Epic: UT 2007 might make PS3 launch

Mark Rein says game will be ready "when it's done," whether or not that coincides with the debut of Sony's next-generation console; will ship on PC first.

After several weeks of confusion about whether Unreal Tournament 2007 will be a PlayStation 3 launch title, definitive word on the status of the game has emerged. Ironically, that word is that the game's release date on the PS3 is still undetermined.

Following a report in the January 2006 PSM magazine, which indicated the game would be a launch title for the PlayStation 3, Epic Games has stated for the record that it only might make the console's launch. Why? Because, like most of the game industry, Epic isn't sure exactly when Sony plans to ship its next-generation console.

"Do you know when the PS3 launch is? Neither do we," said Epic vice president Mark Rein. The outspoken developer echoed the infamous tagline of his colleagues at id Software, telling GameSpot, "but we know when UT2007 will be done: WHEN IT'S DONE!" (Emphasis in the original.) Currently, the PlayStation 3 is tentatively scheduled for an "early 2006" release.

Rein continued, saying, "The question of whether we're a launch title or not is unanswerable because we don't know if the PS3 will be out before we're done or not. ... We won't ship the title on any platform before it's done, and it is too early to say when that will be."

Rein also confirmed online reports that Epic's current focus is the PC version of UT2007. "For now we soldier on with the plan to ship on PC as soon as we're done," he said. For more on that version of the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

    I think it would be in everybody's best interest if Epic took their time and released a quality game, instead of a rushed one. *looks at most of the X360 launch lineup*

    who cares if unreal tournament doesnt make it to the xbox 360 Gears of Wars is for sure to be the hell of alot better than ut 2007

    I don't care when it comes out for the PC ... as long as it delivers as good as it promises, and we get all the usual mod tools for our own content creation. Wonder if the console versions will be moddable?

    Why all they fanboyism.... I don't know why I still read posts, as 90% are biased comments. First, Xbox fanboys, you do not know for sure that UT07 will being coming to Xbox 360. It might be coming, just unannounced as a surprise. All you can do is hope, and wait. Second, PS fanboys, why do you care if Xbox 360 get it or not? You know PS3 will be getting it. Is that not enough? Why does it matter if owners of Xbox 360's are able to play it if you can too? It doesn't affect you. If you like UT then you would support it's developers. If they have it out on more systems, they make more money. They are then able to use that money to make better games and develop games more, polish them up more. In general I have favored the PS2 over the Xbox because of the amount of quality games. I am not a fanboy of any system. The more systems UT comes out on, the more money and success Epic will have. With that comes Epic making higher quility games and thats what it's about.

    I think in two days the anwser will come up about launch date of the ps3 at ces So dont trip we will get some kick ass games soon enough CES mark my words PS3 will top yahoo and ebay and websites across the globe new news and price you wait.

    It was painfully obvious that UC on xbox was a port from the pc, not the other way around. It had framerate problems out the wazoo, unlike UC2, which WAS designed from the ground up for the xbox and it showed.

    Owen_Waffle, it's the other way around, so Oni is right.
    UT2003 (PC) is a port of UC (Xbox).
    UT2003 may have been in the shops before UC, but development on it only got started after UC development was well underway.

    I hope this comes to 360 .. would be a shame if it doesnt . this game could really take advantage of what LIVE could offer .. oh and oni . i think you will find UC on xbox was a port of UT2K3

    UT 2004 killed the community. Let's hope this isn't like 2003, where the PC version was an XBOX port. I've played UT since the original demo came out in '99 and it's the PC community that made all this possible. Not MS or Sony fanboys. I just hope to god the PC and PS3 games will be connected, cause I long to mass kill Sony fanboys. Mmm yummy!

    What a surprise.

    Oh well, maybe we''l find out if this'll be a laucnh game, at CES, is Sony unveils a release date (which I doubt).

    Anyways, good to see that the game itself is still making it onto PS3.

    Oh, and for all of you who said "It'll be on Xbox 360", it won't, otherwise Epic would have officially announced it already.
