Battlefield 2 ships
EA and DICE's modern military shooter begins its continent-wide assault on PCs.
With their appetites already whetted by the recent release of the Battlefield 2 demo, PC gamers can now tuck into the real thing. Electronic Arts announced today that it has shipped the much-anticipated follow-up to developer Digital Illusions' Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam to stores across the US and Canada. It is rated T for Teen and retails for a suggested $49.99.
Unlike its two predecessors, which were set in historical wars, Battlefield 2 takes place in a hypothetical future conflict between the United States, China, and the fictional Middle Eastern Coalition (MEC). Each side will be equipped with the latest military hardware, including more than 30 vehicles and state-of-the art weaponry, like jets, helicopters, and mechanized infantry.
Players can use the game's new arsenal in an all-new single-player mode or the expanded multiplayer mode, which lets 16, 32, or 64 virtual combatants shoot it out online. Based on an all-new graphics engine, Battlefield 2 also sports an array of new technical improvements, including improved artificial intelligence. The multiplayer games also let players engage in real-time strategy via the new commander mode, or they can engage in standard tactical first-person-shooter action as part of a squad.
GameSpot's Jason Ocampo has high praise for Battlefield 2, so be sure to read his full review for a complete briefing on the game.
