WWE, video game superstar "Eddie" Guerrero found dead

Pro-wrestling champ passes away while on tour in Minneapolis; Guerrero lives on in latest in long string of WWE-licensed games, due to retailers this week.

WWE superstar Eduardo Gory Guerrero, better known on the canvas as "Eddie" Guerrero, was found dead Sunday morning in his hotel room in Minneapolis.

Guerrero, a former WWE champion and a regular mainstay of UPN's Friday Night Smackdown, was in town to compete in a championship match for a taped WWE Supershow, slated to air later this week. Guerrero has had a presence in the game world as well, with his likeness appearing in both WCW- and WWE-licensed games from publisher THQ since the late 1990s. He was 38.

After failing to respond to a 7:00 a.m. wake-up call, hotel security at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center sought the help of Guerrero's nephew and fellow WWE performer, Chavo Guerrero Jr., in trying to establish contact. Following a series of unsuccessful phone calls and knocks on his hotel room door, they finally forced their way into the room, only to find Eddie's body on the floor.

Upon initial investigation, police stated that there were no apparent signs of foul play. An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of Guerrero's death.

In the past, it had been well documented that Guerrero fought numerous battles with alcoholism and drug abuse, both of which nearly cost him his career and his family. However, in a recent press conference held by WWE chairman Vince McMahon, Chavo told reporters that Guerrero found faith in Christianity, and he has been sober for the past four years.

"This is a huge loss to the WWE," a somber McMahon said. "Eddie Guerrero was one of the stellar performers in the history of our business." He added that "he will be so missed by WWE fans. There is only one Eddie Guerrero."

When asked whether or not anything will be done to commemorate Guerrero's life and legacy, McMahon stated that the Sunday night tapings for its two flagship television programs, Monday Night Raw and Friday Night Smackdown, will be altered in format and turned into tribute shows to pay honor to the wrestler.

"Eddie Guerrero, being the consummate performer that he is would want the show to go on. You are going to see these human beings, really not so much as performers, but as friends of Eddie Guerrero who want to say something about and to Eddie," McMahon said.

Chavo added, "If it's a tribute show to Eddie, then I'd want to be a part of it and I know he'd want me to be a part of it also."

Whether it was by his fans around the world, or by his colleagues in the locker room, Eddie Guerrero was equally loved and respected for his infectious personality and passion for the business. Despite his occasional bouts as an onscreen "heel" (villain) on WWE programming, crowd chants of "Eddie, Eddie, Eddie," were constantly heard in almost every town he went to.

While Guerrero's unexpected passing is a loss to the world of sports entertainment, his legacy continues in many forms. Fans can continue to celebrate Guerrero's storied career by watching his nephew, Chavo, on TV, and they can show their support by wearing Guerrero's merchandise to live events. They can even play as Guerrero himself in WWE's long line of video games--the latest of which, WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2006, will be released later this week.

Eduardo "Eddie" Guerrero is survived by his wife Vickie and three daughters: Shaul, 14, Sherilyn, 9, and Kaylie Marie, 3.

    A true legend who didn't just came out the ring to wrestle but to entartain the fans in every way possible. He 'lied' 'cheated' and 'stealed' but only to entartain the fan. He was one of the best champion, friend and entertainer of the all time in the wrestling history......We will miss you eddie and especially the smile that you used to have in your face.....

    I have been a wwe fan my whole life and i only had RAW, but i would on occasion watch smackdown wen i had the chance and eddie was a true comic and champ. the cheat thing he would do with the chair had me laffing for hours. My reguards and best wishes to chavo, vickie and the rest of the guerrero family. Eddie was a champ, a comic, and a true wwe legend. wwe has lost one of its finest.

    I am going to miss Eddie. He was the best and will always be the best. Whether you loved him or hated him, you respected him. One of the reasons i am a huge fan of him is that he also helped out my cousin. When he heard that Eddie gave up drugs and alcohol, so did my cousin. He saved my cousins life and its to bad that he had to die so early in his life. Something many people don't think about is that he was only 38. He was so young. My respects go to Eddie and his family. R.I.P. Eddie. We will all miss you. VIVA LA RAZA!

    Eddie Guerrero was one of the best wrestlers on SmackDown. When he and Chavo had those "Lie, Cheat and Steal" promos, I damn near laugh my head off everytime I think of them.

    I still have some old tapes of Eddie's matches. I just wished I had the tribute shows on Raw and SmackDown, but what I have is enough to keep the memories of a well-loved superstar.

    Bye, Eddie. I'm gonna miss his music, entrance and the way he made the fans happy. May you rest in peace.

    Eddie Guerrero... He was the COOLEST... FAVOURITEST... and the BEST guy there ever was in sports entertament. I was so in shock when i heard that Eddie was dead, i was so MAD and SAD of Eddies death that i didnt no what to do
    I so waited to meat Eddie in person but i never had the chans to do that and i ges that day will never come. But i will never forget the LATINO HEAT Eddie gurrearo. i will always love the words when Eddie sed VIVA LA RAZA that makes the people happy. We always will remember the greath Eddie Guerrero and he will alweas be in our hearts, we will miss you Eddie

    I actually had a chance to meet Eddie in person, when he was eating dinner after a house show... He is one of the nicest guys I have ever talked to. I love you Eddie Guerrero... VIVA LA RAZA!!!!!

    WAAAAAAAA! Eddie was like one of my fave WWE Wrestlers, and I can't believe he died. Waaa! I seriously was almost in tears when I found out he'd passed away. Its awesome that rey won the royal rumble and deddicated his victory to eddie, thank GODS! *crys* eddie, you will be missed

    he died from a heart disease... check the msnbc and look for the story (to lazy to go back for the link :p) yeah thats how he died. Them to much steroids and body building just is to much for your heart. Yes, your heart gets to big when you work out stressing your whole body. Since the heart gets big the vessels tend to get smaller causing the flow of blood to pass little by little to your (brain mainly) and die. Farewell eddie, im mexican myself and I can't believe he dead either! Viva la raza!!!

    what can i say i mean i'm so sad eddie was the best wrestler on the time there's only ONE latino heat and thats eddie although he is gone now he will ALWAYS be in our hearts. ALWAYS i will never forget him so R.I.P eddie we miss you already.

    I dreaming about meeting him in person but i can't, because im far away from america, im just hoping that someday I'm gonna meet Eddie, but now... his dead...
    Then my hope and dreams just shattered like a glass. My Eddie that I use to be idolized has just past away and there is no way that im gonna meet him face to face, eye to eye.

    But still Eddie is in our mind and heart we shall not forget Eddie Guerrero a man that ...lie, cheat, and steal...
