PlayStation 2 goes 100X platinum

Sony's PS2 reaches 100-million-sold mark nearly four years faster than original PlayStation console.

TOKYO--Sony Computer Entertainment announced today that, as of November 29, total worldwide shipment of PlayStation 2 consoles has reached 100 million units. Divided into territories, the company shipped 22.22 million units in Japan and Asia (launch date: March 4, 2000), 40.65 million units in North America (launch date: October 26, 2000), and 37.14 million units in Europe and PAL regions (launch date: November 24, 2000).

SCE comments that the shipment of 100 million PS2 units since launch comes three years and nine months earlier than it did for the original PlayStation from 1995, which reached the mark in nine years and six months after its release. SCE also notes that the original PlayStation was the first game console to ever ship 100 million units.

SCE says that more than 14,000 games are currently available for the backward-compatible PlayStation 2, of which 6,200 are PS2 titles. The cumulative shipment of PS and PS2 games has reached a total of more than 1.87 billion units as of September 2005.

I'm proud to be one of the 100 millions!!!

Hope the PS3 will crush 360. Pfft, naming their console with two whole protractors' worth because "Xbox 2" sound like a losing name to "PlayStation 3".

    Haha, I love you Sony.

100 million in 5 years. This means that in the last 5 years a PS2 was sold every 1.5sec . An awesome figure indeed.

Although I am a tri-console owner (soon to be quad), I will always be a Playstation Fanboy. The PS2 may not be the greatest system, but it will always have a special place at my house because it was my first. Viva la Sony!

Cheeseburn says: " PS2 sells 100 million; at least 50 million of those are replacements for broken PS2s..."

Reply: You are an imbecile. As I explained above, this is a mathematical impossibility. If at least 50 million were replacements, then at least 50 million were original purchases, which means the total number of PS2s sold exceeds 100 million. Shows the IQ of the average cube fanboy.

People who say that a majority of those sales are repurchases of defective units are morons.

Think about it... Let's say 60% of that 100 million is a repurchase, i.e. 60 million. That means another 60% (60 million) were original purchases... which adds up to 120%, i.e. 120 million. How can 120 million purchases come from 100 million sales?

If you use your brain, every defective unit that is repurchased has to come in pairs (one original sale, one repurchase), so it's impossible for a majority (more than 50%) of the sales to be repurchases. You can't have more than half the units being repurchases, because if you combine them with the original purchase, it exceeds 100%!!

    Get a clue, fanboys.

The system sales might be a lower if sony had stoped making defective units after the first wave many of my freinds have had to buy 2-3 ps2's before they got ones that worked more than a year. My GC and Xbox have yet to break down. Sony should start testing things befor shiping. (that demo disk that deleted my data is still pissing me off!)

My cousins bought one of the first PS2, the one that shipped with inferior parts, and had to send it back to get it fixed twice once for not playing certain games (didn't fix it) and once for just not working. Then it still didn't work and they had to get a refurbished one and still isn't that great, but fortunely they are going to join the good side and buy a Xbox 360.

yep. im a ps2er... ps2ers know how much better they are than xboxers and gamecubers....... not necessarily on a graphical sense but hey, it came out first. On top of that, there is a wider variety of games... here i am stating the obvious.... ok shutting up

[Its Funny. Fanboys tending to suggest a good majority of the sales are replacements. The bottom line is that there no reason to suggest that Xbox's or Nintendo's numbers are any different. The bottom line is that sony has owned this generation. The PS2 has outsold more than xbox and GC combined and destroyed the early launcher dreamcast. If you truly believe that the majority of the sales are replacements, why would consumers buy several of the same faulty consoles? It does not make sense, but even if it were true, why would they not buy a xbox or gc instead? ]

    Morphyoss, i have your answer,

its because ms and nintendo can't make a descend game without making a ripoff of a previous one on another console and games that don't make sense.

The reason they have sold so many PS2s is because they stop working, and you have to buy a new one.

I still have my original launch PS2 and it works fine, but I use the slim line version now. 100,000,000 units sold is incredible, especially since it is only the second time in console history. And from the same company. Nice work Sony and PS2 game developers.

Yes! And they are prepared X360 is HOT!!! And people are so wish washy
    sirgeneralmoore

Sony better watch out because 60% of those 100 million people don't have a clue what real gaming is... They go buy what news media say, which is not a bad thing.

And who has more cash than microsoft. XBOX360 brand is not going any where sorry Sony fanboys!

Your wrong PS3 And Xbox360 is going in opposite directions, who going to be able to afford the Blu-ray PS3? Regular Blu-ray players are going to be retailed at 799-1500 dollars when they come out next year, how much do you think the PS3 is going to be?

PlayStation 2 will be considered one of the best consoles of our time, it was just simply made to perfection. It's everything you'd want in a console, plus the controller is great, nothing different but great.
