cause some random Jaffa staffs me in the back cause my translation skill takes 5 whole minutes. Yeah, I can see the lame in this.

I was really looking forward to the FPS game, I hated to hear it got canned, it looked pretty promising just from the screenshots. My hope though is that this game doesn't get screwed up. I'm a huge Stargate fan and I've often discussed with my wife what a great MMO this series has the potential to be. They literally have nearly unlimited worlds they can explore and this leaves the limitations of the game hindered only by the imagination. I'll be keeping a very close eye on this one.

  • majere613

    Posted Jan 31, 2006 6:27 pm PT

Hm. Well, the 'gates will make splitting the game into manageable reigons nice and simple, and there's even a parallel dimensions precedent in the series to justify instancing, if they decide to use it. I suppose the big question is who the enemies will be- Wraith, Aur'i, Gaou'uld I suppose. (Apologies for the phonetic spelling, I have no idea )
How many players will it take to take down 1 prior?

  • PutU2REM

    Posted Jan 31, 2006 12:37 pm PT

Okay, for starters, I think SG-1 is a stupid show. (Don't hurt me!) Plus, there's a stigma attached to Stargate (namely that it's only for those as nerdy or nerdier than me), and that's going to drive away gamers that even remotely resemble casual. With that said, it could still be a fantastic game and a great success. WoW has opened people's eyes to MMO's, and the sci-fi MMO sector is pretty sparse ... wait, "Anarchy" IS the sector.

I loved Stargate until Jack {Richard Dean Anderson} left.He was a great actor in Stargate.I think now I am more of a fan of Atlantis.I hope this will go well it would be a good game if it has the old cast from Stargate SG1 and the main guys from Atlantis also.

I would love if this would come to PS3 too one more reason I would buy the system. If it goes well making this it would be awesome it also has great ideas to be a great online game.
If xbox360 can get Star Trek why not PS3 get Stargate.I hope if this goes well the other Stargate game could come back and make it onto the next gen systems.Alliance looked like it would have been a fun game to play.
