PSP gets 2D Katamari
Me and My Katamari to feature an unlockable side-scrolling minigame with retro-styled graphics.
With the Japanese release of Me and My Katamari just less than a week away, new details on the game keep rolling in. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, Me and My Katamari will include an unlockable 2D side-scrolling minigame as a bonus. The minigame, also named Me and My Katamari, features pixelated graphics with the look of a classic 8-bit game. As in the main game, the objective is to build up a huge Katamari clump by rolling it around environments and picking up various debris.
Perhaps ripped from last year's headlines, the objective of Me and My Katamari is to create new islands for animals that became homeless after getting hit by a huge tsunami. Players take the role of the pint-sized Prince of All Cosmos and roll up huge balls of debris that will be turned into new islands by his father, the King of All Cosmos. Players who make remarkably large Katamaris on a given stage will unlock the untimed eternal mode for that stage as a reward.
Other features in Me and My Katamari include a scoreboard, a gallery mode for playing unlocked movies and music, and a photo album mode where players can check snapshots they've taken of their in-game exploits. Up to 12 snapshots can be stored in the album, and they can be set as wallpapers for the PSP. For more details on Me and My Katamari, check GameSpot's coverage from Tokyo Game Show 2005.

Alphega: If you read the preview you would of known the PSP version uses the d-pad and buttons. Anyway, I wonder how deep the gameplay can possibly be because once the ball gets big, it's going to be damn hard to avoid things (not that you'd want to). But since it's a bonus item, I have no complaints at all ^_^

I say my hands will hurt after 15 mins. The PSP stick sucks and there isn't a second 1. I will stay with the other 2 Katamari games.

Humm it does sound kind of blah... a 2d side scroller. It is only a mini-game so it is not like the whole thing will be that way. Portable Katamari will most likely rock. The screenshots from the regular 3D game are looking good.

So what do you do, just roll to the right and watch the ball grow? Sounds like it'd get boring fast.

Yeah on that 2D version... What do you, just hold Right down and walk to the end of the stage gathering everything up? O_o Or occasionally change direction and backtrack everything you couldn't pick up earlier? O_o

Wow, that's neat, but I wonder how the 2D version is going to work if the person can only go in two directions. I hope the DS version has this too.
