Take-Two shuttering its subsidiary's Manhattan operation, reportedly moving most staffers out West.
Just days after Take-Two Interactive announced a companywide restructuring, the first changes to its organization are apparently already under way. Reps for the publisher have confirmed to GameSpot that the company is closing the New York City offices of its subsidiary 2K Games.
Though reps would not themselves elaborate, they did say the details in a report on Next Generation were accurate. According to the article, the move is part of a consolidation of 2K Games' formerly New York-based administrative and publicity resources with development talent on the other side of the US.
"They're just moving to the West Coast to provide more cohesiveness," the rep said, without naming a specific studio. Visual Concepts and Kush Games, the Take-Two-owned makers of 2K Sports titles, are located in California. However, two other major internal 2K shops--Massachusetts-based Irrational Games and Maryland-based Firaxis--are on the Eastern seaboard. (Irrational also has an Australian arm.)
Much like Nintendo's recent PR department relocation, not everyone from 2K Games' New York office is making the move. The rep reportedly confirmed that "some" of the Manhattan staff are being let go, while others chose to not make the move voluntarily.
2K Games is one of Take-Two's stable of subsidiary publishers along with 2K Sports, Rockstar Games, and Global Star Software. It was formed in 2005 following Take-Two's dissolution of the Gathering--its PC-focused subsidiary--and its acquisition of Visual Concepts and Kush. 2K Games titles include Civilization IV (PC) and the forthcoming BioShock (PC, 360) as well as The Darkness (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360). It also copublished the 360 and PC editions of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with Bethesda Softworks.
What ever will help them to free up money. They make the best sports games...KEEP IT UP 2K!!! (Show EA that gameplay, not looks, are more important.)
nooooo show the East Cost some love for god sakes! how come all of the best schools are on the East Coast yet all of the big companies choose to locate their HQs in Cali? LAME!
that's sucks. i hope those artists and desginers were able to get positions elsewhere in the company, instead of being left out on the street without a job!
NYC is the greatest city in the world. But for gaming companies it seems the west coast is where its at, I guess because its closer to Japan/China/Korea, where all their computer parts & programs are made. :P
Zomg. I know there's no mention of this, but maybe Take-Two wanted to move west so it could like... open a Japanese office or something. You know, like how NOA's HQ is on the west coast.
Umm. It' not like operating costs are small on the West Coast either. If they really want to save money, they should move to Wyoming, or whatever.
manhattan is the greatest place on earth. but it's hella expensive and not a thriving gaming center. this move is based on cost savings, primarily, but makes strategic sense, too. more of the gaming world is on the west coast. sucks to be forced out of paradise, tho.
"I Hate when the late show says that New York is the greatest city in the world, please.... U cant really make that claim unless u have visited every single city in the world. I been to New York and its not all that great, its always cold and i was bored 90% of the time when i was there. Leave cold ass New York and come to sunny Southern California and enjoy the beach, the mountains, the sun and the ladies." Yes, it's always cold, even in the summer. Idiot.
Every story has a rant in it. C'mon "New YORK SUCXZ I WAZ BO3RD AND STOFF" "WEETS COASET RULEUZ". You guys are really annoying.
Well closing studios is always sad, but the company needs to reconfigure this is the only way I guess.

Cant really blame them, the taxes in New York are bad. I'm guessing by doing this they're saving a ton in the high taxes of the welfare state.
It all comes down to this, when you adapt to a certain area you become attached to it. It really doesn't matter where the developer companies are, there just needs to be more on the east coast.
The 2K Publishing brand's administrative and publicity offices are moving, not all of Take2 nor the actual devepers of the games are going West...people gotta read the article. Rockstar still has offices based in NYC and given they are focusing on revisiting liberty city its pretty clear they love NYC & Irrational Games (MA) and Firaxis (MD) will still remain based on the East Coast, so that's all I care about.
hmm...... they could have just created another office to the west coast not move the entire 2k corporation there
That sucks! I was just getting ready to send them my demo reel!! Shoot, now I'll have to think about moving if I want to work for them.
throw ya hands up for the west coast, we grow the best ...... on the west coast! Anyone know what song thats from? message me if you have an answer

The West is where its at for both the USA, and Canada Major Cities getting more major California in General(I'm not American) But cities in Canada that are getting bigger......are Vancouver but mostly Calgary, and Edmonton.
I don't think this really means much of anything. Take Two still owns the rights to all these franchises so a different studio will just be making the new iteration of these games.
this is really hard to swallow, especially after the recent success, and they have a few highly anticipated games in the pipeline
