PS3 Final Fantasy VII Tech Demo more than a demo?

We check in with Square to see whether we can expect to see anything more come out of the popular PlayStation 3 tech demo.

CHIBA CITY, Japan--One of the highlights of the trailer compilation shown in one of the main theaters on the show floor of the Square Enix Party 2005 is the PlayStation 3 technology demo of the opening sequence of Final Fantasy VII. Ever since the short clip's debut in May during Sony's E3 press conference, there has been talk that the footage shown is evidence that Square Enix intends to release a remake of the FFVII. The talk started up again with renewed interest, as the clip took centerstage during a compilation of trailers shown of upcoming Square Enix games. We took the opportunity to talk to a Square Enix rep for the internal division within the company, whose focus is on the properties relating to Final Fantasy VII, to get the scoop.

FFVII Tech Demo

Square's PS3 technical demo at E3

Square Enix's initial response to our inquiry about whether the tech demo is suggestive of a full game in the works fell in the realm of a carefully worded corporate response. The reps noted that, as was mentioned at E3, the demo was created to show just how powerful the PlayStation 3 technology is. As a result, it's a tech demo only and is not intended to indicate that a PS3 remake of FFVII is presently under active development by the company.

However, when pressed, the reps also noted that further plans for content based on FFVII haven't been set, per se. They affirmed that the resulting reaction from fans over the demo footage and the content related to FFVII shown at the party has been overwhelmingly positive. As a result, provided fan reaction continues to be feverishly positive over the demo, and the very notion of a FFVII remake is certainly something Square Enix would bear in mind when planning future projects.

Does this mean it's on? Probably not at this exact moment, but at this point, we're willing to bet it's not a matter of if an FFVII remake will happen, but when.

    Please don't flame. I would get the PS3 just to play this game, since I haven't played it at all in the PS1. I would like to hope they make it exactly as the 1st one. I think I'll never play the 1st one until I play the PS3 version.

    Well, I've finished Crisis Core and I'm wanting to play FF VII now. Wish I hadn't found out that Aeris dies though, she's lovely. :*(

    Anyway, maybe this is why they haven't released the PS One version on the PSN.. If they remade VII for the PS3, I'd buy it in a heart beat.

    Hell, if they remade it for the PSP, I'd buy it on that too!

    I love how this was posted over 3 years ago and it is STILL getting hits and comments. That should tell Square-Enix and Sony something.

    For a Final Fantasy 7 remake, in addition to redone graphics, audio, and voice acting, I want something else: more sidequests and trophies. Yes, the game is excellent, and already features a ton of sidequests... but I want more! A remake alone is great, especially given the excellence of the game, but additional content would be icing on the cake for me. Trophies are a must as well. That's a game I wouldn't have any problem mastering completely (again), and a platinum trophy to show for it would be just grand.

    I find it surprising that they have not released final fantasy 7 into the Playstation Store unders PSOne Classics. I like to think that this means that they are planning on making a remake at some point in the future and dont want people to download the PSOne classic of it and loose their appetite for the remake.

    everything i've read agrees with the last statement of this article... everyone is saying that it's not in the works it's not in production NO ONE at Square has said "it's not happening" one excuse was that the original development team is busy... that doesn't constitute that the game isn't being planed, just that currently it's not being developed... My heart would drop and I would be the happiest man if FFVII made it's way to the PS3 but I would not be surprised either...

    Well at the end of Crisis Core credits they started the FF7 trailer (PS3 style)and added 5 seconds extra from the PS3 demo just for Cloud to say some words. So it could be a sign of saying that they are remaking the game but probably after XIII is done. Besides they don't need to do much, they got the story,characters, etc.. finished all they need to work on is the graphics and the music Let see the reactment of Aeris death on a PS3 that would make anyone cry.

    Why doesn't Square just listen to FF fans and do a next-gen FF7 . It would make fans of the series go mental and they'd rake in millions from it.

    I'd love to se a remake of FF7, even though i dont own a ps 3 I might think about buying one just for the FF7 remake.
    I also agree that the only thing they should do is to remake the graphics...

    I rly want to see it as a game on PS3 or even PSP/PS2 but I think the ONLY thing that should be done is to re-do graphics cuz If they touch on the battle system or even the side quests I think it will kill the game, don't you guys agree that FF I is WAY better than FF XII. That last one is more of an MMORPG than FF... Anyway just redo Graphics and I'm sure all people have FFVI will pay another 60$ to get that one too.

    Making the remake would end up being the best game of all time.It should be released for ps3 psp and ps2 if games are still made for it at the time of the release.

    With what everyone has been saying, I actually think it would be great Idea to remake this game. Just redo the graphics and sort out a few bad things in the previous game and hey presto, perfect game in every aspect.

    Of all games that NEED TO BE REMADE , this game is #1. I saw advent children, and if they can do that, why not remake the whole firsy game. I understand that Crisis Core needed to be made, but come one square enix! I wanna get right to the heart of the whole thing. Throw me a frickin bone here!

    If they made a remake of Final Fantasy VII, I'd be so happy, I'd burn down churches! I agree with the other guy a few comments ago though. They really should port FF7 to the PSP!!! I was so happy when I was able to play Symphony of the Night on the PSP. They really need to re-release FF7 again.

    If Square knows that this game would make the millions of fans literally begging for this game to be remade happy, as well as make them a TON of money, what is keeping them? I would be willing to wager that a remake of Final Fantasy VII would sell equal, if not MORE, than any game Square has coming out in the near future. A remake of FFVII would seriously swing Playstation's superiority over the other consoles. I just don't get why Square wouldn't take on an FFVII remake knowing what an impact such a venture would have.

    I don't like this "free form fighting" Final fantasy has always used a form of ATB system. A true remake should use this, failing that, they should just make sure they don't change too much when it comes to the story or locations that part of the game had always been sound in my eyes.

    I would soo like a re-make of FF7 but a good remake. just like Capcom did with Resident Evil 1 on the GC. It almost felt like a new game due to new locations etc.
    Damn, If FF7 were to be remade in that same way

    You know, it would be nice if there was a remake of ff7 on the ps3. I would love to play this game again, but with better graphics and maybe more stuff features, and maybe some voices here and there.

    Frickin' hell, I'd be happy with a re-printing as my original copy has vanished over the years, a re-make with modern graphics would be God. But as this tech demo was released like three years ago and there's been no talk of anything since it doesn't look like its going to happen. I just hope Crisis Core doesn't suck.

    The only things they need to change in the greatest game ever made would be the graphics and as well just update the battle system to keep it up to date with teh other games but besides that nothing else should be touched its the greatest game with the greatest story and thats all i can say.

    Just to clear this up this won't be released sadly.
    Even with the squall of FF7 spin off's over recent years the likely hood of this actually being released are pretty much zero.

    Even though this would sell in its millions there'd be alot of red tape to clear up (Oddly as this is a title released on a sony console).

    Still we can keep dreaming and hoping, if this comes out I'd instantly get a PS3 and just this game.
    But thinking about it it wouldn't be ready til around 2010 anyways with the added inclusion of voice acting remaking the WHOLE engine all the models it'd be like basically making an copy of a game but much bigger it gets complex.

    Still Krazyjp7 I know how you felt I almost teared as well when i saw this and I actually had a tingle down my spine.

    I got shivers from watching this....and it felt good!!!!

    This game was a masterpiece and best seller. Square soft would be insane to not make a re-make using better graphics from the PS3. Can't wait...if there is any game out there I would wait in line for, it's Final Fantasy 7.

    Damn, i seriously wish they do a re-make.....a lot of us, specially those of us who played it when it came out, have been expecting a re-make for the PS3...with those beautiful graphics the PS3 has, and the Story of my favorite game, Oh man i would be HAPPY!!!!....i wont give up hope! im goin to wait for a re-make even if they dont intend to do it, i dont care, i WILL WAIT!!!

    This article was back in 2005? I can guarantee you that since then, Square has developed at least 10-20% of the remake just to get an idea of how it would turn out. I think the only reason Square is hesistant is b/c it cost them $45 mil to make this back in 1996, so a remake isnt gonna be cheap. I doubt this will see the light of day in 2008, but 2009, theres a very good chance we'll hear somethin bout it... I hope they decide to remake it...

    That would be awesome... I remember playing FFVII for the PS and it was alot of fun... one of the best games Ive ever played... if they were to put it on PS3 I would definately buy it.
