Getting Up on the silver screen

MTV Films picks up movie rights to Mark Ecko's tagging game, promises "an homage to graffiti's rich culture."

Games and graffiti have both been the subject of Hollywood adaptations that all involved would probably prefer to forget. The 1985 Timothy Hutton vehicle Turk 182 was to graffiti what Christian Slater's 1989 film Gleaming the Cube was to skateboarding. Or what another Christian Slater film from 1989, The Wizard, was to gaming. Or what Christian Slater's 2005 effort Alone in the Dark also was to gaming.

Promising "an homage to graffiti's rich culture," MTV Films today announced that it will try to do right by both gaming and street art with a feature film based on Atari's upcoming game, Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure. Ecko himself will produce the film along with MTV Films' Gregg Goldin, and MTV's corporate sibling, Paramount, is slated to distribute the finished product.

"When I first began working on Getting Up seven years ago, I wanted to create a storyline that provided a rare look inside of one of the most influential, yet often overlooked, artistic movements in recent history," Ecko said in a statement. "Today, graffiti is a global cultural phenomenon and few understand its impact better than MTV, pioneers in its use as a motion graphics tool nearly two decades ago. I am delighted to have the ability to bring the depth of our story to life on film and look forward to working with the great team MTV has assembled."

At the moment there's no projected release date for the movie, but the Getting Up game is scheduled for a February 2006 release on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC.

MTV is one of the crapiest thing to watch on tv. But in the theatres, MTV is by far the crapiest thing to waste $7 on. I'd rather spend $7 on a half a piece of gum. As for the game, looks like **** on a stick. MTV, u consist of gay reality shows, and stupid music, and only teeny boppers and bored people watch u.

If you want to see a good graffiti movie, see Style Wars. There really doesn't need to be another film on the subject.
Well, Beat Street was kinda cool...

When you see a name like MTV on the roster for a movie it means it'll suck. Plus, knowing MTV, it'll probably be an "8 Mile" clone: A great big underground place where two people battle "tag" for supremacy!

MTV Films did release one good movie this year, the Longest Yard. The 50 Cent movie did blow though... dunno about the game, looks ok to me, but as for the movie... eh, I have my doubts.

There is already a pretty good grafitti movie called Bomb the System. It's on OnDemand for Comcast right now, not too bad.

It ain't gonna work. Game to film is hard enough, but this sounds like a nightmare. Besides I'm betting the game won't even be that good, you run around in a city spraying tags. The city is GTA but with no cool radio stations or giant shot outs. BORE.

in any case, I hope they stick to the alternate world, Orwellian setting. I can easily see them sticking Trane into NY and having run-ins with the cops and trying to be all badass... but the whole rebellion via art aspect of the game seems really compelling. I hope they stick to that.

Any proof on why the game will be bad? As in, a hands on report or a copy of the script we can look at?

I don't know why people are showing so much hate for this game. From the preview coverage that has been written up for it, it looks like it could be a pretty good surprise for next year.

Well, I grew up in the country, so even if the movie is good I probably wouldn't apperciate it as much as I should. If they can somehow get a compelling story in there anything has a shot I guess.

Turk 182 had a perfectly logical premise. Never have I been so proud of my Ottoman lineage. Timothy Hutton was a little pale for the role, but he really made me believe in this coming of age story set in the bustling city of Istanbul.
