PSP gets more movies, cheap games in Japan
Sony launches new movie-download service in Japan, and 12 games get price-slashed PSP the Best brand.
TOKYO--In Japan, Sony has taken two initiatives that should please owners of the PSP. The company has launched a new movie-distribution site named Moviesquare, which offers downloadable flicks for purchase. Though the site is primarily targeted at PC users, it also offers more than 260 movies for the PSP. Movies available for the PSP are priced from 210 yen ($1.78) to 1,260 yen ($10.71) depending on the feature.
Moviesquare will be the second site by Sony that officially distributes movie files for the PSP. The company also launched a site dedicated to PSP movies called Portable TV in late July. Even though Portable TV has a head start on Moviesquare, the latter already has more movies.
Sony also has something for PSP owners who use their handheld for gaming. Though Konami was first to announce a budget-priced reissue of a PSP game at this year's Tokyo Game Show, a slew of other titles are headed to the handheld at new affordable prices. In Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment announced it will release 13 PSP games under the new PSP the Best brand, akin to the PlayStation 2's Greatest Hits series. The titles are mostly games from last year, but they're priced at 2,800 yen ($24), nearly half of their official catalogue price of 4,800 yen ($41). Metal Gear Acid is priced a bit lower from the rest, at 2,100 yen ($18).
The list of announced titles is as follows:
(Release Date, Title, Publisher)
11/17- Armored Core: Formula Front International, From Software
11/17- Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower, Capcom
