PSP invades Europe September 1

Sony's portable goes on sale in its third region almost half a year later than originally planned; unit tagged with 249 Euro or 179 pound price.

Following the launch of the PlayStation Portable in Japan (December 11) and the US (March 24), Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony is gearing up for the handheld's next continental release. This week, Sony announced that the PSP will go on sale in Europe on September 1. Sony had hoped the slick gadget would launch in the region soon after its American debut, and British merchants had listed the device as launching in midsummer.

The PSP will sell for 249 Euros ($323), or 179 pounds ($341) in the UK. It will come packaged in the PSP "Value Pack," which includes a neoprene case, a wrist strap, a 32MB Memory Stick Duo, and other PSP necessities. The same package sells for $249 in the US.

Sony pushed back the release of the PSP in Europe to ensure that there would be enough consoles for the US launch. The near half-year delay gives two rival companies a hearty head start on Sony--Nintendo's DS and Tiger Telematics' Gizmondo both made their debuts in the UK in March, and the Gizmondo will hit the rest of Europe in May.
