Star Trek: Legacy beaming onto 360 and PC?

Bethesda reportedly publishing new Star Trek strategy title; Paramount, developer confirm game's existence, demur on details.

Christmas was last month, but many gamers got a nice present over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Word broke on the forums of the fan site Star Trek: Gaming Universe that a new, as-yet-unannounced Star Trek game is in the works. Currently, the only game based on the popular television and file franchise known to be in development is the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Trek Online.

It all began on Friday, when STGU's founder reported that the next issue of Game Informer magazine has an article about Star Trek: Legacy, a new game for the Xbox 360 and PC. Posters said Legacy, being developed by Mad Doc Software, is set for a September 2006 release, and will span the eras of all Star Trek television shows--Star Trek, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise.

To paraphrase Mr. Spock, Mad Doc is a logical choice for a new Star Trek game, as it developed the 2001 real-time strategy title Star Trek: Armada II. Since then, the company has gone on to publish the more acclaimed Empire Earth II and its forthcoming expansion, Empire Earth II: The Art of Supremacy.

The Star Trek: Legacy posts are also apparent confirmation of a rumor from January 2005, which hinted that a Star Trek strategy game was in development. The source of this rumor was a post on the STGU forums from Harry Lang, the director of the licensing division of Paramount Pictures, the Viacom subsidiary that owns the Star Trek license.

Late this past Friday, Lang returned to the STGU board to confirm a new Star Trek game was indeed the works--although he avoided details. He dodged the subject of the game's title but appeared to confirm the release date mentioned in the forums. "Like I said before, traditional ST single player/multi player games have returned--and before STO ships," Lang said, referring to Star Trek Online's tentative early 2007 launch window.

In his January 2005 STGU post, Lang mentioned that a Star Trek game would be coming to a "non-traditional platform" by the end of 2005--presumably the Xbox 360. In his more recent post, he made brief mention of the "stringent requirements for Xbox 360" development, apparently confirming that the Star Trek game was coming to the console.

Though Lang also did not mention a developer, he did say the new Trek game has been in the works for a while. "Just because it was announced in this issue [of Game Informer], [it] doesn't mean development just started," he said. He also promised the game would be visually spectacular. "As for graphics, once you see the screenshots and this thing in motion, you will be blown away," he said.

However, some of Lang's comments were more confusing than enlightening. Responding to posters' claims that Star Trek: Legacy would be published by Bethesda Softworks, Lang made an aside about a "different publisher," making it unclear which firm would distribute the game.

However, the confusion was cleared up on Monday, when GameSpot contacted Mad Doc regarding Star Trek: Legacy. A friendly rep told us that "for assistance, interviews and general information regarding the Star Trek: Legacy title, all inquiries should be directed to Bethesda Softworks." For its part, Bethesda declined to comment, saying only to expect an announcement "shortly."

ok, as far as I'm concerned, they need to make a good Star Trek shooter, not like Elite Force, something more along the lines of Star Wars: Republic Commando. Either that or a Retro RPG with all the original characters and the old enterprise, and everything is set in environments that look like the old corny sets but are completely interactive and huge.

Star Trek fighting game...that would be awesome...think of the scenerios...Kirk vs. Pacard? Oh yeah! Kirk would throw fists of fury while Pacard would use cheap moves like slapping, pinching, nut shots or hair pulling! Leutenant Data vs. Spock! YEAH!!! or Warf vs. Spock! Or wait...that green beast vs. Kirk! Rematch!

What Star Trek needs is a kick-ass first person shooter that let's you play as one of the Next Gen characters in a sprawling, Time-spanning adventure, like Time-Splitters, but the other times will be other times in the Star Trek universe, you know, times from the movies and TV shows. One level you could save the wales in 1984, with Kirk and the gang, in another level you could help Data and co in the 1800s with Guinan, some in the future with Janeway, etc.

what the hech i mean cool a new Star trek game... WOW i love star trek, but lets keep the honor and leave it on PC- i mean, what can u go with 12 butons? u cant do anything, startrek was cool with the mouse with star trek starfleet command, it uses the keyboard with Star trek Bridge commander - which i say are really fun and all, but a star trek on X-BOX or 360 is pushing the envelope for a good first preson star trek game!!

from Janeway's son,,, mom, thank god u are home from the Delta Quadrent

I got the new Game Informer yesterday and you should really read the article about it and see the screens. This game looks exactly like what I have been waiting for in a ST game. Seriously though, check out the article.

I'm so thrilled to hear about this news. I'm really dissapointed that there will be no more Star Trek series on TV for a while. I didn't think Enterprise was all that bad. Definitely not the best series but I guess for it to be successful it had to one-up the others. Anyway it's great to see the star trek "legacy" continuing in the form of games. This one spans the whole Star Trek timeline so it's going to be awesome. I love the Kirk era ships as much as the new ones.

Huh. I'd seriously like more of Bridge Commander with some elements from Starfleet Command mixed in (i.e. boarding and shuttles, etc.) but if this new game allows me to command some 70-odd fed Galaxy's then I'm all for it!

Is there a reason that non-Star Trek fans bother commenting? If you don't like any of the series, what could you possibly hope to offer other readers of this article? Same goes for not-RTS or TBS fans. I watched at least some of every ST series, and enjoyed each one to varying degrees. Never been a strategy fan, but I could see myself getting into this one. Just gimme the chance to play as the Romulans! or the Ferengi! w00t

This could be a mint game! Only delima is whether it'll be a real-time or turn-based strategy since its on Xbox 360 (although BFME 2 is real-time). It could still be good either way. It'll be good to have a graphically awesome star trek game, since graphics in previous ones have been a little outdated.
