Nintendo to end Famicom and Super Famicom production

Nintendo will cease manufacturing its two classic consoles.

Nintendo revealed today that it will stop manufacturing its Famicom (NES) and Super Famicom (SNES) consoles in Japan in September. Likewise, Nintendo will also stop its disk-rewriting services for the Famicom Disk System, a supplemental device released in 1986. While the Famicom Disk System is no longer manufactured, the Famicom and Super Famicom consoles have been kept in production, with the Famicom going through a model change for its 10th anniversary. The Super Famicom also went through some cosmetic changes in 1998. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the original Famicom, which was released in 1983.
