Quake 4 PC demo locked, loaded

Activision releases trial version of id Software shooter with two single-player areas, two multiplayer maps.

Gamers not sure about dropping $50 for the PC version of Quake 4 can get a taste of it, a tremor if you will, with Activision's newly released demo of the game, which can be downloaded from GameSpot.

The 324MB file includes playable portions of the game's single-player story mode, as well as a sampling of its multiplayer mayhem. Playing solo, gamers are thrown headlong into Earth's invasion of the Strogg home planet. Players get two areas to explore (and shoot the living dirt out of): a heavily guarded Strogg installation and a series of the alien civilization's air defense trenches.

The demo also offers a look at the game's multiplayer mode with one map, "The Fragging Yard," in two variations: one for full-scale skirmishes and one for one-on-one showdowns. The maps are playable in deathmatch, team deathmatch, and tournament modes.

Quake 4 is rated M for Mature and retails for $49.99. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's full review.

The demo was actually a lot more fun than I was expecting. Hell, who knows - I might even end up buying the game because of it.

Quake 4 has DM_17 and they release the demo after the game has been released becuase it would delay the game to waste time preparing a demo.

Becuase the demo would only end up being disappointing and blow off the wind behind the hype sail.

ive never understood why someone would release the demo AFTER the fact. Why not release it before hand and build some anticipation? Thats gotta help sales.

Quake 4 feels like the game that Doom 3 should have been. Recommended, great single player.

I'm not sure if you can exactly call it a rip-off, since Quake was created by the same company that created Doom. But Quake4 uses the Doom3 Engine, so this one for sure is going to have a similar feel.

it kind of is...made by the same developer, using the same engine, only real difference is a bigger focus on multiplayer...
