MGS digitally stripped for PSP

Konami brings interactive comic featuring Solid Snake and Metal Gear characters to Sony's handheld.

SAN FRANCISCO--The 2006 Konami Gamers' Day in San Francisco had more than just games on display today. Wilson Cheng, product manager at Konami Digitial Entertainment, said, "I am very happy to announce that Konami will be introducing a new type of genre that combines different types of media onto one UMD disc."

Thankfully for longtime Konami fans, the subject of the "new genre" is something gamers will be very familiar with. It also appears to answer questions raised by legendary designer Hideo Kojima, who recently told Famitsu that he was working on a non-game project for the PSP called Metal Gear Solid BD.

Metal Gear Solid Digital Comic (working title) is an interactive comic book-style story from franchise creator Hideo Kojima and producer Noriaki Okamura. Artwork will be provided by Australian comic book artist Ashley Wood, who fans may know from his work on Todd McFarlane's Spawn and the Metal Gear Solid comic books.

"MGS Digital Comic goes way beyond just clicking through scanned comic book pages," said Ryan Payton, international manager of Kojima Productions. "It provides an involved interactive experience as players must investigate the MGS story, link together plot points, and complete the puzzle of the Metal Gear narrative through multiple play throughs."

It's unclear just how interactive the comic will actually be, but a trailer shown at the event certainly confirmed it will be animated. Voice bubbles appear in sequence with the game's audio, and static images slide across the screen as comic-style effects like "Bang!" or "Pow!" appear onscreen when characters fire bullets.

Konami has not announced a release date or price for Metal Gear Solid Digital Comic.

Didn't any1 read the top comment this is just another MGS thing for the PSp. The game you've all been wating for is called "MGS: Portable Ops" and that looks awesome. definitely the multiplayer feature.

What is it with Konami and these lame spin off things for the PSP?
Do they just not want to commit to a full proper game or something?
Oh well, I suppose it's better than pure ports.

Wat i dont understand is why they are using a really crappy art style compared to all the cover & concept art for the game, that was so much cooler than this mess, even though i did get my hands on the original issues when the MGS1 comic came (only cos im a crazy fan), im still peed off.

Please do not tell me that this is the hyped new Metal Gear Solid "game" Kohima was hinting about. Please instead, tell me that this has absolutely nothing to do with that. Tell me it's only something to tease us some more.

    Please!

MGS:Choose Your Own Adventure. Roffle at the dialogue... okay, Crab Battles aside, the only goofy thoughts I want to hear from Snake are about Cardboard Boxes. Guess I should check out the existing comic book series before I pass judgement... but I give it a week for a fan-dub. SNAAAAAAKKKE!!!

yeah... sounds like suckage to me - but then if I were one of those who owned a PSP I'd buy anything to have a reason to dust it off - however, sounds really kool for die hard MGS Fans

It sounds interesting, and could be a new avenue for other comic book publishers to consider (Marvel, DC, Image, etc...) I think the whole thing will hinge on the price. $9.99 is probably the highest you could go for a UMD comic book.

Great idea...but the story is already well known and what...this is te 3rd retelling? No thanks. The art is a bit too "off"...it'd be much better with the character designer of their ACID! games.

Yoji Shinkawa should be behind the artwork and not Ashley Wood.

So is this based on the original MGS? If so, the scene with the, uh, posterior could be from when Meryl and Snake are in the bathroom outside the command room.

PSP is going weird places. I have friends who spend way to much time putting stupid crap on their PSPs(porn and junk like that). It all comes from their pc. Then they turn around and never take the damn thing out. They use them a few feet from the pc. It all seems ridiculous to me and a big waste of time. Games; yes, other crap; no way.

depends on how long it is to go through, if it can be completed in 1 or less hours i won't buy it. but if its 2 or more hours (which is a long time for just a story) then i'll consider. if its 3 or more hours i most definately will buy it, MGS is awesome.

It is not a game, it is a comic book? I wonder what the D&B value of the first printings are going to be like. . .
