Sam Fisher aborts spring mission

Splinter Cell Double Agent locked up until September 2006 "to deliver the highest quality gaming experience."

When the next installment of Ubisoft's Splinter Cell series was announced in December, its projected spring 2006 release date may have left many fans thinking, "Gee, that was fast!" Reality reared its ugly head today, as the publisher has announced that Splinter Cell Double Agent won't make its springtime romp, opting instead for a stealthy September release.

SC: Double Agent

Get a glimpse of a game you can't play until summer.

"Ubisoft is extending the launch of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent in order to deliver the highest quality gaming experience," a company representative said in a statement. "The additional development time will allow for a simultaneous worldwide launch on all platforms and will allow Ubisoft's development teams to push the technical boundaries on each platform."

Sam Fisher's next mission will see him infiltrating a terrorist organization from within. Players will straddle the line between good and evil as they complete objectives for both the terrorist cell and the National Security Administration.

Splinter Cell Double Agent is currently being developed for the Xbox 360, Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, and the PC. For more information, sneak over to GameSpot's previous coverage.

i wish they never announced games or anything really. i wished they just sprung it on us. and the only commercials on tv were ones for products that got released that day.

for example im a huge starwars fan. and i watched every single starwars ep3 trailer like a million times. i wish i hadnt. it would have been a huge surprise what happened to me in the movie.

and with the ps3 if i didnt know about it time wouldnt be taking so long till the still unanounce release

I knew this game wasnt gonna come out for a WHILE.. Seriously, i am not THE SLIGHTEST bit surprised..if you thought this game was going to come out in March for the 360 your an idiot

  • its_inevitable

    Posted Jan 26, 2006 5:22 pm PT

I was fully expecting this, March is way too early.
Ubisoft seem to be the only publisher who will only release games once they're finished.

u guys aren't very bright this game had been worked on since chaos theory was started because ubisoft switches developers, for example, pandora tomoro finished and the team that made PT start DA while montreal worked on Chaos after making the first one

so they get 2 years for each game

i can live with that. i want it to be a good game if rush it it might suck.,and that would be a bad. the last tomb raider was screwed up because they didn't take the time. i think.

as long as it has great storyline and gameplay it doesn't matter when it comes out it will be worth the wait.......

I wish most people were as reasonable as most of you here. There's gonna be a handful of pissed GameStop customers at work who reserved it thinking it was coming in March or whenever.

Ubisoft always delivers on Splinter Cell and september is my birfday so all the better. besides, as long as Ghost Recon sticks with its march release, Ubisoft already has a big release then. so one for the spring, one for the fall. means big win for all of us gamers. Besides, in that time, for all we know vast graphics enhancement or what not. who knows, possibly found out some more features on 360 to bring out and polish. whatever the case, we win either way.

Its good to know their taking their time to make it as good as possible, but its a huge blow to the second wave of Xbox 360 games due out this spring.

how is GS hiding something? The article says it's being released on all platforms, and then later in the very same article it clearly states which platforms it's being developed for. Nowhere does it mention PS3.

I don't mind the delay and it's not that long of a wait anyway. I rather spend my money on well-polished product than one that requires constant patching.

they better deliver NextGen game, or else....

    Posted Jan 26, 2006 12:17 pm PT

Why would they announce it and then delay it? To make you want it, and mak you keep thinking about it. Pretty slick marketing, and hopefully the end product is that much better for the delay.

I'm fine with the delay, but I'm not fine with the trend. I really wish publishers and designers would get a handle on their own capabilities. How can they miss the mark by 6-9 months. Did they think it was almost done and then suddenly realize it was nowhere NEAR being done? How is that even possible?

I am very happy about that bc if it came out early I would have to buy an Xbox360
but now I can wait to buy PS3.
now we all have another reason not to buy Xbox360

Can't say I'm surprised. But at the same time, I can't say I'm not a bit disappointed. As a long time fan of the series, with a new 360, it was definitely something I was looking forward to.

I suspect that Ubi announced it when they did, for March, to include it in their Q1 earnings estimates, to keep their stock jumping. Now that they're 1/3 into that quarter, pushing ti back will feel Q3. Any coincidence that it was moved from the 3rd month of Q1 to the third month of Q3? Probably not. The initial announcement was for financial reasons. The push is for quality reasons. Besides, they have GRAW releasing to the 360 in the March timeframe. That'll be enough to carry their financials for the quarter.
