E3 06: Ace Combat confirmed for US takeoff

Spacious skies are about to become a bit more crowded, as Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception is set to hit American PSPs this fall.

When the original PlayStation launched in the US, Namco supported the system with three classic games: Ridge Racer, Tekken, and Air Combat (the first in what is now known as the Ace Combat series). Now that trinity of titles is confirmed to be reunited on Sony's handheld hardware, as Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception (working title) will join PSP launch title Ridge Racer and Tekken: Dark Resurrection when it releases later this year.

The game once again will feature real-world aircraft (like the F-14D and the Tornado F3) dominating the skies in a fictional universe. However, this is not the same fictional universe featured in the PlayStation 2 installments of Ace Combat. In Skies of Deception, players don the flight suit of a pilot attempting to liberate his country of Aurelia from the invaders of neighboring Leasath.

Freedom and liberty aren't the players' only reasons for putting up a fight, however. Success in campaign mode missions will be rewarded with parts that can be used to upgrade and tune the game's stock aircraft. Namco Bandai is also promising wireless ad hoc support for multiplayer dogfights, though it isn't known if upgraded aircraft will be usable in that mode.

Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception is scheduled to take off this fall. No price or ratings information has been announced yet.

"I have a PSP and initially loved it, but I find I don't play it anywhere near as much as I used to. In fact I'm finding I'm trading in a lot of the games I've bought because I just don't bother with the platform anymore. Kind of unfortunate really that really good games are coming out now, when the hardware itself has kind of lost a lot of momentum."

Man, I personally can't wait to play ACX. I usually can't find much time to sit down and play on my PS2, seeing as I have to be on the go a lot. This announcment (althought a bit old) is definitely good news for me.

But I will be purchasing AC0 next week, because I will try to find time for that!

After a pretty slow first year for the PSP, the second year has started out excellent. Syphon Filter, Daxter, Metal Gear Acid 2, now Ace Combat Skies of Deception. Even though the PSP hasn't sold as well as the DS, Sony has started to put a dent into Nintendo's grasp of the portable gaming.

Hopefully with this new Ace Combat game there will be connectivety with the new PS2 Ace Combat game.
