PSP update adds audio goodies

Sony releases new firmware for its handheld; v2.6 adds RSS channel for streaming audio, WMA support.

Sony today released the latest update for its PSP handheld, with the two major features boosting the system's audio functions. As usual, the update can be installed directly through the PSP using the System Update feature while connected to the Internet, can be downloaded from Sony's Web site to a memory stick and then installed, or can be run from an updated UMD disc.

RSS (Really Simple Syndication v2.0) functionality has been added for audio streams. PSP owners connected to the Internet can now easily check through Web sites for updated streaming audio content such as podcasts. The RSS function works only for streaming audio files, and playback only.

Windows Media Audio files are now supported with Firmware 2.6. Copyright-protected files will not be playable, but all other WMA files saved on Memory Stick Duos can be heard through the PSP's Music menu.

Smaller additions include volume adjustment in the control panel of the LocationFree player, Chinese character font support for the Internet Browser, and copy-protected video content downloadable directly to the unit's Memory Stick Duo.

Now, if they were to only add ogg Vorbis support, my only complaint preventing me from buying the system would be gone...

Hmm....guess I'll seriously consider getting a PSP now, considering that my entire music collection is WMA and now I can put it on a memory stick. That'll be nice.

hmmm, Sony must have found another security hole since that is usually the only reason they update anything.

"well at least it supports chineese character, since that was the main thing wrong with the system. You know, the brick virus was not a big deal."

I am certain that stopping PSP-modders from bricking their PSPs was VERY high on Sony's list of improvements, really. I mod everything I have, even my peripherals. . .but I'm not about to complain about Sony NOT doing something detrimental to their business goals.

It's a shame that the RSS feeds for the Hot Spot don't seem to work nicely with the PSP
