Hollywood and Games Summit announced

GDC organizers teaming up with Hollywood Reporter for film-game crossover event.

The past year has seen the game and film industries become ever more intertwined. Steven Spielberg inked a three-game deal with EA, Peter Jackson signed on to executive-produce the Halo movie, and James Cameron let slip he is simultaneously developing the game and film versions of his next project, Battle Angel.

With so much synergy going on, it was just a matter of time before someone decided to stage a conference designed to bring the film and game worlds together. Today, leading film trade the Hollywood Reporter and CMP Media, organizers of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), announced they are co-organizing the Hollywood and Games Summit. The event is scheduled for June 27, 2006, at a to-be-determined venue in Beverly Hills, California.

As one might guess from the workman-like title, the event is designed to bring the two worlds together, with Reporter and CMP editorial staff "collaborating on the program agenda." Though the two companies' joint statement announcing the event did not go into specifics, it did say the program would serve the summit's express purpose to "allow leaders from the respective industries to interact and discuss best practices for strategically marketing original IP via both media to greatest effect."

"Some of Hollywood's most creative and successful crossovers have resulted from game visionaries collaborating with their counterparts in movies, television and music," said Chris Marlowe, the Reporter's editorial director of digital media. "In the same vein, we're excited about the crossover opportunities that arise by partnering with industry leader CMP on a new and needed event."

Uwe Boll will be there too, right? Hehe.

Unfortunately, most games based on movies (and vice versa) are nothing more than commercial projects, no new ideas. Games set in the world of a movie? That could be fun, but game that repeats events of the movie? What's so interesting about that?

Great, more oppertunity for everyone to wax poetic about what thier next "super property" will be and how many ways they can oversaturate gamers with them. "King Kong" hairbrushes? "Sam Fisher" hair growth formula? The list is endless... sigh.

I think this summit aims for less of making game-movies blindly and more of collaboration between the two industries. What I'm interested in is the in corporation of hollywood talent in games. I'm thinking more in the terms of having hollywood talent to act, direct, write for games. This could give a gamer a better environment, feel and even allow the storytelling in the game for once to play with the gamers emotions than to make them search for the 'skip cutscene' button. I was really moved by the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 story and was left gazing at Warcraft III cutscenes but there's not been many games that actually satisfy you with both. (MGS came close for its time) For movies, well.. all I can think is that this might lead to better conversions in the end.

I think that's ENOUGH film versions of games!!! I know ONLY one GOOD film version of game - Mortal Combat and ONLY first part!!! "Not much" - you can say... But from what i saw it's the best!!! I just cant count PIECE-OF-CRAP Alone in the Dark or House of the Dead; maybe Resident Evil is good too, but they started from second game - WHERE IS FILM VERSION OF RE1?!!??!?!

swanlord: "Yes it will be Great for Xbox 360 because it will be there.....But I heard that the Sony PS3 will be vacant due to insufficient format being decided PS3= Vaporware"

What are you talking about? "Insufficient format" being decided? Do you mean if movies will be on BluRay or HD-DVD? Well, individual movie studios will decide which format they will use, Hollywood doesn't decide what everyone will use. Also, why would Sony not be there? Microsoft supports HD-DVD, Sony supports BluRay. You say Hollywood is undecided on a format (even though they don't get to decide) so Sony can't be there because they support a next-gen format. Well, Microsoft supports a next-gen format also.... You don't make any sence. You sound like a fanboy, sorry.

Third, where's a link that we can read about Sony not being there? Also, what about Nintendo, since they, to my knowledge, really have not chose to support any next-gen format at all?

It's about time that Hollywood and the game industry get together in order to realize the iportane of good games based on good movies...or better yet GREAT games based on GREAT movies. --- However, James Cameron working on "Battle Angel" ??? Is this some kind of "Dark Angel" action movie? He was the creator and producer of that tv show.
