Star Wars Galaxies commits seppuku in Japan
EA Japan to discontinue service of the LucasArts game; problematic sci-fi MMORPG to continue in US, Europe.
While American fans of the PC massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Wars Galaxies eagerly await tomorrow's release of the game's next expansion pack, Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi-Wan, SWG players in a region far, far away are feeling a disturbance in The Force.
On its Web site, Electronic Arts Japan, the game's Japanese publisher, is reporting that it is discontinuing its support for Star Wars Galaxies in the country. Apparently, Japanese gamers who wish to continue on will have their accounts transferred to American or European servers, which remain unaffected.
This isn't the first time the Sony Online Entertainment game has disappointed fans. In addition to bringing the ire of several (perhaps overzealous) fans over support issues, uproar over a recent update nearly started an online boycott of the game. The issue was eventually resolved, with SOE scrapping the planned update.
