Peter Moore: I'm psyched
As Xbox 360 launches, Microsoft Xbox 360 hype honcho Peter Moore discusses online, the competition, Zero Hour, getting into Japan, and more.
As the countdown to Zero Hour and the Xbox 360 launch took place, GameSpot stole a few moments of Peter Moore's time to discuss the launch and Microsoft's second crack at the console market.
In the interview (linked below), Microsoft's corporate vice president of worldwide marketing and publishing addresses a variety of topics, including the supply shortage of Xbox 360s and the company's plans to move more 360s by the New Year.
"Our goal is to replenish inventory in the channel every week," Moore said. "So lots of Xbox 360s are flowing in every single week. It's not like we're shipping in and then going dry for two or three weeks."
The company will have to crank out 360s at a good clip if it wants to meet Moore's predictions for the system's launch-window unit sales.
"In the first 90 days, I believe we'll be somewhere between two and a half and three million units worldwide. Perhaps equally importantly, by the end of the calendar year [2006], I think we'll be at 10 million units worldwide."
Moore also talked about lessons learned from the company's failed first outing in Japan, as well as the reasons for and reactions to the Zero Hour launch event, where the interview took place.
"You can see it on the faces of the three and a half thousand people on the other side of this wall," Moore said. "They're like kids in a candy store. They cannot believe we're bringing this experience to them as gamers."

1 there has been major problems glitches with the 360, they continue to launch world wide only spreading the problem even farther. They should of dealt with the US release and deal with the system itself before going world wide. Btw those who keep acting like Americans should support american product, just stop with it. Your ignorance is bless when in we have the right to choose it's are giving free will which was why we live in US in first place. Japan is unfornately has a different prospective but atleast they choose to do what they want instead of forcing others to go political on a gaming business. As they say "seperate church and state." This goes the same way gaming and politics, they are 2 different things that don't giving go together. Your American pride is totally distorted this isn't a war between Japanese and Americans no one here is dieing over a system (with guns blazing). This is battle between products and nothing more you stop with your American Pride stuff. You making other Americans inculding me look bad for having a hughest wrong view in American Pride!.

CavemanH, you say Sony hasn't owned the gaming market in terms of quality for a long time. I ask you, when have they EVER done that? The Playstation one did CG, but it missed the boat in 3D acceleration. I suppose they might have carried the torch of quality between the PS1 release and the N64 release...

I disagree with you, sean. I own both a ps2 and an xbox, and IMO the xbox's franchises are at least as good as the ps2's. I'm a huge RPG fan and just about the only RPGs I play now are xbox ones. (Morrowind, Kotor 1 and 2, Jade Empire, Fable) I like FF games, but was never impressed with MGS or GTA which are two of the best franchises for ps2. There are very few ps2 franchises that i'm interested in that you can't also get for xbox. This, combined with xbox live, is pretty much why i'm getting an xbox 360 now and thinking about a ps3 once the price drops a bit.

I personally think the best thing the Xbox 360 has to offer is its great Live capabilities. Hearing that you can actually view OTHER people's games using Gotham TV on PGR3 is really quite a breakthrough. It shows the capabilities of 360. Also, multimedia devices like the PSP and iPod connecting can't hurt. I'm not surprised the 360 is selling so well.
Other than that, without an HD TV, the graphics don't improve that much. Also, the bundles are expensive as are the games and it will take a while (maybe 3 years) for gamers to stock up on games. Better titles will prove to be the day. That HALO 2 expansion NEEDS to come out by January 2006 or you can say au revoir to the Xbox 360 holding up when the Rev and PS3 come to stores.

bigfatbaby: you make me ashamed to be american. you say 'buy american' , f-that. i would buy american except when it comes to electronics and autos our stuff is overpriced turds. on top of that, the japanese consoles have a far bigger catalog of franchises and available titles. american games stick to few genres, and that is why theyre games dont do as well. MS says its trying to compete in japan, but when its simultaneously launching a console there with a meager >10 launch titles ( with no rpg's or fighters) its hare to take them seriously. The good games from the good Japanese studios will never be as prevalent on a console that fail there. so if you want the good FF's MGS' and almost every other title, why get an xbox? oooh ooh, now a nazi fps, now a zombie fps, a mutant fps, a terrorism fps, c'mon seriously. And about MS holding systems back from gamers to create media hoopla? LAME! all the gamers that couldnt get a 360 at launch, yet saw them give away 1000s of them should just avoid 360 altogether.

Of course PS3 will beat the 360 in sales! For this reason alone: Despite the fact that the PS2 was crap, most Sony users will buy a PS3 just becuase it's another Sony product.
At least XBox did extraordinarily well without having to rely on old flames like the Playstation 2 to make some $$. Shame on Playstation and Sony for thinking that they still own the gaming market in terms of quality. They haven't for a long time.

Well i think all this shortage issue is quite normal for a product like the x360. New electronics of this complexity are difficult to manufacture, which means that if the demand for the product is high, there'll be shortages (look what happened with the ps2 launch). Moreover, attempts for satisfying the demand in a rush, given the production limits, will end with a lot of defective products (again look at what happened with the ps2 launch). So microsoft is just going slowly but firmly.
About the patriotism of consumers in Japan Bigfatbaby was talking about, the failure of the xbox there wasn't due to that, the proof is that the xbox had a moment where it sold better than the gc there. the problem with the xbox is the games. The kind of games japanese gamers like are mostly found on the ps2 and the gc, not on the xbox. The pillars of xbox games are american taste oriented, like fps, which japanese gamers don't like that much, even though Halo opened that market a bit more with it's success in asia. The only xbox exclusive games that can be really desirable for the japanese market are the Team Ninja ones, and that's not enough. For example, good rpg's are almost nonexistent on the xbox, and that's the kind of games people look for in Japan.
Personally I have no problem with the current xbox, but there are just about 3 or 4 xbox exclusive games that I like, and i'm not gonna buy a console just for that. For now i'm gonna wait until at least the ps3 is on the market, and see how the horizon of the consoles looks then.

the reason many of you american did not get one was because of ebay **** going into walmart target etc. buy 4 or 5 even 12 of them + selling them for a profit and they will do it when ps3 arive check ebay and you will see pic of them and tthat another reason why you could not get a xbox 360

Some of you are major drama queens (looks at back_2_basic and Kravyn 81). They're only video games after all, and you will be able to get one eventually. Did you all cry as much when the Playstation 2 released in limited quantities and had problems? Do you even remember how hard it was to find a PS2 around the holidays when it launched? Did you show the same sentiment as Sony "eating their own" when disc read errors plagued the Japanese launch? How about all the problems with the PSP? These things happen and there's absolutely no point in **** about it. Microsoft is trying to remedy whatever problems there are, and they are trying to do it as fast as possible. Is it an unfortunate circumstance? Yes, I won't contend that. Is it the end of the world or even remotely that important? I can't fathom anybody saying yes to that but perhaps you'll amuse me.
Honestly, what's the difference of getting a 360 today or two weeks or two months from now? The only differences I can think of is that you'll get a system that may have the bugs worked out of it and hopefully a larger lineup of games.
In case you didn't notice, there are some European Xbox fans who want the 360 and appreciate not being left until last as usual.
You people talk as if this is the end of the world and your gaming lives are going to be forever tainted by the experience. Oh, and you're kidding yourself if you think the Playstation 3 launch will go off without a hitch, but go ahead and set yourself up for disappointment.

I admire Microsoft for 2 things here. 1) shipping the Xbox360 around the world cause I have family and Europe and we play on Xbox live. and 2) For having a Pair and trying to create success in Japan, where we all know Americans get the shaft while you Politically Correct Sony fanboys just hog up their products. You see Microsoft its just trying to prove that they can produce and sell a better product worldwide (Japan especially) if they are given a fair chance. Which we all know that its not going to happen, cause in Japan its not about getting a better product, its about getting a Japanese product and supporting it on a patriotic and political scale.(you dont believe me? Visit Japan for a few weeks then get back to me) And then you guys have the nerve to whine about Microsoft not addresing us in the Great USA ( proud to be American) completely first. But your short term memories has also made you forget that your Precious people at Sony, who release their products to the Japanese market months before we get it and last I checked Sony has its greatest success in the good old US of A. But you think Sony's worried? Why should they be? They have all you guys in their back pocket. My 2 cents, 'Nuff Said!

Thank you, Wraith, even though I'm American and dang proud of it, even I think that some of these guys were beginning to sound like a baby with candy taken from it. Seriously, so what if you need to wait a few weeks? If they're serious about pumping out those numbers of systems, you all should happily have the consoles in hand by xmas, so please stop whining already! Microsoft has more than a few high IQ's under it's belt, and if there is really any 'engineered' shortage, I can't really imagine them just turning down production. No, if it is engineered, then the units are sitting in a warehouse somewhere, and the moment MS feels that a shortage is counter-productive we'll see those units on our shelves. Really, I'd like to see some sales figures before we start talking about bombing sales in other countries; seriously, if it does sell even moderately well, not necessarily even a sell-out, in Japan, I want a formal apology from you guys, as increasing Microsoft's marketshare o'er there can only mean good things for the rest of us--the more asian gamers, the more developers that will consider going partially, or even completely x360. As an interesting side note, this move does also force Sony to go for a global lauch, or risk losing the rest of the world to the 360. And considering that we haven't even seen a finished ps3 or heard a lot of concrete details on specs last i heard from Sony, I really wonder if they'll be able to logistically support a global launch. And before you go labeling me as a MS whore, know that I have every generation of nintendo game system from the SNES to the 'cube and GBA in addition to my xbox, and I enjoy playing PS2 games with my friends who own the system. And my business views come from selling all of the 'current' gen consoles and portables as a former Best Buy employee.

I hardly consider the 360 to be a world wide launch with the massive amount of shortages. All M$ did was take the usual number that they'd ship to the first region of the world they chose to ship to first and spread it through out the whole world. All the hype has got people flipping out, only to be dissapointed by extemes shortages. If anything I can see more current gen (or last gen i guess it is now?) systems being sold. With xbox's at roughtly $180, PS2's at $130 and Gamecubes at $99 general gamers may think about getting one of those to add to their collection before they look at the 360. Here in Canada the 360 is $499+tax, and after you add a couple games, maybe an extra controller to play with a friend it's going to cost around $750 and thats if you can get your hands on one. People will just to decide not to bother going through the hassle and just pick up a few good game for their current systems. Oh! on a personal note, I believe that Peter Moore is a complete tool, Microsoft made a huge mistake bringing that guy on board to represent in part, the 360.

Theres a shortage because hes goin worldwide in 3 weeks, its called fairness, didnt hear u yanks bit**in 4yrs ago when u all got your hands on the box first.
Personally, being in the UK, im happy that some of your 360s r coming this way next week instead of 3-4 months like we usually have to wait, Sony being a huge culprit, i mean, why the hell shld i wait 3-4 months for a console when some jap lads been playin it for the same period and prob laughing at us brits while we wait in the cold.
I find it amusing how your all moanin bout shortages, even tho the blokes sayin there gunna ship every week YES EVERY WEEK. Bout 7yrs ago we waited for the ps2. That was chaos! for mnths there were no ps2s but to make things worse we had allrdy waited 4mnths for it to be launched in the uk after jap and u lot, it was so bad people were selling there pre-ordered ps2s for thousands even tho they paid like 300.
Is that why ur all so upset? Coz its american and u shld have it all to yourselfs first? Like the JAPS HAVE DONE FOR YEARS!!!
Well heres to u bill, instead of sellfishly thinkin of your own people u put some aside for the rest of the world and bring happiness in 1 week instead of miserable months of waiting wotchin the rest of the world havin fun.
Your moaning about the graphics and power blah blah blah, tell u wot, for a 4 yr old machine the box plays far cry, doom3 and half life 2 pritty damn well and if the 360 can play a pc game in 4 yrs time ill be pritty chuffed 9.5 not enuf?? funny that seein as most of the games at mo r about 4.5-5 on the drive, anything else u need sir?? then download the extra content we put on our lovely gamer place to be, Xbox live.
Now im no fan of microsoft, and i think dos shld make a come back lol i got all the consoles from mega drive through to a game cube plus a monster pc, but for some reason the 360s got me all excited, the package the power the emense backing it has and the thing that will sway many, Xbox live.
Moan all u want, but if my pre-ordered box aint in the shop next week then im sure it wont take 4 mnths like the ps2 to get some more.

This guy is going to eat his words you can see the worry in there heads, they have nothing to back anything up. if you are a 360 fan boy you can only say what, that its out now but when you look at it nobody is maveling at the dvd drive of the 360 or the ati graphics or the cores there not braging about having a standered 5-6 years ago dvd drive are they. The hype is up yeah but thats cuz its out first but if it even seems tied lol theres a reason people are waiting trust me and its not for the sunshine. the graphics look better yeah they should its way newer in tech terms. But i now they jumped the gun with this you can see it all over. Just a lil tid bit for my real people to see what they think haw about this look at the 360 games theres a reason you can beat them so fast and that they dont have all the features its a lil thing we like to call space 9.5 is not going to cut it period.

Thank you, back_2_basic, because you reflect my own sentiments concerning this issue. I willingly cancelled my pre-order a month ago (moreso for a lack of money than anything else), but this "marketing ploy" they think is so clever is doing nothing but to royally piss off those already loyal customers they managed to snag within the last four years. I've already spent thousands of dollars on my Xbox counting games and peripherals, I don't need now to run out and buy yet ANOTHER system to spend thousands more when the Xbox I have is still a very capable machine.
All this hype they're trying to create is serving no purpose other than to piss people off, and for shame on MS by pushing off the responsibility on individual store managers to have to apologize on MS's behalf because they're approaching this launch ass backwards. There's nothing clever or cute about purposely creating an artificial demand for a product when the demand has already been there for months. I would hate to be the guy that reserved this thing six months ago only to turned away and disappointed because MS is cockteasing the very fans that brought them to the position they are today by making another product instead of ignoring the first Xbox and having it bomb. Way to treat loyal customers, MS, just piss on your home market but bend over backwards again for a foreign one and get another kick in the teeth.

I 100% agree legion, a worldwide (basically) launch within in 3 weeks is freakin ridiculous.
They could have done it normally and wound up even better, just like the PSP in Europe. It launches 5 months(?) after the US launch and it sells amazingly...

Seriously, I hate Microsoft even more now. I work at GameStop and it's amazing how incredibly pissed some people are who preordered it and were told that they had to wait longer now, even though they were guaranteed it the day it came out. And for what? Marketing? I'm sorry M$, all you're doing is slowing down the rate at which you could be selling systems, and pissing a lot of people off.
My advice, wait anyways. Sure pretty graphics seem amazing to you console gamers, but as soon as you own one of these and play your games for a few hours, you'll barely notice it anymore, and it'll all be about the games. And the only spectacularly rated games so far are Perfect Dark Zero and PGR3.
Please God let this not take take away from Sony's success in America because of people's thoughtless attraction to slightly prettier graphics. Same goes for Nintendo's already lacking success.

"If you don't know your past, you don't know your future".
Were the lessons of yesterday even heeded? Granted, the X-Box didn't launch in Japan and Europe, but it failed miserably in those countries. North America carried the first generation X-Box, but now those same patrons are rewarded with what? Long lines in freezing weather, shortages, and more importantly, retailers who were promised a certain number of units not even being able to fill the pre-orders that some customers placed months ago. Way to go Microsoft. Its always nice when you eat your own.
And 9,000 to Mountain Dew for those who swill countless sodas while peering under bottletops?
Heres an idea not meant as an ethnocentric statement. How about launching in America, and looking after the same customers who five years ago saved your struggling project? I wanted an X-Box 360, but I don't have one. Now my initial excitement has turned to ambivalence. If I don't find one by Christmas, Microsoft will have lost a loyal customer. Short sighted strategy, in my opinion. I hope for Microsoft's sake that the "kids in the candystore" of other nations will carry their hopes while those who put them in the position they are today do without, and resolve themselves to wait for the Playstation 3. And its not just the consumers they are alienating, its some major retailers as well, who are left to apologize to their customers on Microsofts' behalf, and make excuses as to why they didn't receive their units as promised.
Foolish. Sony doesn't even have to hurry with the PS3. See, with the PS2 still with the controlling market share, and watching Moore (see: history of failure) make asinine statements, they know the value of not eating their own.
Heres a suggestion, Microsoft. Now that you've taken all your pictures of people standing in line due to the massive "shortages" and gotten your initial media exposure of said, get X-Box 360's underneath the Christmas trees of all who want one ASAP. Or here is one customer who will not spend another dollar on your product.
