Sony to ship more PSPs and PS2s

SCE increases estimated number of units shipped by a million each; new count to be reached before end of current fiscal year.

TOKYO--Sony's game division may be smarting from yesterday's earnings report, as Sony reported its first consecutive quarterly loss for the first time in four years, with the game division contributing significantly to those losses. But hidden in yesterday's statement of finances was news that will at least please retailers, some of whom have been adversely affected by hardware shortages in the past.

Sony has adjusted its shipment targets for both the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable, increasing the shipment tally of each by 1 million.

SCE said that before the end of its current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2006, the PS2 and PSP would each ship 13 million units.

Sony shipped 3.53 million PS2 units worldwide during the first quarter, which was 2.82 million units more than the same period of last year. Meanwhile, the PSP also fared well, shipping 2.09 million units.
