Sega declares Total War on living room
The Creative Assembly makes console debut with Spartan: Total Warrior, now shipping to stores.
Earlier this year, Sega bought The Creative Assembly, developer of the popular PC Total War real-time strategy series. Coupled with the announcement of a console-exclusive, action-oriented spin-off of the series in the form of Spartan: Total Warrior, Sega's acquisition risked alienating a loyal fan base and ticking off a whole lot of PC gamers. Those withholding judgment of the deal until they see what The Creative Assembly can do with an action game won't have to wait much longer, as Spartan is now on its way to retailers nationwide for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox.
As the name of the game suggests, Spartan puts players in the role of a Spartan warrior, and all-around very bad man, who's blessed by the gods with abilities beyond mortal ken that will give him a fighting chance against Roman armies (with flamethrowers!) and mythological creatures. The Creative Assembly boasts that the game can throw more than 160 characters onscreen at once in environments ranging from a vast wasteland to the Roman Colosseum.
Spartan: Total Warrior is rated M for Mature and retails for $49.95. A review will be up later this week, but impatient types can read up on Spartan in GameSpot's latest preview.
