Warner correcting Matrix Online DVD gaffe
Former publisher Ubisoft gets prominent billing in recent DVD release; reissue on the way.
Yesterday, Warner Bros. released the DVD version of The Matrix Revolutions. Included in the disc's assortment of previously unseen content is a 10-minute "featurette" that delves into the making of the upcoming The Matrix Online game due this fall. Interviews and previously unseen gameplay make up the bulk of the featurette's content.
The game, an MMORPG based on the Matrix universe, is being developed by Monolith, the folks behind Tron 2.0 and No One Lives Forever. Until recently, the game was to have been published by Ubisoft. However, the Warner/Ubisoft partnership was summarily annulled last February, which is something, it seems, that the DVD's producers may never have been informed of.
Included in the 10-minute featurette is a conversation with then-ubi.com Vice President of Development Joe Ybarra. As one staffer on the product's support team told GameSpot today, "This blows for us." Another staffer close to the project pointed out that the DVD "was in postproduction before the [Ubisoft/Warner Bros.] shakeout happened."
As it turns out, a rushed second pressing of the disc (with the Ubisoft staffer excised from the disc) is in the works. Matrix collectors who want to hold on to a bit of unintended history have been forewarned.
