PS3 to run at 120 fps?

It's possible, says Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi; all that's needed is a TV capable of displaying it.

Coming soon to an Internet message board near you: waves of more-hardcore-than-thou posters referring to any game running at 60 frames per second (fps) as "a slideshow."

Appearing at the Tokyo International Digital Conference on Thursday to talk about the technological capabilities of the PlayStation 3 and the Cell processor, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi said he expects the PS3 to be capable of running games at a stunning 120fps, according to a report in The Nikkei BP.

Never mind that even newer TVs aren't capable of refreshing the screen 120 times in a single second. Kutaragi said that when new technology comes to market, he hopes to have the PS3 ready to take advantage of it.

As for the Cell chip at the heart of the PS3, Kutaragi also had high hopes for its future beyond gaming. Using high-definition TV as an example, he said that the Cell chip could take advantage of the technology in many ways, such as displaying newspapers in their actual size, showing multiple high-definition channels on the screen at once, and video conferencing. He emphasized that the Cell can be used to decode more than 10 HDTV channels simultaneously, and it can also be used to apply effects such as rotating and zooming.

Later, he introduced the idea of a Cell cluster server that operates with 16 units, each consisting of eight Cell chips running at 2.5Ghz. That would be a total processing power of 25.6 teraflops. Kutaragi also outlined plans to shrink the chip from the current 90-nanometer process to a 65-nanometer process in the future and eventually down to a 45-nanometer process.

    That is funny
    The ps3 is barely capable to run games at 30-25fps(at resolutions 1280x720 - 1024x600).

    They're always looking too deep into the future. PS3 is now, not 5 years in the future. We see that multiplataform games can barely run at a steady 60 fps and sometimes they solw down to less than 30 fps. They need to think more of the PS3 now.

    lol he said the ps3 can run games at 120 fps but he doesn't talk about game graphic if somebody waiting from ps3 too run all games at 120 fps whit graphic like killzone2 or uncharted visit a Doctor

    Xbox 360 games are always better than their Playstation 3 counterparts. We now know that Ken Kutaragi was telling another one of his lies, just like he did with the Playstation 2 when he said the PS2 would have graphics similar to the Disney movie Toy Story.

    Xbox 360 has won the graphics comparison on Gamespot 3 Years in a row (2006, 07,08).

    Lol this is just stupid promissing 120fps for games you will be lucky if all games run at constant 30 ofcourse they could make games at 120fps with ps2 like graphics.

    Confirmation of what we knew all along, the PS3 is by far the most powerful console on earth, and a true next gen console. The 360 is actually last gen as its main rival/competition was the PS2 for 2 years. The 360 GPU has a lot going for it but the rest is S%&T. Killzone 2/ MGS4 on the 360 haha, dont make me laugh. GOW2 on the PS3 may not happen due to contractual obligations, but technically would work no probs and be better too. A blu ray SE version could come out on ps3 with GOW and GOW2.

    Love old news as well, and 60fps is no slideshow no matter who you are, the human eye doesn't notice anything over 60, though it may have an overly smooth effect. But a slideshow ROFL the people who posted that in a forum should be....

    human eye doesn't notice any difference higher then 70 frames per second, but you shoot a lot faster if you have more frames. i can shoot on PC twice faster then on 360 cause i have 670 frames and 360 has 60 thats sad

    the ps3 was suppposed to have 2 Cell Processors, thats why he said 120 fps

    The Hardware hasn't been NEARLY tapped into for the PS3, so there is no doubt in my mind that it is only gunna get better and better. So far the exclusives that i have seen for myself (and played) are far better, in Frames Per Second, and overall crispness (in just 720p) then anything the 360 can struggle to push out. The only games that suffer from bad fps's and muddy graphics are the multiplatform ports that were developed on the 360 first. Its good to know that 3rd party developers are starting to "develop" for the PS3 first nowadays.

    In my mind and in the back of many others, the Xbox 360 hit its peak last year, last horay if you will. Dont get me wrong i loved the titles, but the hardware just cant keep up with what is going to be developed in the years to come, being that the PS3 was built to last for 10 years in the vein of product development.

    Getting back to the article, I do very much believe that the PS3 can do things that are beyond this generation. Cell Chip can do 10 HDTV channels simultaneously is what they believed in 2005, 120fps in 2005. They knew what they were investing in from day one knowing the true potential of New Next Gen entertainment unit, hmm Blue-ray games over DVD. Blue-ray ftw!. And last but not least, there is NO WAY that Killzone 2 will ever run on the 360 unless it was dumbed down like crazy, same goes for MGS4, to much on the Blue-ray discs to make a comparable port. RIP 360!!!

    lol...i cant believe ur hopin more ps3 exclusives would come onto 360,thats like getting gears of war onto ps3 lol (which is not possible)...the only way u could try to do that is to buy a xbox360 and a ps3...and that just solves the problem...plz dont just be an annoyin fanboy lol,im just here for the games

    ummm sry but on my killzone 1 case it has sony's logo right on it sooo...
    there will defl be no killzone 2 for 360.
    as for mgs4 probly not but maybe mgs4 subsistence will

    ur crazy man. killzone 2 or mgs 4 will come to the 360?? wat ur insane that will never happen and besides at this point, a lot of ppl have a fair amount of ps3's already and all over my place, there is talk that everybody wants to get the 40 gigger on christmas so by the time Haze and UT3 come out to the ps3, there will alrdy be a pretty good fanbase. killzone2 and mgs 4 will sell i 100% guarantee u that.

    this article is so bs...well hell it took 3 years for the 360 to get at 60 fps and 1 year for the ps3 but there still is a chance for 120 fps...a small chance

    Even though we can't see 120fps, When frames drop you wont see them. Right now people complain about dropped frames on the ps3. WIth this even when it happens you wont notice. So for people saying that 120fps looks like 60, when it drops from 120fps to 80 or even 60 its still gonna look the same.

    I'm sorry but who really cares about fps as long as it isn't below 60? all I care about is the resolution. I'm not putting down the ps3 here either considering a 360 doesn't really have any 1080p games/

    I love my PS3 and I love my PC but if you want to see 120fps just download a demo and see for yourself. It looks basically the same as 60 fps.

    So true. So when Halo at 30 FPS looks great . And Madden on the PS3 at 30fps looks great. Becuase its at a higher def. Who cares right. Wrong. Although it is true it dont matter. When the 360 whinny boys get a chance to jump on some BS number like the EA football numbers they will. When they get killed by the number as in Need for speed underground. Where they ran half the frame rate of the PS3. They will make up some BS math excuse. But I would not expect anything less with such low knowledge's fans as Microsoft ones. I swear Two halve to leave and we get a few lesson tought. And the BS still flies. How far will Microsoft have to be taken down before they stop crying and just game. Or will they end up killing themselves. Becuase if they would just stop the BS. They would not have guys all of a sudden leaving because of whats about to happen. Becuase it would not be about to happen. God all they got to do is act human and get in line with the other 2. And they would be fin. But no, they cant shut up with BS! And their fans cant either.

    Still, 30 - 60 is a far cry from 120. And you can tell the difference if there is an FPS counter and when the FPS drops from very high to high. When playing WoW, you *can* tell when the FPS drops from 80 to 60.

    And as far as the Cell being able to simultaneously decode 10 HDTV channels by what I'm seeing the system do now.....BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Maybe if it were in a piece of dedicated hardware, but there is no way in Helsinki it can do it on a PS3.

    Obviously Sony has decided to meet the desires of even the wildest gamers... Even if that is only Street Fighter at 120fps lol... ;p I love how Sony concocts nonsense to try to sell products, when they know good and well like every other bit of nonsense they have said it wont happen, and if it does, it will be rigged in some way. Take for example of the finally to come PS1 for PSP games... You need a PS3 to take advantage of it... Once again, locking people into buying 600.00 more product to simply download a game onto their PSP that it could easily download from the same site itself.

    Sony is full of crap. They arn't going to be running games like Killzone at 120 FPS and expect everybody to have a TV that can handle that. I mean, they are having frame rate problems with alot of their games right now. How the hell are they going to hope to even run anything near 120!

    I'd point out that Resistance: Fall of Man was locked at 30 fps. That's not a judgement against the game itself, but we may wait a while before seeing 120fps at 1080p.

    The fact is that the graphics will be so smooth taht it doesn't matter if we see 120 fps. It will look awsome, and also if the frame rate drops, then we will still have an amazingly high Frame Rate!!!

    YEA i have a x1800xtpe and, even at 1920x1200 x4 aa in ut2k4 i get over 200 fps in some maps.

    Any console could do that if it was playing a crappy-looking game. go play quake 3 on ur computer; it should run at like 500 fps, but your monitor won't display it that high. Good point about the 3d glasses though. No one knows how many fps the human eye can see. This whole 120 fps thing is completely bogus as they did not tell us what exactly is running at 120 fps. If it's that Killzone 2 movie they showed at E3, i'll definitely be impressed, but if the game actually ends up looking that good, there's no way it'll average over 40 fps with the components they have in the ps3.
