GDC 06: PS3 due "early" November, Warhawk playable at E3

Sony's keynote tweaks launch date, reveals attendees at May expo will be able to play the next-gen console.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Though no major bombshells were dropped at Sony's highly anticipated keynote address at the 2006 Game Developers Conference, several key pieces of information were revealed.

Foremost among the revelations was a further clarification of the release date of the PlayStation 3. About halfway through his presentation, Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison revealed that the next-generation console will launch worldwide in "early November." Previously, the console had a more general "November" launch window.

Secondly, it was confirmed that the PlayStation 3 will be playable at E3 this coming May. Though widely expected, the news was confirmed by Dylan Jobe of Sony Computer Entertainment's Incognito Studios. After presenting a high-definition, real-time demo of the forthcoming remake of Warhawk, the developer commented that the game would be playable at the event, meaning there will be PS3 kiosks on the show floor. Whether they will contain the finalized hardware unit or a SDK, as the Xbox 360 did at E3 2005, was not specified.

Sony also revealed at the presentation that God of War 2 will indeed return to the PlayStation 2, and that Ratchet & Clank is coming to the PS3. Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price also announced that the shooter I-8 has been renamed Resistance: The Fall of Man, and that it will be available by the end of the year--placing it square in the middle of the PS3's launch window.

    Am I right in thinking the Ps3 has a 7800GTX in it? and the Xbox 360 has a customised ATi X1900XT? So in terms of graphics the 360 beats PS3. CPU on the other hand goes to the PS3, but who needs all those cores? Maybe a couple will assist the Physics computations and a couple to boost the graphics a bit. Who knows, maybe if the game developers can make use of all these (IMO rediculous amount of) cores then PS3 might have the edge. So far its even Stevens, we will have to wait until it actually comes out.
    By the time the PS3 comes out with its DX9 7800, PC will have DX10 standard with actual 'next gen' capabilities.
    To sum what I have just said up:
    Its all hype, make do with what you have then when it comes out, then blow your freaking brains out.

    It's so sad that everyone is so bloody focused on wich machine is going to have the most power in it that you forget the most important thing. Wich is of course, the games. I for one will want to play both Oblivion, Too Human and Mass Effect. Three obvious reasons for me to get an X-Box 360. But I am also curious about Gears of War, Warhawk and whatever Square-Enix has planned for the PS 3. I don't really care if the machine I'm running my game on throws 3 or 4 gazillion polygons at me, 360 games are starting to look damn amazing, there's no denying that. Maby the PS 3 games will look even "amazinger" but that doesn't really degrade the 360 the least in my book. Nope, if I get the money I'll defenitely want to have them both because they'll both have games I just have to play. (And don't forget about the revolution. Zelda, Metroid... well, that's basically it but do they need more?)

    go sony u rule ps3 is gona be a killer for many reasons i cant wait till it cum out every at my skool are waing for the ps3 no one is talking about xbox all xbox fans at my skool are like xbox sux now becasue u r paying for **** technology thats al ready out and u play **** games on a **** system so y dont u wait till ps3 and play on a gud system and with gud technology and great games so suk **** ms this is wat u get for a wolrdwide launch and dont make enoguh consolse for the launch in your face go sony u rule for every and so dose ps3 woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh and go revolution u gona beat ms muha muha muha muha muha muha

    I wish I could go and play it at E3. But more and more Sony is getting there shape in older. To release in Nov with a pretty good launch line-up. With I-8 or now Resistance: The Fall of Man and Warhawk. Look like two great games.

    I agree with Yuk_foo unless you're willing to shell out a lot of money on ebay, look at getting a PS3 in "early November" '07. Honestly, there are still some places where you can't get a 360 this far after launch.

    PS3 will be more powerful than the 360, so anyone who is saying that they will buy a 360 just because Sony's machine is not out yet is being impatient!

    It should be worth the wait, because trust me, those who buy a 360 now because they want next Gen now and can't wait for PS3, they will be the ones who will feel sad when PS3 comes out because they will see how much better it is and realise they have spent all their cash on something that has already been bested...

    HEy, even if some games are not playable at E3, most of the launch titles will have trailers of the games i cant wait!!! can someone tell me where they gonna hold the E3 this time around and when, i just might if its in CALI :-)

    My Response: You know Sony always puts out some suprises for the public once they get the a ok from their workers who do the best to make everything perfect or at least presentable. E3...I never been....but for the people who are going.....Lucky Ya'll

    I dont think they will reveal the price tag until a few months before the launch, but I have a feeling it might be ranging from 400 to 500 dollars, only because if they sell higher, not everyone can afford it, but if they launch around that range, im sure the ps3's will be all gone in the first day in retail. I just hope they have enough to go around because look at microsoft, they been slow with production, so my hope is this doesnt happen to sony aswell, but since they did delay the launch until november, I think it was a smart move because now developers can have time to polish up the games and make them the way a real next gen game is suppose to look like and because now they have alot of time to make alot of ps3's for launch. Till then im waiting on e3 so we can see sum hands on gameplay from the ps3 and show sum of the fire power it got under its muscle.

    has any1 ever noticed that at almost every e3 when theres a new system sitting on a table showing off the games the systems a shell and theres $5000 dollars worth of computer hardware hidden by the tablecloth.

    I don´t care about Sony PS3 new drive, I don't care whether it's Blu-ray or HD-DVD, there's not going to be a lot of content in either format this year!!!!!
    So i still love X360!!!
