Dell's new PC gaming monster boasts four GPUs

The XPS 600 "Renegade" houses four GeForce 7800 graphics chips; pricey powerhouse hits market this quarter.

With much of the recent media attention focusing on next-generation consoles, such as the recently released Xbox 360 from Microsoft, PC gaming has felt like the odd man out. Microsoft's highly touted "HD era," coined for the launch of the Xbox 360, seemed like an attack by omission to some PC gamers, who had enjoyed high-definition games for years. With the world's biggest gizmo expo, the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show, under way in Las Vegas, the more malleable PC industry shot back today--and the finger on the trigger belonged to Michael Dell.

Late last year, Dell Computer affirmed its commitment to PC gaming with new additions to the XPS line, a range of computers designed specifically with high-performance gaming in mind. Today, Dell targeted the gamer with expendable income by announcing the XPS 600 Renegade, a souped-up limited edition of its gaming behemoth, the XPS 600.

The Renegade features a chassis with artwork designed by the Picasso of airbrushing, Mike Lavallee of Monster Garage fame. But it's not the looks of the box that will have gamers' heads spinning.

The computer will run four GeForce 7800 GPUs, two more than the maximum allowed in the standard XPS 600. In tests, the rig and its Intel Pentium processor Extreme Edition 955 were factory overclocked at 4.2GHz, making it one of the fastest computers (if not the fastest) on the market.

The Renegade is scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 2006 with marketing and sales largely through Dell's online site. A base price has not yet been announced, but Dell admitted it would be "a lot."

Dell is also a leader in computer displays, and he showed off a new 30-inch LCD monitor, the Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP, that he is particularly proud of. Dell proclaimed that the monitor has "over three times the resolution of so-called 'high-def gaming' that comes with an Xbox 360."

The monitor requires graphic cards that support dual-link DVI connectivity for its top-tier output. The display supports resolutions up to 2560x1600, can display 4.1 million megapixels, and has a 700:1 contrast ratio and a 178-degree viewing angle.

The monitor will be priced at $2,199 and is available now.

I heard that the case was signed by Michael Dell himself. He probably didn't even know it existed until some marketing guy shoved it in front of him.

4.1 million megapixels? That would be... uh 4.1 billion pixels then? It would have to be a DAMN big screen or its pixels should be atom sized then. I believe you mean 4.1 megapixels instead?

You can't compare a console to this, but you can also not buy this unless you have a LOT of money sitting around. Also don't fool yourselves. It's over the top right now, but no hardware lasts10-15 years like someone said. In 5 years it will be obsolete like any other current piece of hardware. Think multicore CPUs and GPUs.

I hate that DELL is the one doing this!!! If its Pre-made i want it to be by Voodoo or Falcon Northwest a brand i could be proud of AND they would have used an AMD processor just 'caus Dell and Intel have a close relationship doesnt mean they should use an Intel proc for a GAMING PC!!!!Sure its expensive BUT its worth it IF you are a true gamer. Trust me there is more expensive ones out there like Voodoo's $15K+ Machine with its 24karat Gold plated Case inside-out ,and signed by the Founder of Voodoo.

And THIS, brothers and sisters, is why it is better to have a computer than a console.

    4 Geforce 7800's , and a 4.88 GHz processor.

Dell is just going to use this computer for publicity and prestige. They know that they cannot sell this computer in sufficient numbers to make a profit, but the fact that we are all talking about it makes them successful. In either case i would not mind have that computer and neither would any of you so why go on the forum and bad mouth it?

  • glc_17

    Posted Jan 10, 2006 7:41 pm PT

Wow. That's really pointless. I have 2 7800 gtx's and I know that those are overkill. Why would you ever need 4? Nothing will support it, and the fools are insisting on using Intel.

who needs 4 gf7800 ? anywayz the cpu sucks, and dell has nothing to do with gaming

    um....
"The display supports resolutions up to 2560x1600, can display 4.1 million megapixels, and has a 700:1 contrast ratio and a 178-degree viewing angle."
2560x1600 does not equal "4.1 million megapixels". That's actually 4.1 x10^12, or 4.1 terapixels. So in otherwords, its a typo. LOL. my two cents.

    did someone already mention this?

Well, I work for Dell. Whenever one of you buy one of these, call me. I could use the bonus check at the end of the month. I'll stick with my Xbox360 with my 50" Plasma tv I won for free and my custom PC that works just fine with most every game.

Well after reading some other stuff on YAHOO they seem to say dell claims it will be about $4000, alot in comparison with other PCs but pretty well priced if u relly feel the need for FOUR gpus.. Besides but ACTUALLY supports 4 gpus? anything?

    Posted Jan 8, 2006 8:09 pm PT

Natural_Mystic I don't have to argue with you because you are simply wrong. A FX-55 can run two 7800GTXs without any cpu strain whatsoever. A 4.2 GHz EE Dual Core cpu is more than enough for 4 GPU's. That's saying that having a strain on a cpu matters, because it doesn't. Running Call of Duty 2 on max settings at 1024x860 resolution will strain two 7800GTxs and an Fx-57. By the time Renegade comes out that game will be outdated. And finally Dell made the 2560x1600 moniter for a reason.

So in the end nothing you said was right.
