Majority of MMOers interested in Star Trek Online

Developers of forthcoming game justify their existence with market survey--with less than earth-shaking results.

This just in: massively multiplayer online role-playing game players are interested in a Star Trek MMORPG. That's the not-so-shocking conclusion of a market study conducted by Nielsen Media Research and Perpetual Entertainment, developer of the forthcoming PC MMORPG, Star Trek Online.

The "extensive study" quizzed 600 "active gamers" who were interested in both Star Trek and MMORPGs. It then divided them into three subgroups based on their primary interest: MMO gamers, Star Trek enthusiasts, and plain ol' PC gamers. "The purpose of selecting people who fit into one of these three groups was to ensure that we were getting feedback from people who might be interested in Star Trek Online and to understand our opportunity within various target audiences," said Perpetual in a statement.

The result? Sixty-nine percent of MMO players were interested in Star Trek Online and 59 percent of Star Trek enthusiasts wanted to play the game. However, only 31 percent of regular PC gamers were eager to boldly go where no MMORPG has gone before.

    Never played an MMO before, and never cared--until now. THIS is the one I was waiting for. The uniforms look killer. Can't wait!

    As a Star Trek fan and a MMORPG gamer, trying this game out will be a definite guarantee...BUT the quality is what I'll be most worried about. I won't mind paying a monthly fee IF its good and most importantly FUN. You hear that Perpetual?

    I'd don't care for any MMORPG no matter how good. But I'll play this if it's good only because it's Star Trek

    i just visited the site and there is one item that caught my attention. STO won't make the same mistake Galaxies made . They moved the timeline
    ahead 20 years to avoid continuity issues. A good stragedy indeed.

    Would be a great MMORPG, would sell a whole lot. I'd probably even give it a try, even though I'm not into MMORPGs.

    I'm sceptical .. I don't think it would transfer well to the MMO scene .. but I have been wrong before

    I think it would just end up like another SW:Galaxies ... nuff said

    Personally, I think we should all just let the franchise rest in peace.

    OMG I have been saying for years that any developer that made a Star Trek MMORPG would make millions. I SO CAN'T WAIT!!!!. My "ONLY" hope is that it comes out for the Xbox 360 because PC games, and PC MMO's suck ass only because me and lots of other people don’t have a $3000 dollars computer.

    Agreed on the Fallout MMRPG (or even something along the lines of the old Gamma World setting)! As for Star Trek, it was inevitable, but let's just hope it's not some sort of endless "away team" thing where you run around shooting space rats with your phaser to get the phat lewts. "Sir, I retrieved the 15 Ferengi Necklaces you requested." "Excellent, Ensign! Here's your promotion!" And so on. Star Trek's military-style chain of command, emphasis on diplomacy and lack of endless hours of running around on foot seem less suited to a MMRPG... though hey, it's no more silly than doing that in Star Wars. I'll certainly be watching to see what they do with it (assuming, of course, it's ever actually released). I for one am jonesing for a good science fiction-based MMRPG, in the wake of the Imperator cancellation...

    (Edit: After reading the most recent preview, it does sound pretty interesting, though the above concerns are still valid...)

    Peckmoe- Guild Wars doesn't have online monthly fees, maybe you were thinking of WoW. Anyway, A Star Trek MMO sounds promising.

    Can we just all agree that what we all really NEED is a Fallout MMORPG? Really, come on, industry, let's stop dicking around and get it out there, then we can all have just one game and be set until the end of days.

    I think Star Trek MMORPG could have a style of gameplay that most befits the qualities that the franchise represented. The license could at least be used in a more meaningful manner than as a mere windowdressing to a standard fare gameplay. I am not bashing other games that have had found some success with the license, such as Elite Force, but the MMORPG pacing and roleplaying could provide some good opportunity for quality gaming experience.

    Star Trek is traditionally about the glamorous, high stakes life aboard a Federation star ship. Is everybody in the game going to be part of a crew? They've never really gone into what the average person does. I'm not sure how they could balance fun and sticking to the established universe.

    Star Trek would be execellent for a MMORPG, however, I just checked the site and it looks a little confusing the way the ship is setup. Perhaps if you can have simplified controls or something simple like WoW, then I'd be interested in Star Trek online.

    I'm not sure what to make of this. Star Trek has always been about exploration, but you can only do so much of that in a MMORPG. Once you get more than 10,000 players, what're the chances of a single person "discovering" a new planet? Still, as long as it's not like EVE Online, I'm game to try it. =)

    600 people is an extensive study? What the hay? Anyways, I enjoy Star Trek so I'll probably take a serious look at it. Prepare to be assimilated, resistance is futile.

    I want to see a real life William Shatner playing this on Boston Public. Or one of his retarded money commercials.
