In the novel Dune Messiah, protagonist and Emperor of the Known Universe Paul Atreides estimates that 60 billion souls have perished as a result of his interstellar jihad.
This week, developer Bungie announced that players of its game sci-fi epic, Halo 3, had reached a genocidal milestone of their own. As of Monday, some 10 billion members of the Covenant had been killed in the course of single-player campaigns since the critically hailed quintuple platinum shooter launched in September 2007.
"For those in the same camp we count ourselves in, folks baffled by talk of billions, let's take a look at the tally from a more down-to-Earth perspective," mused the Bungie.net community manager known as "Urk." "Crude math places the estimate of daily Halo 3 Covenant kills, launch-to-date, at over 17,500,000. That's 730,000 killed per hour or 12,000 Covenant troops killed per minute." No mention is made of the Flood, the parasitic mutant race that players also face in Halo 3.
The Bungie rep then said that an average of 650 Covenant had been killed for each Halo 3 player--meaning that there are nearly 15,385,000 people who have scored a kill in the game's single-player campaign. The figure accounts for multiple players per copy of the game, which had sold 8.1 million units worldwide as of January 2008.
The Covenant were totally asking for it. I'm personally not a big halo fan, but i have to say...Grunts are adorable. I wish i could have a real grunt as a pet. I would name him "Dr. Tickles" and give him a plasma pistol and watch him play with the neighborhood kids.
Oh yeah! And another thing. The covenant are alot stronger in the books too! Eg: A brute went 1 on 1 against Master Chief (aka John, Spartan 117) and almost won (that was a real part in the third book, if i remember properly). And a high ranked elite went 1 on 1 against Master Chief too, and the same thing happened, Master Chief walked away but wounded. In the game, you can take out heaps of covenant without any tactics, just charge in and shoot, but in the books, the Spartans have to use their brains to win (and they usually do).
"No wonder why the Covenant always lose!" Actually mate, in the books, the Covenant are winning, pretty badly too. The humans have few victories, and most of them are because of the Spartans. In the games, the covenants plasma weapons are pretty weak and ineffective, and the human weapons are generally more reliable, but in the books its a whole other story. Eg: One graze across your arm from a plasma pistol will melt half of it off.
Wolfie600 "the ones posting comments like "and i care why?' are just trying to look cool." and you trying to defend that fact that this isn't real news makes you look like a fanboy. I still say that more pedestrians have been killed in GTA 4 by getting run over.
vdiv2003, I know, but I'm saying if these games did have similar events, they wouldn't be in the news.
ShroudedEagle, Gears isn't "in the news saying "10 billion Locust killed" or Call of Duty World at War saying "10 billion Nazi Zombies killed"" because that many havn't been killed. See how simple that one was.
Airshocker, it seems you don't understand the Assault rifle at all. I'm guessing you let the bullets fly out and not do burst shot. Like any machine gun, it's more accurate to do burst shots then a full on trigger squeeze. And besides, Assault rifle is intended for close range, hell..I can kill shotgunners with an AR. Bascically all you do is run the guy, and shooting him and melee him when he gets close, if your fast enough you can get him and stay alive and not double K.O each other
Hey, i think its pretty cool. lay off bungie, theyre basically the ones who revolutionized the First person shooter-thing for the xbox360 Idont care ehat they say, good job guys
the campaign is the best thing in halo 3, in my opinion, unlike the mp. Besides, its more known than gears or cod
Becayse Epic or Treyarch dont care that much for their community unlike Bungie who listen to their fans and actually make updates and release map packs that are actually fun to play. Tbh ive never downloaded a gears of war map because apparently its not available on my region ( i live in the US) And infinity war are not trying to make new map packs because of MW 2 but i still loved COD 4
Not really any point in putting it in the news. You don't see Gears of War 2 in the news saying "10 billion Locust killed" or Call of Duty World at War saying "10 billion Nazi Zombies killed", so why Halo 3? The campaign isn't even anything special for a start.
and this doesnt even count those people who have played the game but are not connected to XBOX Live. so we could probs add another billion or so....
@Wolfie600 Halo 3 doesn't have the most accurate aiming system around. With a BR it doesn't take a whole clip, but a lot of people aren't fantastic with the BR and just go for the assault rifle which is pretty damn weak unless you're constantly hitting the guy in the face.
People that say they need a full clip to kill someone on halo must suck alot.. and tbh this is actually cool and the ones posting comments like "and i care why?' are just trying to look cool. Gratz all the halo 3 players that killed a covenant on the journey to Halo. Now i am wondering how many covenant have been killed since the first Halo D:
so what the hell... do we get something for this? why is this so great? i bet you 1/3 of the people did most of the work lol.
REA24409 "What's so great about Halo. Halo2 was the best out of all of them but I don't think the Halo series is that great. I played it and it's just annoying, it takes a whole magazine to kill one person. If you like games where you can jump really high into the air and stay alive for a long time shooting mindlessly than this is the game for you. If not then I would not get it. >__>" O.O It takes you a whole clip for you to kill a another guy? It takes me less than a half of a clip usually. I don't want to offend, but you must be pretty bad. Don't judge a game on how long it takes to kill an enemy cause that time can easily be cut down. Anyway, that's the point of having 2 weapons xP I don't insult games like Killzone , or GoW because I don't have much skill at them.
How many of them are there!?!You'd think by now we'd have at least put a significant dent in their numbers (not to mention morale), but they just keep coming like lemmings over a cliff.
Wej_accept_it "Gearsofallot, don't compare Halo and KillZone 2! Ones an epic sc-fi ACTION/ADVENTURE shooter. The other is an intense, action packed sc-fi WAR shooter. And the Helgast are way tougher to kill then Covenant. KZ2 does less overall then Halo (eg smaller battles) but it does everything better (eg more itnense battles!!)" compares games after yelling at a guy not to compare games. lol :)
