Report: Half of gamers waiting for PlayStation 3

Nielsen Entertainment study says nearly 50 percent of "active gamers" won't get a next-generation console until they have a choice.

Unless you just emerged from a seven-month trek across the untamed jungles of western Botswana, you probably know that today, the Xbox 360 went on sale across North America. But although sellouts are already being reported and long lines are de rigueur, a leading entertainment industry group is saying that interest in the console isn't at the frenzied levels Microsoft is portraying it as.

Nielsen Entertainment, the media-research firm most famous for its television ratings, today released a survey of 2,000 "active gamers," or those who own a console and play games for at least one hour per week. Appropriately titled "Benchmarking the Active Gamer," the study said that around half of active gamers were taking a "wait and see" approach to the next-gen console contest.

"Many active gamers appear to be in a holding pattern before making a purchase decision on next-generation consoles," read a summary of the report released by Nielsen. "Nearly 50 percent of active gamers stated they will likely wait until both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are released before making a final decision."

Though purchasers of multiple platforms may object to the study's either/or line of questioning, they will likely find some of its other findings interesting. For instance, Nielsen found that owners of a current-generation Xbox were more likely to buy an Xbox 360 than PlayStation 2 owners were to buy a PS3.

However, for the most part, "Benchmarking the Active Gamer" had no major revelations about the gamer mindset. It said active gamers spend 25 percent of their leisure time gaming, averaging around 12 hours per week gaming. It also came to the not-so-shocking conclusion that the vast majority--76 percent--of online console gamers, massively multiplayer gamers, and online gambling gamers are male and that males aged 25 to 34 spend the most money on games.

In terms of the games themselves, Nielsen found that "traditional sports" is the number-one game genre, followed by first-person shooters and role-playing games.

I'ma wait for PS3....why,CUZ ITS REALLY NEXT GEN!!!!! Xbox 360 is nothing more than a PC shaped to look like a console. Take a look at the spec sheets and do some research! Developer's are already complaining about the DVD 9's thier running out of space, Allards like then cut the corners of the games......Blu-Ray=54 gig's. I dont know about you guyz but if I'ma b payin 60 or more for a game it had better be a long and meaty game with high replay value. And look at that cell processor....it's the size of your frikin finger nail,I'm very curious about it's power and all that jazz Sony say's about it.Oh bluetooth built in WI-FI,dual screen support memory card slots.....do I even need to go on?

thekey - you paid $400 (or more) for the 360 (if you were smart and did not buy the core bundle). So far, that APPEARS to be the price for the PS3 ($400). Hey, even if the PS3 was $500 it comes with the wireless network adapter built in. The 360 wireless network adapter will cost you another $100 ($100+$400 =$500). So really you need the PS3 to cost $500 to get the same deal.

Ever since I purchased Guild Wars I have no problem waiting for PS3. I hope PS3 will have the same calibur of MMORPGs.

The 360 appears to be all hype. Even though future games will have better graphics, I believe the PS3 will still trump the 360. Microsoft failed to have even one high quality game at launch. (No, COD is not high quality) I hope Sony does not do the same thing. Even if it does, with their SUPER DUPER POWERS OF BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY there will be plenty of new PS2 games to play, like FFXII.

I will miss out on Halo 3 but, I can wait 3 years for halo 4 and buy the 360 for $150-$200 if necessary. MS will probally have another system by then. Maybe that will be worth the money.

Xbox 360 isn't as good as we expected, so perhaps the people is just waiting until the PS3 is released in order to compare them and see the best of the PS3

Well, my friend Simechak, I would like to commend your bravery on the topic of including the Revolution, but I am afraid Nintendo is really getting what they deserve. Now, the revolution no doubt will be quite awesome with all of their backward compatibility and all, but the problem is the Gamecube. The gamecube ruined the future of the nintendo releases. Don't get me wrong though, Nintendo still has a fighting chance to win this "console war", and come out swinging, but the only reason they are doing so poorly on the charts my friend, is because, no one cares. Nintendo really screwed up another time by being so hush-hush on the Revolution specs. They are really hurting themselves by not releasing the information gamers really want, like technical specs. They want to see the graphical horsepower of this next machine, what kind of goodies are going to be packed on it. If the gamecube hadn't completely been a total abomniation, then I would be more willing to believe that the Revolution would've been included in this research topic. Now to the article of the hour, I have to say, I am not the least bit surprised with the Gamer's decision to remain indecisive 'til the launch of the acclaimed playstation 3. With the lack luster launch, and high price of the Xbox-360, I am not surprised with this decision. Gamers were already disappointed weeks before the launch of the 360 by news of the push back of Elderscrolls IV, and other great launch titles, leaving them only able to look forward to games they could've purchased long before on current consoles. Now, people want to see some comptetion for this "powerhouse" the xbox 360 is, but personally, I don't see a real difference between the xbox and the 360. Personally, I Want to see as well what the playstation 3 has to offer, and I think that's the way these active gamers are swaying too. This is truly a display of failure for Microsoft, if it is true that fifty percent of gamers are remaining indecisive.

Some of you, talk about the controller, who cares, wouldn't you buy one GREAT console even if the controlller looks like a ham-sandwich like one Gamespot's polls said? I bet you buy it, because that doesn't really matter, as long as it is comfortable, and even if it isn't, believe me, your hands will get used to it... so don't flame Sony or Nintendo for their controllers, hell, nobody is saying nothing about the N64 "trident" controller, and still the analog stick became a standard...

I don't think there is much of a difference between the capability as far as games go for Xbox 360 and PS3. Xbox 360 is going to have Resident Evil 5 and so is PS3, Xbox 360 will also have Gears of War which is amazing looking. By the beginning of 2006 great and amazing looking games will be out for Xbox 360 and the only reason they don't look that good now is because the actual next-gen games are still in developement. this would indicate to me that they will both have similar capabilities to play great looking games. It all comes down to a matter of preference on whether you like Sony or Microsoft and what games catch your eyes. Don't judge the Xbox 360 by it's current games even though i must say they look very good, even better than any Xbox game.

You know...All I'm hearing is how the XBox 360 is so great. Yet, I've not heard what makes it so great. Oh wow...It'll have Halo 3. But, really...Is one game really enough to have people buy the new machine? Given the facts, Sony has many 3rd party companies, that are quite well known for some of their games. How many are known through Microsoft?

Personally, I've not seen anything note worthy (yet) on the XBox 360, that would drive me to shell out some serious green on such a machine, that honestly, to me is just another form of a PC..Less powerful, than a PC, but a PC nonetheless. Furthermore, what alot of people seem to be neglecting is the amount of effort, and time being given to the PlayStation 3. Going so far as to use new inventions, (the Cell Processor., and the RSX GPU)...At least in my mind, that tells me that they really put alot of manpower, and effort, into this beast of a machine. What does that entail? It means that they have my vote. I am definitely waiting for the end result, of what is to become the PlayStation 3.

?!?! Are you telling me that there are people who are giving 3000 dollars for a xbox 360?!?!?!?
    Are they mad?!?!?!
I must say its the most stupid thing i've heard in a long time!
I would NEVER give that kind of money for a console! NEVER! Maybe because i have to WORK to buy things! Leaving the stupid ideas to stupid people i must say that i'm going to wait until the ps3 launch. I never had a xbox and i will never will. For 3 reasons. First Microsoft, second bill gates, third the games. I'm a playstation fan. And i agree with some things i've read from you guys. In the end is the type of games that define the console you choose. Since i'm portuguese the ps3 launch will be probably in the end of 2006 in europe and yes i will wait. ps2 have still much to give to gamers and the marketing ideas of microsoft are to abusive for my taste. My girlfriend works in a major store in Portugal and the guys from the computers department said that xbox 360 is giving problems already. Sony is doing the right thing with the ps3 and waiting for the console to be near 100% (never is) until the launch time. But please! Buy the xbox 360 or the revolution! It's your money (or parents in any case)! And i must praise the revolution fans. I don't like the revolution type of games but if i did i would buy it!

I think it's very sad that the media biased Nintendo for thinking about a way to shake the business, as far I'm concerned they're only ones who really know where they are, Nintendo's ideas have always become standards... I'm not a FAN BOY, and in this current generation I only bought a Gamecube, but I have a PSP and I believe is a far better portable than the DS and GBA (and I own two of GBAs)... I've been around since back in the day when the first Zelda was a breakthrough and I tell you (newbies and FAN BOYS), it isn't about the hardware, is about the kind of games you want to play, if you want to see my point just take a look at Gamespot's Game of the Year award, for 2002 --> Metroid Prime and for 2003 --> Zelda Windwaker, and I bet you all, and in 2005 the odds are that RE4 will be the best game of the year (launched many months in advance to the PS2 version)... so no matter what side you take, think about the games, not companies, you can blame (if you want) Nintendo because they have a "childish" console, still RE4 doesn't look childish to me, but when push comes to shove, that's their business and it has worked for them for a very long time... Sony on the other hand had the first Next-Gen Console back in 2000, and still came up as the winner just because you can find any game imaginable (and a lot of them) on their console... and finally Microsoft had the "best" specs on their console, you can't denied, they had the best graphics and ALL you want, but that only took them to a second place, and by a HUGE margin... so it is true that sometimes the video game industry doesn't think about US (the gamers), but also WE, the gamers, are the ones that feed these events, like the Xbox 360 launch and all the ebay thing with $3000 auctions...

Dude, its totally marketing, and microsoft is just doing to consoles what they did to OS's, makeing sure lots of people use thiers instead of the other guy's. Pushing this new machine out 6 months sooner means they have a 6 month head start, which means means that in 6 months they can say we have 100% market share in the "next-gen" console market and their stock will go up another hundred bucks. Also Ps3 is being designed to have a life cycle of somthing like 10 years, i have serious doubts that Xbox 360 (aka Poopbox 1.5) is going to be around half that long. So yeah i'll wait 6 months(or more) and probibly end up paying way more for it, but it'll be worth it in 4 years from now when the PS3 is still going strong with many outstanding games and even more due to be released while microsoft is pushing the launch of Xbox 1080(or whatever they are going to call it... though it'll probibly a true "next gen" console by todays standards) and asking its hard core fans to shell out another 500+ bucks to have the newest thing... Now if only Sony could make a decent digital camera and stopped pricing thier TV's so damn high they'ed have me for life....

PS: Hats off to Nintendo for having a clear vision about the brand they want to build, and where they fit in the market. And I'll probibly buy a gamecube real soon just for the price and the fact that nothing has better 4 player action to compliment a late night of drinking with some buds, even if it is just a fat Itialian playing tennis with cartoon characters.

I'm going to wait until I get a look at the PS3 and the Revolution as well before I make any sort of purchase decision. But truth be told I an leaning toward getting a PS3 and a Revolution. The 360 just does not seem like it will have the sort of games I like to play. I think unless MS throws huge piles of money at the Japanese developers they will abandon the system once they see how poorly it is doing in Japan. If that happens it would pretty much leave the 360 with generic EA mainstream garbage and Halo. Not really my thing at all.

Heh, but my crystal ball is likely in desperate need of adjustment, so I'm going to wait and see.

Have anyone of you played 360. The graphics and games look no better that Xbox. Buy yourself a Xbox, there is plenty more interresting games right now (unless you want to sho off your friends "Hey look I got the last gen console. I know all the games aren't original or impressive for the moment but hey! I still got the last gen...")

I still play on my PS2 and there are many interresting games coming in the next months. I will be very happy playing them.

Most of all who has played PS3. Because many say it sucks. I wonder how they figured that out.

Last of all I played on a 360 lately. If I'd had 500$ to spend, I'd buy myself a Xbox instead with some games and accessories. I was not impressed buy what I saw and experienced.

In a few months, the 360 games will begin to look and feel much better and we'll have a look a tthe PS3 and hopefully the Revolution.

PS is always the best and u cant match Xbox with it coz Xbox sux, PS one games r even better than Xbox 360 games, Xbox is not a next generation console for me its just a next generation crap, and u guys are talking about Xbox and its Xbox live and dont forget PS3 still has about 6 months or even more for it to be released and they can make it better, plus they already announced that its going to have a great online it could also be better than Xbox live and all the other specs are just better, also dont forget about the games guys Metal Gear Solid 4 is going to rock, Final Fantasy is going to be excellent, Devil May Cry is going to rule and their are lots of great games, so guys I am telling u to get the PS3 and I heard that its going to be less than 400 dollars so we will be so lucky for it and its going to come with media bundle. Blue-Ray is going to be the best. Hope u all would have fun while playing the PS3

why go for xbox 360? i mean cmon get real guys almost all of the pc games are ported to xbox and vice-vrsa but still the PC is the winner when it comes to games mainly in FPS , RTS, and MMORPG genre why go for the X360 controller pad and play FPS while you have keyboard and mouse,

PS3 will deffinetly be the winner in the console wars especially the huge game developers that supports the console and of course the huge collection of great games that only the PS2 can have..

for PS3 ken kutaragi said that the PS3 will be expensive and because of that im starting save some cash just to buy one next 2006 im a avid fan of MGS, and Rpg's like Final Fantasy, survival horror games like RE, Silent Hill. etc. x360 dont have the huge and great games except for halo and others too few to mention but thats the truth behind it. so ill go for the PS3!!

Mordamir and tonyf55 you guys are very right! You all should wait cause XBOX360 price will drop and it might even go bad with the money lose they have taking a hit of about 160.00 per system. XBOX360 was and is all about hype and really is just an upgrade, just look at the games and graphics. My PC is way better than an XBOX360 basically more next gen lol. PS3 shows games in realtime not cinema REALTIME! meaning those graphics are ran on the PS3 chip and the RX something video card which is more powerful than 2 asus 7800 gtx oc SLI like what I have. But do you reading and research cause it counts and not just going out buying a system not worths it's money. And yes XBOX360 RULES! on the online gameplay but that's all what sony really needs to work on and for the REVOLUTION, just for kids and girls or just for people who like those kinds of games, there is no HD and graphics are really changed but it's parts are somewhat next gen for example the controller and nanchaku.

The Xbox 360 for xbox live and the PS3 for MGS4. All depends on your perfrences on gaming in general. If you like the intensity of online multiplayer xbox 360 xbox live. Or if you like franchises like MGS or DMC then PS3.

People that have a X-box already, probably have enough games to keep them busy for the next year also. I don't know what the big hype with the X-box 360 is all about? Y'all can waste your money on the 360 now, but it's better to wait and have choices, anyway by the time the PS3 is out, Microsoft will have Halo 3 out... and you'll have to decide between "waiting for the good games" like some of you are saying now, or getting tha Xbox to play Halo 3... don't you see that the 360 is just about graphics, is more like an upgrade, not really NEXT-GEN...
