$10 'Rockstar Pass' coming to L.A. Noire May 17

@NYJets12 it's not only MS and Sony offering paid DLC it's the publishers of the games, the same publishers who charge for DLC on PC as well as consoles (see CoD map packs etc). It is extra content and you expect it to be free? i don't think you understand the effort and time that is put into making games and subsequently extra content, it should not be free and if anything it was the PC that started the ball rolling with expansion packs which were essentially hard copies of the DLC we have today. it's not greed, it's people trying to make a living in this world of pre owned and piracy.

PC gaming had all DLC free plus you get free mods & maps thanks to the talented community,consoles are greedy.it's gonna screw the consoles sooner or later unless the people are dumb enough to fall for this, seems like they are. If consoles [this means you sony & ms] gave free DLC you wouldn't need these pases. GREED!!

I'll forgive Rockstar because their games are all brilliant, but this is going to kill the trade-in market - and as a result quite a few companies too I'd imagine. Looks like I'll have to just go easier on the games I buy.

This doesn't affect me because I only buy new games.

Ouch. I really wanted this game. But I won't be responsible for encouraging this. Can't buy it anymore.

@xpepox That's not at all what i am saying. But as long as you bring it up, that's what is happening with the EA online pass. You pay 59.99 for a new game with an online pass worth 10 bucks. Or 49.99 for a used game... and have to buy an online pass for 10 bucks. So.. EA is trying to recoup the "used sales" cost in some way and we end up paying the same amount as if we'd bought it new. It is trying to take away consumer choice. That's why i don't like it.

@PixelAddict if they charged you the same fee for new games then people would buy used and that would defeat the whole purpose. so obviously that is not what is going to happen.

If you find it offensive to pay people for what they create, don't buy it. Vote with your dollar, but stealing doesn't make you any better than those you feel are "out to rip you off". Break the cycle, it's the only way out. Pirating doesn't "teach" anyone a lesson. It just makes you a criminal. Gaming is a HOBBY. It is not a "lifestyle", it is not an imperative for living. You don't need video games. Anyone who says they do is an addictive personality who should seek help.

i see this theme will close down alot of game stores in the future. plus people who sell there games on a market are gonna be out of buisness in no time

disgusting. developers will be able to get 70 on average for every game they sell if people keep buying it pre owned. plus it decreases the value of everyones games as people would have to pay more to use them. -5 respect rockstar

If this wasn't solid proof that much of the stuff released as DLC is purposefully held back, then I don't know what is.It couldn't get more obvious.

Keep ripping customers off, the piracy will slowly take you guys down, your greediness already earned you a bad name on the PC platform by not releasing titles for PC.

What happened to the good old days when games came with all the content for free? I refuse to buy DLC, I havent yet and im not gonna. Now in the case of GTA 4 and the 2 episodes I can see as kind of acceptable, although if you waited a little bit longer you could buy all 3 gta 4 games for allot less. I hate DLC.

If this rockstar pass is anything other than the code for free DLC that you have access to with a new game Im going to be kinda pissed. The right model is Mass Effect 2. Free code in all new games, free DLC as the bonus

Man they should word "online pass" differently. If this means episodic, like what was done with Alan Wake, then I'm interested. But calling it "online pass" just makes it sound like what EA is wanting to do with all their sport games (or maybe all of their games).

my initial impression is that this would be a way for them to do episodic releases, something like a new case to download every month. the interview with team bondi's lead guy mentioned 2 separate crime divisions that didn't end up in the retail version of the game, this might be a good way to distribute those instead of in one big lump download.

First EA, then Sony, now Rockstar? I don't like where this "online pass" thing is going. Sure it's on used games (and the advertising BS says "included for FREE on new games!"), but how long until new games are 59.99 and then you STILL have to buy an online pass? That's what's coming. I don't like it.

How is this forcing used gamers to buy their extra pass? It sounds like the Rockstar pass will essentially provide access to DLC. Plenty of gamers simply don't buy the DLC all the time. They better at least provide a free code for this pass for those who buy it new.

@fightingfish18 Agreed, but it won't stop unless everyone agrees not to buy that crap. And as of right now, I don't see that happening. @seancoombes Alan Wake did it. I bought my copy of it used and it still had an unredeemed DLC code. And I think the people that intend to sell it back just won't redeem the DLC either. You obviously won't have to activate it or you couldn't play it on a disconnected console, defeating the purpose of a single player game.

It's weird to see this in a game with no multiplayer aspect - if it just restricts access to DLC then I doubt anyone buying the game used will bother to pay for the pass.

i bet the $10 means we get extra cases to Noire. Or new tools for investigation or new clothes, new weapons.. and whatever you might think 'new' in the game. no one wants to pay for the content they already have. we pay for extra content only, ROCKSTAR.

I always buy new 90% of the time but this takes the mick, I thought rockstar would be the last to do this. If it wasn't for preowned games, games retailers would not be here now, the profit margin from preowned games is much higher than new games. If it wasn't for people buying preowned games, high street stores would no longer exist and you will all be buying your games digitally.

@fightingfish18, Yes! Thats exactly it. Which is why i no longer purchase popular franchises such as CoD, why bother getting all the map packs etc, when a new sequel waits just around the corner.

@thenephariouson I wouldn't mind payign for extra content every month IF it was good content, and if the publishers would support games for more than one year. If monthly content was added, which made the game deeper and more to get from it, it'd be pretty cool to get constant new stuff. It'd simply mean investing more money in fewer games. However, this wouldn't work currently cause all they do is push out crappy over priced DLC then release a sequel a year later.

People complain about online passes and other nonsense and they buy the game and the pass anyway. The company is milking you for more money and people are just so willing to comply. Why wouldn't every company do this?

I don't have a problem with the game just with this constant "If you want access to this, then download, if you want that, then download AGAIN?" nonsense, in order to access content that I have already paid for? Rockstar just want everybody that plays it to pay them which means, if all manufacturers do this then it will mean the end of Second hand sales or even borrowing it from a friend!? Even if you rent it, you will still need to pay this online fee to access all the content? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of renting then? I understand that many think there is no problem with this? This is what 'They' want, to confuse people by thinking they are getting more than they actually are...?

If I know Rockstar, they won't go as far as locking something as important as online, they care for their fanbase a lot. I bet like the article says perhaps the pre-order DLCs or discounts to future DLC?

@gamingfrendly, As outlandish as that sounds, given the way the gaming industry is going it would'nt suprise at all to find Subscription based games in the future, the day this happens is the day i give up gaming. I only hope and pray that never happens.

Wait, so I'll be able to enjoy the game regardless of whether I buy this "Rockstar Pass" or not?! The game is still going to be awesome. Whether you choose to participate in microtransaction business practices or not, do you think it's really going to change the core product? And why is everyone acting shocked? First off, we don't even know what it is. By the fact that it is a designer named purchase, and not a game named purchase, I think it might be something that offers cheaper add-ons/map-packs/extra items. The name sounds more of a "servic." Regardless, until I know more about it, and if it's actually "worth" it - I don't foresee myself getting it. I don't usually buy DLC, unless they're full-fledged add-ons like General Knoxx, Burning Crusade, Undead Nightmare, or extra "Shows" for You Don't Know Jack. And you'll never see me pay for an FPS "Map Pack." Valve taught me better than that... or gold colored shotguns.

Meh, if you don't like it don't buy it. I'm sure the game is still fantastic without this $10 pass for an extra hat or gun. Is it going to ruin the experience knowing absolutely nothing in the core gameplay has changed but someone else has paid $10 more for a wearable fez or some other obnoxious add on that really isn't needed? Probably not. But thats just me.

This is the kind of thing that MS should subsidise for XBL gold members imo. With the profits that MS are constantly boasting about, you'd think they would give something back to their consumer base, which would not only show a display of gratitude, but would also give them an edge over 'other' services that would have to charge for this type of additional content. In short, very dissapointed. Whats happening to the gaming industry?? this does not bode well for the future, and imo will ultimately have a negative effect on these money grabbing corporates. So it really wouldnt suprise me to see future 'News' articles indicating massive losses for a variety of Developer houses. Greedy *******s!
