Then get NSMBU if you own a Wii U. If not, then get the DS one.

No surprise the fanboy would suggest this.

NSMB1 possesses all NSMB2 has but with extra content such as Minigames and Battle Mode. GET IT

Out of the two handheld games, New Super Mario Bros. (the first one). NSMB2 has sharper visuals, that's it. Coin Rush is much more repetitive than the plentiful fun minigames the first game includes. Also, I personally think NSMB has better levels. NSMB2's are filled with either recycled or random elements (like those green moving blocks that appear randomly all over the game and often have almost or completely no purpose), which to me made it feel like the level design was just random. The coin gimmick is really nothing special: you just collect coins the exact same way as you do in every other Mario game for exactly the same purpose, there are just more of them and there is a continuous counter.
Of course, you might end up disagreeing on the level design, but the minigames are a better deal than Coin Rush. Also, the DS game is probably much cheaper than NSMB2. So there's hardly any reason to pick the second one over the first.

The original. You are not missing anything in NSMB2, get the classic one for DS.

The one for DS lacks Roy Koopa's manliness and manly hormones... but it's better besides that.

NSMB 2 is my favourite of the NSMB games, although I do like them all. I much preferred the level design and amount of secrets within each level compared to NSMB U. NSMB 2 also has pretty much all of my favourite power ups (gold flower, gold block, ice, mega mushroom, etc.)

If you didn't play NSMB, NSMB2 will provide more fun due to it's superior level design and physics that are better.
As a game, though, NSMB is better, for it is way more original.

This doesn't answer the question and nsmbwii is the most bland of the four new super mario games.

More originallity doesn't make a game as good or better than another.Nsmb2 may dissapointed people who wanted more new content, but if somebody has played neither game, then nsmb2 is the game to recommend because it is easily a better game overall.

They both have the same tight gameplay, which nsmbwii lacks, but nsmb2 is a more interesting and varied game than nsmbds(which is far too simple and watered down from snb3 and smw)

WTH ??? Better level design and gameplay makes nsmb2 the better game, originality can affect the enjoyment of a game, but that's only relevant to the people who played the first game before the second. If someone played nsmb2 before nsmbds, then their disappointment in nsmbds would be way beyond people's disappointment in nsmb2
