ICO director confirms new PS3 project

Fumito Ueda reveals plans for his next project to appear on Sony's next-gen console.

With Shadow of the Colossus' development complete, some gamers are already wondering if its creator is preparing for its next project. And this week, the question was answered by the game's director himself.

In an interview with Dengeki Playstation, director Fumito Ueda, who gained popularity with his first game, ICO, disclosed that he already has a few ideas simmering for a new game project. However, he added that none of them are far along enough conceptually to be built into a solid game like Shadow of the Colossus or ICO.

For the time being, it seems that fans of Ueda will have to wait until he comes up with an idea that he's comfortable with. Though no one knows what Ueda's next game will be, he did confirm that it will be a PlayStation 3 title.

Ueda admitted that the three years it took to make Shadow of the Colossus was a bit too long. (ICO was released in late 2001, so gamers had to wait four years until they could play his new game.) While Ueda hopes to release his next game in less time, he commented that there are still uncertain factors in developing games for the PS3.

In the portable sector, Ueda revealed he would like to make a game for the PSP. Ueda also commented that he has no interest in making games for mobile phones, even though that's the current trend of gaming in his country.

While the ICO development team is known for its games that portray a realistic world and include lifelike graphics, Ueda thinks it would be fun to create a game that goes in a different direction, such as adopting the use of cartoonish characters.

Since Fumito Ueda left Sony, I don't think we will ever see the game released. Sony says it isn't cancelled, but you have to wonder at this point.

hehe. Fumito Ueda mentioned how it took too long to make Shadow of the Colossus (3 years), but now the Last Guardian will have been in development for probably at least 4-5 years, if development started around 06',07'. He should seriously reconsider mobile phone games, since they have come incredibly far in technical power the last 5 years. An Ico like game on the iPhone or Droid would look amazing. Especially after seeing the Unreal III engine Citadel tech demo running on iPhone.

mistervengeance: so i 4th that motion to begin with. got a few things to say so hear me out guys. cartoonish games is like 'what the hell is wrong with you Ueda?'. not that cartoonish games are bad only that i'm so glad to be in this era where i got to experience something like ICO & ShadowOTC, it will be a big downfall when these games stop to happen. i so hope that they won't stop... ever. even in a 1000 years. Ueda, teach yours kids what you know and tell them to teach their kids and so on. and when you currently don't have any kids then stop making games and start making kids. i'll understand. then come back with like 3 games at once to make up for the waiting. this also goes for Hideo Kojima. now, where was i? ... looking back on ICO & SOTC, looking really closey at the characters during gameplay.... they look like they're something out of an anime comic so hopefully the 'cartoonish' he has in mind isn't that bad really! just more colorful! besides, i'm pretty confident that anything he'll do will be great. also i'd like to say this: i'm not sure i'm sure that everyone here understands that there is a connection between ICO & SOTC. am i wrong? i mean, you do know that there is a big connection between both games which gives open to the idea of making possibly another 2 games, right? anyway, mentioning that; i actually visualized and came up with an idea of what the game could of been like after what happened in ICO. imagine a co-op game....

i do have some questions now.

    1. i had read that after completing ICO you can unlock the 'weird' subtitles into english. is that true?

    2. did it ever occur to you that the word 'ICO' could be some sort of initials? i was thinking the 'C' could be Colossus!

    3. did you play the small bit after the credits of ICO?

    thanks for reading.

Well, first of all..with the two titles I've played the aspects of the story still unclear and there are many loose ends that can be completed with a great story. as for the gameplay, here arises the problem for Ueda, since the two released games had a unique and enjoying gameplay style, so the upcoming must be unique, otherwise I will lose faith in my beloved game...but still I expect that the third release to be as emotional and awesome as its two predecessors.

Cartoon style would be an interesting direction but a SotC style graphics game on the PS3 would rule and (SPOILER WARNING) seeing as Wander didnt die at the end of SotC maybe something loosely related like SotC was to ICO

lol. Some times cartoon graphics are done nicely. But not always a perfect example of suck is Wind Waker for the Gamecube. Also I would love to play another game like shadow of the colossus but with more Monsters to fight while riding around instead of just 16 enemies in total.

Ueda's games are recognised by their stunnin art direction and superb graphics. Going for something cartoonish, that too on the ps3, could spell disaster. i would want an offbeat game for the ps3 like ico or sotc.

...Ueda thinks it would be fun to create a game that goes in a different direction, such as adopting the use of cartoonish characters...

You got to be kidding me, shadow of colossus and ico had the best art direction and style and you are going.... to change it into some cartoon?

Ok... one of the main reasons that I am thinking about getting the PS3 and waiting yet not to get the Xbox360 is for the follow up in the world of Wanda and Ico, If for any reason they decide to change it to some childish and stupid cartoon I am going up the roof. Please change your direction again... and think about doing a Zelda with your artstyle and powerfull epic feel! LOL

I loved Shadows, and it was because of that game that I bought ICO. I love this man's games. They are beautiful minimalistic works of genius art. I can't wait for his next game, but the thought that he'd go for a 'cartoonish' game has me worried. I'm keeping an eye out for this one.

That's some nice news. SOTC had one of the best console graphics I have ever seen. The Fumito Ueda makes video graphic as if it was magical art peice that was in motion. Wonder how he will use the PS3's power with the style of graphic he uses. It's unimaginable.

Shadow of the Colossus was rated the #2 game of 2005, but really God of War (#1 game of 2005) is not as deep and thrilling and as wonderful as Shadow of the Colossus. The best game ever. I am now playing Ico, just got it yesterday and it's pretty amazing too! By the way, in the guide for shadow of the colossus, it says that you can hang on to dolphins but where the heck are the dolphins????
