Monkey Balls goin' platforming

Sega's simians leave puzzle-based levels for adventures with new story-based gameplay, enhanced abilities.

When gamers think of Super Monkey Ball, they think of rolling monkeys around stages. And golf, tennis, hang gliding, billiards, baseball, bowling, and whatever minigames Sega has thrown into the series' many releases.

Gamers can now add platform-style gameplay to the ever-expanding list, as Sega today announced Super Monkey Ball Adventures for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and PSP (a first for the series). The game is being developed by Traveller's Tales (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) and will be available in Q3 2006.

The main monkeys--Aiai, Meemee, Gongon, and Baby--will now ape around five Monkey Ball kingdoms to help a prince and princess peacefully reunite their world. The gang will have new abilities, including the power to stick to walls, hover, and turn invisible.

When saving kingdoms seems a bit too much, gamers can relax with six minigames, three of which are brand new. The PSP version will feature Wi-Fi multiplayer and an exclusive card-trading game.

Sega has not yet announced pricing or rating information for Super Monkey Ball Adventures.

This is so crap, supermaonkey ball is a great game without being turned into a platformer. Now it'll just join the barell of crap platformers that are just made for the sake of it.

This is the perfect example of a simple series that should stay simple...i hope they do just that. I hope Monkey Ball doesn't get too fancy and yet stay fresh and fun.

Ugh, I can't believe they are turning this into a platformer. I like platformers, but SMB doesn't seem like it would be a good platformer.

I hope that people are smart enough to choose the GameCube version since the DualShock 2 sucks balls.

If I heard that Traveller's Tales was making another game in the 90's, I wouldn't have been impressed. Their SEGA-related track record includes underwhelming games such as "Sonic R," and "Sonic 3D Blast," just to name a couple. They did release "LEGO Star Wars," however, and that was spectacular. (Don't knock it till you've tried it, regardless of what you think of LEGOs.) Therefore, I'm not going to consider this game doomed yet. We'll see.

I doubt the change to a platformer will work out well.

If there was ever a game that should be in Xbox Live Arcade, this is it. I guess i'll get it for PSP, which is also a good platform for it, but damn, make this game (or even the older ones) available for 10-15$ online and it would probably be extremly popular.

I never really thought the monkey ball games were worth the light of day. Who knows maybe this one makes the series a mainstream hit.
