Two more Resident Evil movies planned

German production company planning fourth film before third even begins production; Milla Jovovich to reprise role.
By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot
Posted Jun 13, 2005 5:54 pm PT

When the eponymous first film based on Capcom's Resident Evil games hit theaters in 2002, it was a moderate success. Though largely panned by critics, the medium-budget sci-fi horror thriller did well at the box office, earning under $40 million. Its sequel, 2004's Resident Evil: Apocalypse, did even better, pulling in just over $50 million.

Hoping to wring more money from the franchise---the second-highest-earning game-based film series, after Tomb Raider--the production company behind the Resident Evil films has plans for two more. Today's Hollywood Reporter reports that Germany-based Constantin Film AG is already laying the groundwork for a fourth Resident Evil movie. Little is known about the film other than it will take place in Tokyo and it will be shot on location in Japan.

The move is surprising, given that shooting hasn't begun on the third chapter in the series, currently titled Resident Evil: Afterlife. Indeed, according to the reporter, Afterlife is in the midst of a shake-up, with the recent announcement that production is moving to Australia.

No director has signed onto Afterlife, which is based on a script written by British director Paul W. S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat, Alien vs. Predator), who directed the first Resident Evil. Though she hasn't signed a contract yet, Anderson's wife, supermodel-actress Milla Jovovich, is reportedly set to reprise her role as Alice, the series' gun-toting heroine.

In the first Resident Evil, Alice fought her way out of the zombie-infested labs of the Umbrella Corporation, only to have to cope with a ghoul-overrun metropolis in Apocalypse. Afterlife will follow her into the Southwestern American desert (played by the Aussie outback), where Alice will blast still more chemically animated undead before fleeing the continent. It is tentatively set for a release sometime in 2006.

The latest chapter in the Resident Evil game series, Resident Evil 4, is one of the highest-rated titles currently available for the GameCube. A PlayStation 2 version is due out later in the year.

I'm not going to see anymore. It's targeted at a general audience, and there is no need to add references with people not knowing what the hell is going on.
Turns out i don't know what's going on...alice?? hmmmmm

NO MORE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok, the first movie was... not that bad, but the second one was terrible, was a nightmare in a bad sense, the killing and perfect machine Alice is was out of the question, that character is terrible and destroys the resident evil universe, there is no Leon, no Chris, no Claire, is a movie suggested in the videogame, somebody should stop this nonsense of movies and take the rights from Paul Anderson and give them to some else, silent hill is the perfect example of how a movie based on a video game is made. so i will not go to see this third film of the fourth they are planning, i will not throw my money to the can and torture **** that awful movie.

It's good that they didn'r remake the game in the movie. When I go to see the movies, I don't want to know what is going to happen next. They are being original. The "nostalgia" factor is when that one enemy or reference to a game is seen, and its like " ya... I remember that". You can't wait to see how they will use some of the elements of the games in new ways!

I'm not impressed with the "boss" crock they gave us in the first movie. I already know one thing. We aren't getting our Tyrants, our hunters, or our Chimeras. By the way, did anyone notice that the movie was alot more like Resident Evil 2 with the train and the Licker if anything? Whatever..I'm going to see Extinction and RE4 I don't care, I love Resident Evil, and me and my best friend saw both the day they came out together, no lie.

But isn't it the gamers that go to see the movie because it bears the title of their favorite game?

Perhaps it wouldn't be much of a surprise if they were to base the entire storyline off of the game, but that doesn't mean they couldn't have made it like the first and second game. In their own way, the movies were good yes, but for being the Resident Evil spawn of the game it didn't sit very well. They associated the basic principals of the game but did take it to a theatrical level when turning it into a film.

Just think abou it though...wouldn't you have wanted to watch as the STARS team crash lands searching for the fallen crew members in the mountains, deep in the creepy forest. Wouldn't you have liked to see what they would do when they were walking around the mansion suddenly turn a cornor and there a hord of Zombies?

Wouldn't it have been just a little bit awesome to say "hey I remember that from the game!" as they enter the underground facility to face the first of many tyrants? Before you start to critisize someone for judgeing something think about it from their angle; maybe it's because there are some of us out there that are die hard Resident Evil fans and would have liked to see Chris plunge a dagger into the side of a Zombies head. Or have them actually fight off the Hunters like in the game?

It's a dissapointment in some ways and in its own way a good movie. All I'm saying is that you have to consider that maybe if they had played it along the original story line with a few tweeks maybe it would have been better than the "super endused chick" who can kick butt simply because they infected her and lived.

Interesting....I liked the first resident evil tons...I rememeber when I seen the first trailer for the second and how blown away the trailer looked for it and how much I wanted to see it. Sadly through I didn't see it in the movie theatures like I did the first one...so when I seen the second movie I was kinda disappointed with how they did the special effects and the plot. But I wouldn't go as far and say the movie sucked because it didn't I've seen some crappy movies in my day and that wasn't too bad. I think the biggest problems with people is that they jump to conclusions about a movie before they even see it so they prepare themselves to already expect the movie to be not worth watching. Just do yourself a favor...if you expect to critize something before even seeing the movie or basing it off of some stupid previous experence...just don't say anything...clear your mind and go see it in the movie theatures without basing it onto something else...you might find that you like it... I really hope they have more characters from the RE series in here

And I hate the fact that the main character isn't even FROM any RE game.

not all video game to movie have to be actually as the game is because if you go see a movie that is same as the game why see it if you know whats going to happen now if they change the story is better because we can be surprised just because its says resident evil doest mean we have to see chris and jill survive the mansion or leon and claire escape raccoon city or jill escapre before it is blown to bits

The Reason the Silent Hill Movie looks more "game-oriented" is because Konami is accually involved with the production of the movie instead of Capcom where they really have nothing to do with it.

I still don't understand how anyone could have liked those movies... as... well... practically always, video game-to-movie translations go horribly wrong (there's no need to point out the ghastly Double Dragon, Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, etc., is there?) and Resident Evil is no exception... the first two movies sucked big time, I didn't have the patience nor the disposition to watch them to the end, knowing they'll just end the way they would... and, in fact, did... with no surprises, no connection to the game, whatsoever, aside from a few corporate references and thanks to the Capcom staff. To anyone who played Killer7, more than any of the Resident Evil titles, it's clear that the Capcom staff is way more able to direct a movie than actual movie companies and directors... so, yes, I'm sad and a little bit frightened of what those guys might do to the best Survival-horror gaming franchise of all times. Why, oh, God, why, do they have to do things like these? And, as if Resident Evil wasn't already enough for them to ruin, they had to go and make a film out of Silent Hill, too... fortunately, Silent Hill's trailer gives the idea the movie seems more related to the video game than the Resident Evil movies, so, let's have a little hope, there... (yeah, right...)
