Rumors flew about last week when a product listing on EBgames.com listed Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter as the title for the upcoming chapter of the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series. While product pages can't be relied on for total accuracy for leaked information, they're often right about simple changes to titles.

Today, Ubisoft confirmed that the EBgames.com listing was indeed correct. This marks a departure from the numerically sequential path on which the series' titles were seemingly headed. The original Ghost Recon and its spin-offs were followed by Ghost Recon 2, but Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is noticeably number-three-free.

Ubisoft's naming gives gamers a good look at what this edition will be about. The "warfighter" is the game's next-generation field soldier. Armed with near-future military technology, gamers will take the role of an elite supersoldier. At the crux of the warfighter is the Integrated Warfighter System, which combines advanced weapons technology, satellite communications, and new squad interactivity.

The game is set in the year 2013 in Mexico City, which has been overthrown by an insurgence of rebels. The famed Ghosts must head into the capital to squash a rebellion and retake control of the metropolis. Gamers will lead their squad on missions to "save the president of the United States, recover stolen nuclear codes, and eliminate a vicious band of renegade soldiers hell-bent on unleashing catastrophe."

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is scheduled to ship this holiday season for the Xbox 360, Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, and PC. Each current-generation version will be custom-tailored for its system. For more information on the game, deploy to GameSpot's previous coverage.
